A CHALLENGE This year's class steps onto a world stage where, for the first time, man has the ability to feed the hungry millions yet commit suicide with a bomb. It is a stage abounding in blessing and evil, a stage seething with racial unrest, economic upheaval, and international conflict. It is my hope that you will have the courage to accept the challenge of being actors rather than reactors on such a stage. Unfortunately, your task will be complicated by the demand to be an expert in any endeavor you undertake. Whether it be as a contractor, housewife, chemist, or mechanic, you must be quali- fied to take your place in a computer-iet age, an age where the ever increasing amount of knowledge and the speed at which life is lived will call from you the best that you have. Not only must you commit yourself to the exacting demands of the present, but also to the high ideals and dreams that have made America what she is today and what she will be in the fu- ture. Many of you in the next few years may give your life for these commitments. Be assured that such acts will not be in vain. If Northampton has taught you anything, l hope it is the ability to unceasingly commit yourself to that which seems right and best in this one nation under God. Do not be turned aside by the worthless treasure of security. Instead, stand tall and step bravely onto a world stage that anxiously awaits your knowledge, under- standing, and commitment. Sincerely yours, Russel C. Becker President of the School Board
