The Sparkler Varsity Baseball With Paul Brandt and Paul Everhart as hurlers for Coach Ruby's diamond hopefuls, the team tied two, won four, and lost six. Batting power is supplied by Clair Fry and Nelson Snyder, for defensive stability the coach found Sherwood Landis, Bruce Ruby, Daniel Poet, and Russel Witmer dependable. Clair Fry led the hitters with an average of .462 for the games in which he played. Nelson Snyder followed with a .356 percentage. Paul Bverhart, Clair Fry and Bruce Ruby had perfect fielding averages among those who played in four or more games. The mile relay team Won its event at the Shippensburg State Teachers college meet and ran sixth at the Penn Relays.. At Red Lion Nelson Snyder Won the shot put While Clair Fry placed sec- ond. ln the same meet Charles Yinger took first place in the broad jump. Bruce Ruby, Keith Ruby, Billy Bair and Paul Everhart finished third in the mile relay at the county meet, Max Klinefelter was a member of the relay team in other meets. ln dual meets North York's cinder team defeated Manchester, 59-16, Spring Grove, 51-38, and Red Lion, 45-26. The class of 1939 contributed heavily to the success of Coach Leber's team this year. No less than eight of the consistent point-Winners on the squad Were seniors. Among these Were: Keith Ruby, Bruce Ruby, Captain Ioe Stough, Max Klinefelter, Nelson Snyder, Clair Fry, Roy Krebs and Billy Bair. Their lone competition was in the County interscholastic Field meet at Red Lion, May l3. The volleyball team, composed of eight members ot the girls' track squad, played in three tournaments during the past season. The tirst one was With West York, the second with Dillsburg and the final playott With West York. The team Was victorious in all three tournaments and as the result has Won tor the past three consecutive years the York county scholastic girls' volleyball championship. The tournaments were conducted in place of the one held in previous years at the Red Lion Track and Field meet. At Red Lion the 50 yd. shuttle relay team, composed ot Mary Good, Mary Buehler, Louise Rittall and Ruth Fink, finished ahead ot West York and Dal- lastown. Geraldine Boyer took second place in the baseball distance throw. Mary Buehler -also Won the red ribbon in the basketball distance throwf Mary Good ran third in the 50-yard dash. Major achievements tor the girls' track team were tirst place team honors in the annual county tield meet at Red Lion, May l3, and the Winning ot the volleyball tournament at West York, April 29. Lack of material was the main reason for the defeats suffered by the frosh. The outstanding victory of the season was a l4-ll defeat of Red Lion, the tra- ditional foe of the Orange and Black. West York, city rivals of the locals, Won the league championship.
