Text from Pages 1 - 72 of the 1954 volume:

SbeJi eaicauon tii We, the class of 1954, wish to dedicate this yearbook to the fond memory of our classmate, Roger Keck. A sound came ringing through the night, A drowning man gave an urgent call, Without one thought for his own life, Our Roger ran, then gave his all. One race was won, another lost, And yet, in our weak human way, Would we dare say one race was lost, For a hero, he was, on that very day. Strange it seems without his face, He just was here, but not no more, And yet we know he can't be far, He's just beyond another door. 2 ALTONIONS BELL LYRE CORONETS Noreta Henwood Thames Hickman Jim Techtmeyer Jerry Smith Fred Clark SNARE DRUMS CLARINETS Kay Koontz Donna Fidler John Nine Davie Heath Janet Luce Judy Koontz SAXOPHONES Corene Richwine Judy Brown BARITONE Norma Barnhart Martha Fordyce Jack Smith Benny Black BASS DRUM Bob Kellam TROMBONES TWIRLERS Kate Miller Ed Niles Fran Likens BASS HORN Jim White Beverly Tom Vern Fawley Lowell Engle Elaine Boman INSTRUCTOR: James Greiner DRUM MAJOR: Don Heche Compliments of Compliments of EWERT MOTOR SALES BERGER'S BARBER SHOP Lincoln Mercury Warsaw 4 North Webster, Indiana FIRST ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT: Dixie Guy, Jean Maloney, Peg Rhodes, Norma Richcreek, Noreta Hen-wood, Janet Kellam, Pat Fuller, Corene Richwine, Diane Fuller. C faAS There was something extraordinary about that September day in 1950. It seemed like any ordinary day to most people, but not to the teachers and students at North Webster High School. A brand new Freshman Class was initiated into the school as the Class of 54. Our class consisted of 29 members. We were all very green and very, very frightened. Not much was accomplished that first year. Four of our class members, Lowell Buckner, Bruce Kuhn, Judy Denekas, and Jack Smith, left us. At the beginning of our Sophomore year, we were a class of 30 members. New at our school were Carroll Thomas, June Conley, Dave Abbott, Bob Kellam, and Jack Clark. As Sophomores, we were a little wiser, and managed to sell plaques, jackets, and cookies. In October we took a trip to Chicago, visiting points of interest. In May we ordered our class rings. Our Junior year was a busy one selling concessions every noon and art; every home game. On September 26, 1952, we presented Deacon Dubbs, a three act comedy. To our receptive community we sold Christmas cards. During the Mermaid Festival we sold concessions. We gained a new member this year, Shirley Butler, but she soon left us again. Then another member, Mary Lou Gaerte, also left us. Now, we are Seniors--happy and a little sad, knowing this will be our last year together. Soon after the beginning of our Senior year we started a very busy schedule. First came magazine sales breaking all previous records. All too soon, Christmas rolled around, and everyone was in the holiday spirit. During our vacation an unexpected class meeting was called. It was a very solemn meeting, for at this time we learned of the death of a very dear class member, Roger Keck. After our vacation we became very busy again with graduation getting nearer and still so much to be done. We served at two of the Lion's Club Banquets and produced The Bishop's Mantle on March 19th, a terrific drama in three acts. We also presented new stage curtains to the school in memory of Roger Keck. Our class lost another member this year, Jack Clark, who moved away. We also gained two members from Anderson, Diane Fuller and John Masters. Another member, John Nine, finished the last semester in Washington, D. C. , but was present at our commencement. After graduation we embarked on our trip to the East. Compliments of STATE BANK OF SYRACUSE The Bank of Friendly Service CROMWELL ELEVATOR Cromwell, Indiana GRIFFITH DRUG STORE Phone 2-J Cromwell, Ind. 33 CLASS POEM Another year is over, The school has closed its door Another group has finished, Tis the Class of '54. The Seniors have had their finals The diplomas have been handed out, The trip is past and over And almost forgotten, no doubt. Its members are scattered far and wide For better and for worse. And just to help in remembering them These lines are written in verse. The class had 30 members Who started out the year, But at Christmas there came a sadness, For death had entered here. And then just shortly afterwards Another left us too, But John had gone to Washington, His calling there to do. Each class should have some officers To help direct the way. And see that never a member, Should ever go astray. A 3 year man is Johnny Weimer, As prexy of his class, He is the order keeper And directs what comes to pass. Doug Bowser is the Assistant, If Weimer is not near, Carroll Thomas keeps the minutes And Anna's the financier. John and Diane are new this year. From Anderson they came, They hope to be a happy couple. If all continues the same. Others have the same intentions, And the days can't go too soon, June is waiting on the Air Force, And Roger on 'that day' in June. H L GARAGE Auto Repairs Compliments of Battery Service BOCKMAN'S VARIETY North Webster North Webster Sam Popenfoose is quite the flirt, He has them all a jitter. Bob Kellam's just about as bad, For he's a ladies' kidder. Ellen and Phyllis are the Etna girls, A giggly pair are they, And together with Shirley Ann, Life for them is happy and gay. Dave and Mel are another pair. And noted for different things. They've had their warning many times, But I haven't seen any angel wings. Among this class of famous men, Butler and Strombeck are the bashful two. But give them a chance in a year or two, We'll see just what they're able to do. Three of the girls have definite plans, In the future what to do. Dawn as a nurse, Leora a teacher, And Buthean giving hair shampoos. Dixie lives in a carefree world, And Elaine does just about the same, Eileen is enthused about the coming year. And Martha is serious about a change of name. Jim White has learned his way around, In getting from place to place, And Martin Koher is not far behind, For he's very close in this big race. Dick and Rex were bosom pals, Until, somehow, this final year, Each has found a different friend, That might cause a change in each's career. We can't forget the one that is gone, Gone to that other land. For Roger went a step ahead, When he tried to give a helping hand. These are the Seniors of '54, A typical bunch are they, And to each and all we say Good Luck As you travel on 'Life's Big Way'. The annual showed all smiles, but if you could have seen us after graduation you wouldn't have seen many smiles. We were missing school already. All of the members have been very fortunate and successful. John Weimer, the class president, is now married and makes his livelihood farming. His three boys are a great help to him.
