THE LOOK AND SOUND of '68 became evident in this year's Pep Club. The look was 112 girls in red derbies making sounds of enthusiasm throughout the basketball season. Tear 'em up signs showed opponents that to us happiness was stomping out anyone in the path of the Trojans. Victorious or not, the Pep Club continued with confidence that their encouragement was an invaluable asset to the team. The difficult organization of the club was accomplished by the Pep Council, pictured below. It consisted of the cheerleaders, class representatives, and Mrs. Huber, sponsor. Officers were Donelle Strand, President; Jill Geiger, Secretary; and Judy Clark, Treasurer. An Enthusiastic Pep Club Cheered the Pam Lewallen, Sue Brower, Judy Clark, Cathy Bryant, Donelle Strand, Deb Bockman, Ginger Shipley, Mary Jo Conway, Alesia Watson, Charis Snyder. 9 Clubs Show New Directions in 10 Modern Art Dominates Show ROW 1: S. Boy and girl representatives were chosen by each class independently while presidential candidates gave speeches to the student body. After campaign issues were presented, students chose a president in a democratic election. Lead by Ron Shipley the Student Council sponsored a Morp Dance, the decoration of the school for Christmas, Contrast Days, Homecoming, and generally tried to boost student-teacher relations. Homecoming took place November 17, I9G7 with the Trojans battling Bethany. Two weeks earlier candidates for Homecoming Queen were chosen by each class and as the day grew nearer classes campaigned and rivalry increased. That night Donelle Strand, Senior candidate, was chosen our 1967 Homecoming Queen. 14 Dana Berghorn, Dave Strombeck, Melanie Pifer, Betsy Buis. Becky Gant, Ron Shipley, Phil Moore, Gary Brown. W.H.S. Before leaving my adopted home town of Fort Wayne I decided to say good-by to Cheryl Hine, Hefner Chevrolet’s best salesgirl in the Vette department. While there I was surprised to see Teri in the shop having her husband’s 'vette tuned up. Well, that bug is now charging down 13 toward that little hamlet we all know as North Webster. Many of our class have now fled from this friendly little haven but some remain. I wasn’t surprised to find Mark Minnick now managing the Crystal Flash when I stopped to fill 'er up. And I was pleased to be waited on by my old friend Donny Guy, now the Don Juan of North Webster. While driving out of town I noticed two pretty young girls changing the name of the town on the city limits sign. It seems Barb and Dawn are now on the Town Board and revising it die legal way. Going on north I stopped to visit the Mr. Wizard of our class, Twylla Ulery, and enjoyed observing her teach a chemistry class at E.I.T. Leaving Elkhart, I noticed a new House of Bridgestone and stopped to tell the management how dangerous ’cycles are. It turned out to be my old buddy Joe Holle and he informed me that he knew how dangerous they were but that his wife, Donelle, a nurse in the local hospital, needed the business! Heading back south I stopped to purchase some articles in Syracuse and discovered that Mike Lewallen is the new head of the Thornburg chains. He now has John Kroh in the back room unpacking crates. Way to fight, Mike! Speaking of Purdue graduates, I noticed an article in the paper about a couple down that way that are practicing team-teaching on the LaFayette campus. Congratulations to Ron and Cathy! Switching on my AM-FM Supersonic Bendix radio, I heard a familiar voice. Why of course it's Linda Howe on WOWO! She was conducting a panel on gun control laws and seemed to have a lively discussion going! I decided to stow the bug back in Fort Wayne and take a plane for part of my trip. Arriving at Baer Field I was happy to see a familiar face at the ticket desk. It was Miss Diana Barrett, an airlines executive, literally on her way up. On the plane I couldn’t have been more happily surprised than being seated next to Joyce Raver, now a very experienced world traveler. She told about an interesting art exhibit she had seen in New Orleans. It was conducted by our former classmate, Les Smith. Marilynn had some interesting things on display and is receiving rave notices from the art world now that Kent is doing her promotions for her, besides running his new home-building concern (Brower's Better Builders). Having some time to waste while waiting for a plane switch in Chicago, I glanced at the latest issue of Time only to find Dr. Mary Beth Gaskill on the cover. It seems that she's been doing a great deal of research on a new type of brain surgery which has gained her respect and admiration from eminent people in the medical profession. Arriving in sunny California, I found many of our old classmates enjoying life in this new type of atmosphere. Dr. Anita Reasoner, an eminent authority on secondary education, was giving a lecture at Berkley. Jane Morehead is now operating a profitable beauty salon serving the elite of Hollywood. Speaking of the acting profession, Charlie Baker seems to be creating a new era in films reminiscent of the years of Clark Gable. Nancy Konzelman is deeply involved in the social life of her suburb of Los Angeles, and her grace and charm are giving her parties an important status. At the party I was pleased to attend, many prominent people were on the guest list of whom the great evangelist, Paula Ganger, was certainly of great importance. Also there was Becky Gant who recently completed a book on the new morality in this country. In San Francisco I talked with Admiral Ray Davenport, who has carved a successful career for himself in the Navy. Flying eastward again, I stopped in Wyoming to visit Phil Moore’s Dude Ranch which has gained national fame. Under his employment was an old classmate of ours, Ron Drudge, in care of the stables. Back in die Midwest Rog Cormican and Garry Gregory are both employed in the engineering division of International Harvester. Sue Brown and Billie Willard are in charge of the data processing department. And who should be the man in charge of farm equipment testing but Max Richcreek. Driving through Indiana again, I stopped in a small town pizzaria owned and operated by Mr. and Mrs. Jim De-Long. The business was flourishing and was aided by efficient counter girls, Shirley Clark and Pat Ross. In this same town I found Connie Willard, now running her own variety store. Seems like the name of the place was Williamson s . Her able bookkeepers, Vicki Ward and Duina Spearman, are managing quite well. Arriving back in Fort Wayne I stopped for a dental check-up and a chat with Dr. Mary Jo Conway. We speculated on the events of the upcoming election. The tour is over, and it proved most enjoyable. The divergent interests of a great class of individuals have led them into living most profitable lives. 28 1968 Class Wills I,_________ do hereby will and bequeath--------. Rhodes 109 Elementary Life Ill Hlumnt From 1911 to 1968 The first school in Tippecanoe Township used in 1838 was a subscription school as were all the schools in the county up to 1853. Subscription schools were maintained by private support with teachers' salaries ranging from five to fifteen dollars per month. In the early 1830's Warren Warner built a cabin as a home but returned to Ohio. In 1838 his brother Thomas K. Warner came to Indiana and converted the building to a school and served as its first teacher. ■hhhHIH— Intil 1910 the only school in North Webster was a grammar school located on the site of the present Ihurch of God. (It is pictured on the previous page.) At that time students who wanted to attend high chool went to Warsaw. Trustee Henry Strombeck started the building on the present site in 1910. le died that year and his son Milo Strombeck was appointed to serve in his place and completed he school in 1911. During part of that year there was a temporary high school located where the iresent town tavern is situated, near the lumber yard. When the school was located on the present ;ite William Howard Taft was President, the Governor was Thomas R. Marshall. Charles A. Great- house was Superintendent of Public Instruction, and the County Superintendent was E. B. Sarber. 112 The front portion of the school as well as the gymnasium and side area, was added in 1928 under the supervision of Trustee Milo Strombeck. This 1936 picture shows the gymnasium which which burned in 1956. The southern addition to the school, completed in 1950 by Trustee Ira Nine, added much-needed space and facilities to the building. In 1956 the gymnasium was rebuilt and several classrooms were added. At that time Glenn Whitehead was Superintendent of Public Instruction and Everett Smith was the trustee. The present school, as pictured, contains a northern wing which was built in 1966. The addition contained an elementary library as well as four classrooms. Lewis Immel was Superintendent of Lakeland Community Schools with James Stucky Serving as president of the school board. The North Webster School was incorporated with Syracuse and Milford into the Lakeland Community School Corporation in 1962. 113 Glimpses of Basketball The first court was outdoors, a far cry from the polished floors of today, and the players practiced in all kinds of weather. Coach Glen Whitehead is flanked by Harvey Saidly (1.) and Harry Bause (r.). In the background is the south side of the original schoolhouse. I 14 The North Webster team won its first County Tourney title and added this lovely cup to the trophy case. Team members, FRONT ROW, are Devon Phelps, Wallace Irvin, Lennel Weimer, Edward Schlect and Gene Kline; STANDING are Charles Gross (Principal), Warren Morehead, Colonel Likens, and Glen Whitehead (Coach). Millard Tom was also a member, but is not pictured. It took thirty years, but North Webster came up with another County Tourney winner and captured the coveted silver horseshoe. In fact, this team went on to win the Sectional, and was runner-up in the Regional Tournament. Pictured are, FRONT ROW, James Butler (Mgr.), Doug Bowser, Lewis Neibert, Robert Likens, Nub Niles, Jim White, and John Valentine (Mgr.); STANDING are Floyd Baker (Ass't Coach), Sid Spencer (Coach), Sam Popenfoose, Warren Sloan, Jerry Rhodes, John Weimer, Daryl Hill, and John Ed Nine (Mgr.). 1953 1967 By playing the games one at a time the Trojans won another County Tourney title and added the third county trophy to the case. They also captured the silver horseshoe. Pictured are Candy Leinker. Sherri Rider, Sara Jernigan, and Marsha Bockman (Cheerleaders), and Jane Vanator (Mascot). SECOND ROW, Terry Bowser (Mgr.), Charlie Baker, Rick Stalter, Burt Culver, Rick White, Barney Culver, Mike Lewallen, and Tim Hine.
