into the future. HARRY W. SHIMER S. CLYDE FRANKENFIELD IRA L. SHEAFFER 1906-1913 1913-1922 1922-1946 PRINCIPALS The men who served as principals of our high school during the past were no less diligent or competent than those who served in the superin- tendency. Minutes of the School Board tell us that the first principal of the high school, from '1902 to 1905, was E. J. Bernhardt. Then Mr. Landis served first as principal, a year later as supervis- ing principal. Succeeding him was Harry W. Shimer, who left in 1913 to accept the supervisor- ship of the Woodstown, New Jersey schools. Mr. NORMAN A. LAUB, B.S., M.A. Principal For the past nineteen years, Mr. Laub has been guiding hand behind all school proiects and activities - the school itself. His is truly an enviable record, a ord marked by patient, unceasing effort to make school a better place and by his aspirations to better prepare students for the responsibilities of ci tizens Frankenfield then assumed the principalship and was subsequently named superintendent in 1922. Ira L. Sheaffer, who had been assistant principal since 1913, who ardently promoted the school athletics program - and science - and everything for the betterment of his charges, then served as principal until his retirement in 1946. The zeal, devotion, leadership, and interest these men possessed is still apparent today. the rec- this hip, a record whose success has earned him the right to be proud, if he were a proud man. To him, our friend leader, we owe a debt of thanks, it was he who cared enough to see that everything was as it should have been, it was he who was always there to solve problems with which we could not cope. page ll and the

EICHLER 1908-1922 1922-1930 1930-1961 SUPERINTENDENTS Through all the years from the beginning, Northampton has been most fortunate in having capable and dedicated leaders. Our first superintendent was William D. Landis, elected as soon as the position was established. He resigned in 1922 to accept the position of Teacher Training Supervisor at Cthenj Kutztown State Teachers College. He later served as superin- tendent of Whitehall Township schools until his retirement. It was he who was faced with the building of new schools, including the high school and the organization of a complete public educa- tion system. Succeeding Mr. Landis was S. Clyde Franken- page I0 field, who rose through the ranks of teacher and principal. Mr. Frankenfield brought many innova- tions, including a permanent record system, the 6-3-3 organizational plan, which also brought con- struction of the junior high school, special edu- cation, and others. Now retired, he left to become supervising principal of Catasauqua schools in 1930. From 1930 to 1961, our beloved Dr. George A. Eichler held this position. Gentle but firm, he was the helmsman through the consolidation, the new high school, and innumerable other prob- lems, plus constantly striving to better school- community relations. ALBERT L. HENRY, B.A., M.A. Superintendent of Schools Our present superintendent, Mr. Henry, came to us four years ago with a sterling reputation for compe- tence in education. The formidable list of innovations initiated since that time testifies to that. His ideal is teaching youngsters to live a useful, productive, up- right life, and he constantly strives to attain its reality. He has varied interests, among them hunting, golfing, and reading, he has also assumed an active role in the community. ln school, students respond to his genuine warmth and interest.

Truth for his armor ALBERT M. LERCH, B.S., M.Ed. Director of Guidance and Activities Although he is one of the busiest persons in the school, Mr. Lerch always makes himself available to discuss any problem, whether it's vocational, education- al, or emotional, with any or all of us, and usually seems to come up with a solution. He has an unswerv- ing desire to guide young people toward the achieve- ment of their goals and to prepare them for their life's work. Scheduling assemblies, administering exams, and our problems keep him busy, but he's never too busy to be a friend. MRS. JANET SCHAADT 'X- Our very efficient, capable, and most accommodat- ing secretaries constitute one of our most important assets. ALFRED LAUBACH, Ph.B., M.A. Administrative Assistant The morning announcements, which Mr. Laubach makes, are invariably the harbinger of a hectic day for him, a day which takes him to iust about every nook and cranny of the school in the performance of an end- less series of tasks - endless in diversity as well as in number, and many far from being pleasant. You would expect successive days like this to sour the spirit of any principal's right-hand man, but that of Al, as he is af- fectionately known, is indestructible. His warm friend- ship and hearty laugh survive even the last period, and we love him.
