Math Department Math class is a welcome reprieve from the chaotic world in which students live Parallel lines are equidistant seven times nine equals sixty three and right angles contain ninety degrees are facts which do not change from day to day or year to year Idealism predomlnates in mathe matics and the Math Department can verify that Mr Schneider Mr Lerch Mrs Obrecht and Mr Kanter Driver Education Department To many students learning how to drive a car is more Important than receiving an A In a mayor subyect Although many other students will dis agree with this statement, the impact of learning how to drive a car cannot be diminished, To this end, the driver education teachers at Northampton attempt to teach each student how to safely drive a car. Plato would have approved of this concept Aside from the philosophical note, solving a prob lem correctly gives a student a great sense of satisfaction Both this idealistic nature of math and this sense of satisfaction make mathematics an exciting and challenging subyect Guidance Department Helping each student make mayor course deci sions and deciding on what college or occupation to enter is the yob of the Guidance Department Group and individual tests and counseling are the mayor tools used by the guidance personnel However, the guidance counselors are quick to say that all teachers are counselors in some sense and that no student should be afraid to discuss his problems with any teacher The students of NHS are very lucky to have such help in these very influential and important years of their lives Mr Fuyita and Mr Bartholomew 13 l' ' iiti ' lst , fl- l,l l ,l Mr Saul, Mr. Newton lChairmanJ, and Mr. Schmauch A Mr. Newhart, Mr. Diefenderfer, and Mr. Lilly y . . . Miss Hilberg and Mr. Kleppinger CChairmanJ English Department To be, or not to be: that is the question. is a quotation no senior will forget because of the enormous amount of emphasis our English De- partment puts on great literature and its comments on life. Through the study ot such statements, students are given an opportunity to broaden their educational horizons by becoming familiar with such great writers as Hemingway, Faulkner, Keats, and Shakespeare. These literary giants en- able a student to compare his own views to those views of literary men who have been held in high esteem for many years. Such exposure helps to better prepare a student to face the world in which he lives. Mrs. McCann, Mr. Dalton, and Mrs. Santee Art Department Man's creative endeavors are allowed to receive their full development in art class. Such develop- ment takes the form of sculpturing, charcoal, oils, water colors, and wood carvings. lt is hoped that students who have ability in art will consider their art class as a starting point for the development of their already pronounced talent. For those who are not quite as fortunate, art class gives them a chance to express their feelings in both an aes- thetically pleasing and socially acceptable manner. Thus, each student is given the sense of accomp- lishment that is so important to his development as an individual. Mr. Wall CChairmanD, Miss Wesley, and Mr. Szabo ' .. Physical Education Department The parts of the eye and the muscles ofthe body combine with gym equipment and basketballs to complete the Physical Education Department. This department is also responsible for the coaching staffs of the various sports at Northampton. From a gym class to a health class to the varsity sports, the Physical Education Department is in the lime- light combining their talents and the students for a well-rounded education. Music Mr. Becker Like gym or driving, music is another welcome addition to the curriculum at Northamp- ton. In music class, students are allowed to express their emotional feelings in an appro- priate manner. The lack of pressure for a better grade helps to expand the feeling of excitement many s t u d e n t s have for music class. Lastly music, like some literature, also raises man above the problems of life and gives him a chance to live in a type of dream world for forty minutes. Vocational Department Our school, in an attempt to help students adjust to adulthood, offers several courses in vocational subiects. Through the school's wood and printing shop, as well as the privilege of using the facilities of the Bethlehem School Dis- trict, students who do not plan to continue their formal education can take course offerings that prepare them for a profitable occupation. Mr. Reiff and Mr. Erdosy lChairmani 14 Mr. Oplinger, Miss Kremus, Miss Yelenics, Mr. Altrichter, Mr. Erdosy Library Reference books, magazines, atlases, and fiction are a part of what the- library contains. Research papers, book reports, and escapes from study halls are the reasons to use the li- brary. However, books and assignments are only part of the contributions Mrs. Cann and the library aides make to the school for they also furnish a functional place to work and read. M .C Medical Department rs ann Bandages, pills, and thermometers are the fa- miliar items of the health room. Student health must precede classroom learning, and therefore students are permitted to use the available medi- cal facilities. Many thanks are extended to the efforts of the Health Department in keeping the student body healthy. Dr. Boucher and Miss Stettler if 2 llti i - X.
