Once Upon A Mattress, the 1986 spring musical, held March 6, 7, and 8. transformed the stage into a magical make-believe kingdom. With the opening curtain, the Minstrel, played by newcomer David Pimentel, introduced the tale. As the chorus joined in. the three long months of hard work finally paid off as the enchantment of the stage and characters came alive. For old-timer Kirsten Swartz, looking out to the crowd and seeing alumni seated in the first row, added a warm feeling to her heart. The people in the first row were the ones who taught me everything—they helped me grow,” said Swartz. Swartz, the entertaining Jester, amused the audience with her humor throughout the musical. Senior Kaaren LoGiudice. who played Queen Aggravain. Dauntless' domineering mother, added her talented touch to one of her favorite characters ever portrayed. Aggravain was a strong character and she had a lot of room for improvisations,” responded LoGiudice. Aggravain’s husband, the mute King Sextimus, was portrayed by senior Richard Schleppy. Schleppy has been a drama member for three years and looks to an acting future. Among the many actors and actresses in Mattress, Troy Thrash returned from his role as Winnie-The-Pooh s Chris- topher Robin to play the unmarried Prince Dauntless. Thrash had the honor of working closely with Danette Hummel, who portrayed the lively, but shy Princess Win-nifred of the Swamp. Hummel has been a devoted leading lady on the N.H.S. stage for the past three years. She has had major roles in. The Wizard of Oz, Sweeney Todd. Oliver, Winnie-The-Pooh, and Mattress. Dressed alike in their pink medieval costumes, the three ladies-in-waiting amused the crowd with their flirtatious giggles. Beth Raab, Sara Stromwell, and I were considered the dingys of the Mattress cast, but memories of our laughing moments and the fun we had will never be forgotten,” said senior Lisa Gilliard. Additionally, juniors Kathleen Milkowich and Tina Beltz, along with sophomore Kurt DeBellis, had strong performances playing the parts of the mystical wizard, Lady Larken, and Sir Harry, respectively. A special highlight of the show was the return of alumnus, David Roberts, who played the part of the singing Nightengale. Roberts kept the crowd chuckling continuously throughout the scene.
