N 45 High bchool by the forty-'two members of the graduf J . , . . ating class of 44. However, it is our purpose that, through issuing this repertory of memories, these days be vividly imprinted in our minds. Even though there was an uncertainty of the publishing of the yearbook because of the circumstances due to the war, plans were made and preparations advanced. We strived to obtain the best despite government regulations and restrictions on paper, photographic supplies and various other utilities. Since the panther was adopted as the school symbol and is found on our athletic suits and band uniforms, the class of '44 unanimously elected it as the name for our yearbook. This step was taken because the members were of the opinion that to do so would be consistently carrying through this symbol. Thus this issue of the annual publication is to have for its appellation Hffhe Panther. REESE K HE S PANTHER Y 51 K HE PANTHER Class Prophecy june 3, 1964. Dear Diary: What a day! And it all began with just an innocent act. Upon rising this morning, I decided to trade in my plane, which I had bought secondfhanded, for a new '65' model, just on the market. Consequently, I went down town to the Plane Cofop of which I was a member, to look over the streamlined types. The manager, who was very cordial, turned out to be Lloyd Melhorn, a fellow highfschool graduate. With his assistance one was selected and I was eager to try it out. After considering possible destinations for its hrst trip, I ended with the thought of attending the opera currently being presented at one of the opera houses in New York. It seemed best to get in touch with the company in order to reserve tickets. The voice of the telephone operator sounded familiar, and being curious I asked her name. She replied, Anna Mary Krone. I wondered then if this would be a day of reassociation with my former school acquaintances. On the way home from work, temptation to possess a new nylon evening dress seized me, so, with the thought that it would be suitable for the planned evening, I entered a store. The competent sales lady who advanced toward me answered to the name of Ruth Fulton. My analysis of the day was proving correct. When arriving in New York I stopped at the public hangars in which I left my plane until I was ready to return to York. The man who was to give me my parking check looked familar. When he drew closer I noticed that it was Melvin Householder. He directed me to the place where I could obtain a taxi plane to the opera. After I was seated comfortably, the driver turned and proved to be none other than Gloria Waltimyer. Unaware of the other occupants, I heard someone say, Hello there! I looked where the voice came from and saw the smiling faces of Betty Stottlemyer and Beatrice Snyder. I asked them what they have been doing with themselves and the former replied, I have just returned from the Qlympics in which I took first prize for the IOOfyard dash, And Beatrice said, I'm on my way to a national icefskating contest, after winning the state contest. Going places, eh? We were so busy with our conversation that we arrivcd at our destination before we realized it. Alighting from the plane and reaching the main floor by means of an escalader, we went to the box office. Looking above the window I saw that the name of the girl in charge was Mae Price. I lowered my glance and sure enough it was she. She told us that in the check room, which was to the right, we would find Nora Linebaugh, another acquaintance. So we took our coats over to her, and, much to my surprise, already talking to Nora was Ethel Myers with her husband and children. After speaking a few words with her, it was almost time for the opera to begin. The usher in charge of the automatic chairs was Carl Hinkle, He put us in our respective chairs, set the controls and thus we were taken to our places. The most beautiful orchestral music was filling the house. I could not help but remark to the person sitting nearest, how much it impressed me. She answered, Yes, and I find on the program that the orchestra is under direction of john Beshore, who, I believe, is known to both of us. I looked at her and in spite of the darkness I recognized one of the Power's models, Kate Fuller. The fact that I was sitting beside an old friend made the performance even more enjoyable. We settled back in high expectation as the announcer whose voice sounded like that of Donald Everhart's warmly greeted us. The curtains drew apart and as the story progressed who should appear on the stage but the hero of the performance, Rodney Reese, singing a famous aria, in his tenor voice. As if that weren't enough, dear diary, there came on the scene then a 'petite' heroine with light brown hair, hxed so as to give her a radiant appearance. The costume also added to the atmosphere and she broke forth in a response to the love song just sung by K THE PANTHER Rodney. Running through my mind were these thoughts: I think I heard that voice before . . . . I'm quite sure I have, but not lately .... It must have been about fifteen or twenty years ago. Where could it have been and who? .... Why, I believe it must be associated with school. Of course, why am I so forgetful! It's Phyllis Detwilerf' During the first intermission I could not restrain myself from going backstage to congratulate them. I was not the only one desiring to se-e them, for upon arriving behind the scenes, a considerable group of photographers and newspapermen were gathered about the dressing rooms. One of them spoke to me, and I exclaimed, i'Well, William Zortman, what are you doing here? He answered that he had been working as photographer on a New York newspaper. Then he also said, You see, we're one of the first papers to take kodachrome news pictures and print them in their natural colors. By this time the stage manager, Paul Weaver, who had been trying to get rid of the publicity men turned them over to the advertising manager by the name of Samuel Hykes. He then came over to talk with us and stated the advisabilty of waitng until it was all over to walk in on the characters. But as a compromise he offered to show us around a little and see some other people whom we probably know. So for about fifteen minutes we were escorted around, stopping first at a door marked Ann Kottmyer, Costume Designer. We were just about to knock, when the door opened. Seeing us, she couldn't move but stood there with her mouth open and finally said, Well, for heaven's sake! She insisted upon taking us to some of the other offices, so away we went. Seeing another door with the name Ross Black on it, I asked what he had to do with this. Sam Hykes who had joined us after shaking off the news hunters, replied, He is the person responsible for all the coiffures, but right now you would not be able to see him. Perhaps afterwards, though. Thinking we had better go on then, we were confronted by the general engineer, who said, If you want to see the rest of the opera you had better return to your seats because the lights are being dimmed. We replied, Thank you, Harry Kochenour, we shall. The second part was just as beautiful as the first and as the curtains closed for the second intermission there seemed to be some kind of confusion several rows ahead of me. I was just rising, when some one came hurrying back the aisle and seeing me said, Do you know anyone here who is a doctor or a nurse? lla Mae Fullen has just fainted: I've given her some First- Aid but I think a doctor should be called. It was Doreen Crist and I was afraid that I had to say, No, when Kate who was still beside me offered, I happened to see June Leckron on the first balcony and she is a nurse: in fact, she's almost ready for her doctor'5 degree. I quickly started in search of her, assuring Doreen that I'd bring her down then. However, when I reached the balcony, I remembered Kate hadn't said where June was sitting. I was going to go down again but I heard someone utter, Are you looking for something? It was none other than Betty Clay, who with several guests, occupied one of the prominent boxes. I asked her if she had seen june. She hadn't but her guests, Madelyn Lehr and Doris Faircloth, said they knew where she was and Doris consented to take me over. On the way she related that Betty had married into a wealthy and socially prominent family, which fact could be verified by merely looking at her clothing and jewelry. As for Madelyn, she was married to an Admiral in the Navy, stationed in Washington, D. C. Doris, herself, had made a successful marriage and was very happy. We had reached Iune's seat and after I stated my purpose we hastened downstairs to the rest room, where they had taken Ila Mae. By this time she was conscious, but the doctorftofbe said she would stay with her for a while. I saw Doreen talking with someone on the other side of the room and went over. I heard her remarking, You see, Vale, I have been able to practice First Aid because of the social work I am now engaged in down among the slums of New York. Naturally, we were glad to see Vale McFarland again and as we walked back to our seats she told us that she had become private secretary to the president of a company making material from glass. As the final curtain closed, after the curtain calls, I went back stage once more, This time I got to see Phyllis and Rodney and we decided that together with several others, such as the K HE PANTHER radio controllman, David Eppley, the television operator, Phyllis Ahrens, and Ann, Ross, Sam, and some others, we would go to a nearby club. Thus we did so after they had removed their cos' tumes and makefup to change into their own clothing. The clubfrestaurant was a very modern place, as well as being friendly and cheerful. The Hrst one to greet us was the hostess of the club, Kathryn Keesey, who took us to a table, where we were able to see almost everyone. We began looking around after we sat down and suddenly Rodney cried, L'If it isn't Abie and Dorcas! They saw us at about the same time and came over to our table. Everyone was excited, trying to Lalk at the same timeg but finally we became quieter.. Consequently ,lay explained that he was Pilot Grove of a passenger plane and on the same one Dorcas Ehrhart was hostess. With a pleased voice, he said, Guess whom we recently brought back from China? After we tried without being correct, he told us. 'iOn my last trip from the Far East I brought our own 'Nipperf Eugene Charleston, You know he is our ambassador to the country of the late ChiangfKaifChek. In a very short time they were due at the airport and as they were taking their leave, our waitress, Donna Hostettler, came for our orders. While sitting there I suddenly realized that I had left something in my coat and needing it I started toward the check room. Someone passed me and nodded, but I went on without heeding the gesture. Dorothy Glassick who was in the checkroom got my coat and getting what I was seeking I returned to our table. I was greeted by being called stuckfup, etc. I asked them why and received the reply that the persons who had nodded to me were Elmer Hull and Thelma Kann. They had stopped to talk with the other members of our group and had gone already, Their only reason for coming was that they wanted to make reservations for some of the students of the commercial college of which she was Dean of Women, and he was Dean of Men. I was truly sorry I hadn't recognized them but my spirits were soon lifted because the entertainment featuring Gloria Grove had started. She had become a very good dancer and we applauded very heartily at the conclusion. All through the evening we were recalling our school days. Things like English class, class plays, the headaches we had while working on the yearbook, not having homework hnished, commencement, P. O. D., and class outings. Also in the background, though not very bright, was the war which had accompanied our school days. However, it became very late all too soon. It was necessary to leave and we regretfully said goodby. All of us parted except Phyllis Ahrens and I, who were travelling in the same direction: she lived close to the public hangers where I left my plane. We secured a taxi and when on our way, Phil suddenly remarked, Did you happen to see Jeanneve Zerbe there tonight? When you had gone for your coat, she came in escorted by a man. She has been an old maid and now probably after all these leap years she got herself a husband. It seemed as if today I had either seen or heard of our whole graduating class. I repeated to Phyllis all whom I saw since rising this morning and we came to the conclusion that there was one remaining-Phyllis Schaeffer. We parted at the hangars and I took my ticket over to Melvin, paid my bill and got into my plane. I glanced at the one that was coming in and surely enough there was Phyllis Schaeffer. I could do no more than wave, hoping she had seen me. So, diary, I came home and got ready for bed. I was simply bathing in memories since seeing all my old school friends and, glancing at the stand beside my bed, I saw the 1944 issue of 'The Panther. It was our own yearbook and for the next hour I leafed through it comparing those years with 19641 what we were then and what we are now, the world then and the world now, war then and now .... peace. When I closed the book I determined to write it all to you. Now, hofhum fpardon mel, I'll turn out the light and go to sleep. But HrstA Thank you, God, for friends and peace. 511 Q 'ikvimfffx 5 N if -pg ffl Jfirwpl + M Q' 'f F Www 'HH iq Y fm Wlwgmllrlx mix , U NSHQTTN , - 'N 1 ' wx' Ii ' . ' 1 H ,J 70 K HE PANTHER And so we port- - - As this book is being published, that awful terror, War, is hungrily devouring the world with a blind greed. It is our fervent hope that in the notftoofdistant future this horrible monster will have been overcome. Then, while recalling our high school days by browsing through The Panther, there will be no thundering accompaniment of cannons, guns and bombs. However, in this our graduating year, the picture into which we step has not a very bright background. To almost all of the boys graduation will mean conscription to the armed services. The girls will follow their plans which are probably somewhat altered because of world conditions. But to all of us it presents the opportunity of the supreme challenge of setting forth the utmost of our abilities in the shaping of a new world relationship. Whatew'er we do, may the spirit of our theme echo our actions that it is :aid of each member-L'He helped build a better world by living his best. Then, pray God, we will sing of the whole world as well as of America: HO beautiful for patriot dream That sees beyond the years Thine albaster cities gleam, Undimmed by human tears! America! America! God shed His grace on thee, And crown thy good with brotherhood From sea to shining sea! 71 iii W 321. Y, ,i3i2?22e2f fax viii? M M 1- we M1454 1, 55134 3 w1:gMf:,,q4,S-QL ,ml .
