The admittance being granted, the Freshmen stepped over the threshold into an institution of high learning. The first days were days of confusion and hewilderment for the Freshmen and, of course, it was the duty of every new student to respect the upper class- men and even to take the uncomplimentary comments ofthe juniors and Seniors jokingly. , Finally adjusting themselves to the new situation the class proved to be a group of studious, likable pupils who won the respect and esteem of even the dignified Seniors. The first important event in the history of the Freshman class was the election of officers, which was held April l5, 1935. Professor l. R. Snyder was in charge of the meeting. After a vote concerning the desired clubs had been taken in the entire student body, mimeographed copies of various club programs and their purposes were distributed in each room in order to allow a period of consideration on the part of the pupils before the organizations were actually formed. Members of the student body voted in favor of six clubs, among which are included the Art, Dramatic, Library, Science, Mathematics ,and Booster Clubs. These Clubs are under the supervision of teachers who are, in some manner, connected with the respective clubs. These organizations have afforded both educational and, at the same time, entertaining training for the students. Membership was not compulsory in any of these Clubs and there were some students who were not affiliated with them, however, by far the greater number has supported this extra- curricular activity new to North York. Several of the organizations have been beneficial to the school in some way. The Art Club seemed to have taken the lead in such helpful projects. lts members have made posters advertising basketball games, class plays, bazaars and operettas, most of which had to be purchased from a com- mercial printer previously. Mernbers of the Library Club have mended and cataloged books along with other useful work in the school library. The Booster Club has done its bit in urging people to attend basketball games. The other activity organizations have helped their members individually. -q 44 5- Ulla efpazgfgz, 1935 Science Club The Science Club, under the supervision of Mr. Mitchell, has been very active in that few months of its existence. Every member has taken part in the programs, and has rendered various interesting talks and demonstrations in the three fields of science-physics, chemistry, and biology. ln physics demonstrations have been given in radio and arc lighting, in chemistry elec- troplating and tho manufacture of artificial rubber, in biology an examination of various microscopic animals and the parts of bees. Besides the regular bi-Weekly programs, the Club has made a collection of newspaper clippings, dealing with the latest developments of science. Each member brought the clippings to William Blessing, who classified them until a considerably large collection has been made. They gave demonstrations of checking addition, division, multiplication, and subtraction by casting out nines. How Mathe- matics Helps My Father in His Occupation was discussed by several mem- bers. 'llhe origin of the metric system and the measure of length, cubic and capacity were explained. The story of the Greeks and Romans and the life of the mathematician, Thales, were considered, also. The members were constantly busy with interesting projects. The officers, as elected when the Club was formed, were: Rosella Beam, president, lennie Knaub, vice-president, and-Elizabeth Skelton, secretary. The instructor was Miss Burket. A few of the subjects discussed by the members during the meetings were the mending of books, use of card. files, arrangement of the books in the li- brary, method of taking inventory and cataloging of books. Many of the members were appointed to committees which took charge of small duties in the library, such as the replacement of new magazines and newspapers and keeping the books in repair. These duties aroused a keen interest of the members in their Club and library. The founding of this organization made possible the appointment of ex- perienced and well-instructed librarians, which was never possible in pre- ceding years.
