With only one senior on the team, Mrs. Synder and Miss Mason found themselves working with a very young but dedicated team. Jill Martini and Doreen Williams were this year's captains. Freshman Lori Mack was the most improved gymnast, The team record was 1-7. Their best meet was against Hackettstown. Hard work finally paid off when the girls were rewarded with a win. The hockey team's record was very impressive with a 6-8-3 record. Led by five seniors, the enthusiastic attitude maintained was one apparent to all. There wasn't a doubt that their leadership was indispensible. One of the factors leading to the team's progress was their coach, Miss Faunce. Because she emphasized good skills and taught the girls to execute them properly during play, she helped the team's record. A long sought out victory was won over a big rival, Belvidere. The team succeeded to shut them out with a 2-O score. The goals set were accomplished, enabling the team to be one of the best ever to play for the school. The team would like to thank Miss Faunce, the seniors, and most of all the fans for a great year. Good luck to next year's team. New Coach Brings New Techniques and New Spirit! I4 During the five minute halftime the team listens to constructive criticism and praise from the coach. Kathy Anderson, the only sophomore playing varsi- ty, was dependable and showed real improvement throughout the season. Although Cindy Dugan only played two years of hockey she proved her athletic ability again by constantly 'Khe- ing there. She worked very closely with the goalie and was appreciated by everyone. Heidi Spera, a junior, was a great player. She was not only the high scorer but was named to honorary teams including all state. Spirit was very evident among the girls. JV Has Winning Season! The JV field hockey team did very well this year, as they had a winning season. The team's record was 6-5-4 a big improvement over last year. Many of the games were very exciting because the girls always fought hard and tried to make the best showing they could. The team's best game was a 4-0 win over P-burg Catholic. They worked well together in the game and were rewarded for their work. Miss Chisesi coached the JV team this year and did a great job with the girls. She worked closely with the head coach and really led the girls well throughout the season. Even though the majority of the team was new this year, they had a lot of fun and as anyone can see, did an outstanding job. Left to Right, Top Row: B. Farley, C. Struble, W. Wolff, S, Styring, l. They also placed second overall in the DRC. Senior captain Maryann Lantinga led the team in spirit and in running. Her teammates showed their appreciation by voting her MVP. Freshman Alice Ball and Jenna Murray not far behind her, displayed great talent. Although the team will be losing one of their leaders, they look strong for next year. Junior captain Jim Shotwell was the only returning letter winner, he also led the team to most of its victories. He was closely followed by: Alan Mazurowski, Brian Simpler, Tom Schilling and Ron Janda. Next year's team looks very promising, as it won't be losing anyone through graduation. Good luck to next year's team. Junior Alan Mazuroski placed 10th in the DRC run and first for the Patriots. Ron Janda displayed great talent for a first year runner. The team, a group of dedicated athletes, proved their ability by winning three out of four state games. The school and community were extremely proud of them. Senior Randy Moore was leading scorer on the team and in the area with a total of 37 goals. Through his efforts, he was named to many honorary teams. Being a great asset, senior Allen Bickhardt, a first year player, played goalie in many regular season games and started in the state games. The lady patriots record of 12-9 earned them a standing in the state and DRC playoffs. It was Mr. Wieboldt's second year in coaching and his experience showed. Competing in the DRC for the first year placed the team in tough competition. Maryann Lantinga was one of the area's leading scorers. She and Heidi Spera led the team in scoring. The highlight of this season was when the team came from a deficit to defeat Hackettstown. In the fourth quarter the girls outscored their opponents 13-1 and ended the game with a 36-34 victory. All in all, the girls enjoyed playing. Good luck to next year's team. Junior co-captain, Heidi Spera, who averaged 14 points per game, drives through defense for 2 more. The amount of improvement shown by these girls was proven when they defeated Hackettstown the second time after having lost to them the first time. Going up against very tough competition the girls never gave up. Mr. Poecker did a good job of teaching the girls that what they lacked in skills they could easily make up for in hustle and desire. Young Team Beats Belvidere! Boys Basketball Coach, Mr. Ducatte, was faced with a very young team this year. Senior Mike McDonald will be the only player not returning to next year's team. The rest of the squad consisted of 6 juniors, 4 sophomores, and 1 freshman. Supplying the team with their leadership abilities were two outstanding captains - senior Mike McDonald and junior Glenn Sweet. The most dramatic game of the year was home against Belvidere. One factor that led the boys to a 45- 44 victory was the support that the home fans gave them. The most important game for Coach Ducatte was the 67-65 win over Phillipsburg Catholic. This was a confidence-builder for the young team. When Mr. Ducatte started out here, his goal was to win the D.R.C. Championship in three years. Next year will be the year. An outstanding attitude toward the game itself, self-improvement among individuals, and improvement among the team as a whole, led the team to the D.R.C. playoffs this year. In addition to placing third in the Morris Catholic Christmas Tournament, they also placed third in the Kittatinny Tournament. As individuals, the guys did fantastic. Take a Trip to the South Pacific Rodgers' and Hammerstein's South Pacific takes place during WWII. It is the story of people's struggle to overcome innate prejudice so that they can find love. This conflict centers around the main characters: Nellie Forbush, a navy nurse and Emile deBeque, a French civilian. Nellie feels she can not marry Emile because his first wife was Polynesian. Lt. Cable arrives on the island and falls in love with a lovely native girl, Liat. This ill-fated romance is similar, as Cable finds he is unable to ask Liat to marry him. To help themselves forget the pain of love, Emile and Cable volunteer for a mission. When Cable is killed, Nellie and Emile see the pain and sorrow prejudice can cause. They realize their love is what is important. Linda Mitchell had her first musical lead as Nellie. Randy Moore came back for his second year. They were Humor from Homer and the Leonardo daVinci Spring Car. In Humor from Homer the members had to create a humorous version to one of the given chapters from the Odyssey. They chose to do the chapter where Odysseus meets the Cyclops Polyphemus, alias Polly. They had to write up a script, make props, and puppets, and practice until there wasn't a flaw to be seen or heard. The Leonardo daVinci Spring Car had to be powered by springs only. The crew had to navigate a course of 150 feet, stop, and even reverse all within 10 minutes. To add variety, the car had to start out as a 16th century vehicle and half way through the course was to change into a 20th century automobile. This year's Anatomy and Physiology class was a tight knit group that not only shared in a learning experience, but shared in a lot of fun, too. The teacher, Ms. Merrifield, preferred to look at the human body from the aspect of physiology. When the class did study Anatomy, the skeleton was very useful. Although the class had various names for him, none of them were official. In addition to dissecting cats, the class learned to type blood, take blood pressure, and grow cultures. The cultures were of whatever the students wanted and they ranged greatly. One student had a fly walk across his culture, another student let her dog lick it, and yet another girl let hers sit in the refrigerator. From there, they learned to transfer and find the optimal temperature for their bacteria. All in all, the class learned quite a lot. Even if they do not enter a medical profession, the general knowledge about themselves will always follow them. As the agar boils, C. Dugan makes a culture transplant. E A knowledge of the different types of fungi and bacteria allowed Ms. Merrifield to help B. Dean and H. Spera determine what their cultures contained. 110 Top: During a lecture, the skeleton made himself quite comfortable. His ad- vice . . . Pass Anatomy or you'll end up like this! Left: B. Sikkes looks close- ly to see if the antibiotics that were put on her culture have begun to attack the bacteria. Above: D. Yurga poured the agar plates for another culture transfer. 111 They Are Here to Stay' Computers are no longer some type of space- age technology one would see in the moviesg they are here and here to stay. Our school is keeping right up with the times. Teachers and students alike could be found using these time-saving machines, this year. Quite a few teachers kept their grades in the computers This gave them the ability to inform their students on even a weekly basis, what their grade average was. The students used the computers to help the school, including the absentee list. The yearbook staff and basketball team made use of these machines, also. Mr. McDermott has incorporated the computers in the Office Simulation class and next year will be offering a six month class in computer usage. 112 Office Simulation Benefits All The Office Simulation class not only prepared the girls involved for a job, perhaps right out of high school, it helped the school out in many ways. These girls were involved in a number of everyday occurrences. By allowing them to take care of things like the absentee list, it allowed the secretaries time to devote to other school related jobs. These students never let down. So, those involved in Mr. McDermott's Office Simulation class deserve a big thanks for all of their work. R Walker found out just how many phone calls Mrs Drew gets in one day the hard way! Hey, Dig This!! A first year course at North Warren, Anthropology provided an insight into local history. The students had the opportunity of excavating at a site in Hope, N.J. This dig was so successful a second trip was planned. During these trips many interesting artifacts were found. lt is an educational class while being lots of fun. It is hoped that there will be even more digging and field trips. mf' P J. Keiper, S. Artistic expression can be presented in many numbers of ways. Metal working is one of them. In metal shop class, students are allowed to show their artistic ability. But, before the student can be free to create a project that he himself designs, there are processes that must be mastered. Some of these include arcwelding, metal fabrication, and benchwork. Under the supervision of Mr. Dolan, this year's metal shop classes let their imaginations go and created many practical and impractical projects. For the past few years, it has been a common sight to see young children riding in wagons, or holding onto a rope with some other people, who happen to be quite larger, following them. These people are students in the child care class. They begin the year by learning about childhood development. They also learn about toys, and they learn lots of nursery rhymes and songs. It's not uncommon to hear some older people singing these songs on their way to English or math class. The second part of the year is the fun part. The children come. The students are then responsible for lesson plans and for the basic care of the kids. The class is fun for anyone who likes little children. The children got to experience something new, being on skis. Cheryl Whipple found that one of the most interesting dishes in gourmet cooking class was oriental pancakes. 124 Creativity Expressed in Home Learning the sewing lingo is one of the hardest obstacles to overcome. Seniors: In his: The Best of Walden and Civil Disobedience, Thoreau wrote two passages which we want to share with each of you at this important time in your life. Every man's life is like a long road which leads to himself, and If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drum, however measured or far away. On graduation day each of you will have completed a segment of your life's road which has passed through the doors, halls, and classrooms of North Warren. Your travels have gained you many memories and experiences you will never forget. Graduation will present many new avenues. Hopefully this past segment of your life will help you continue down that road to a happy and prosperous future. 1. . Choose your roads wisely, steps cautiously, and always be willing to is We learn. Thoreau also wrote: Men say they know many things, But lo! They have taken wings - The arts and sciences, And a thousand appliances: The wind that blows Is all that anybody knows. Good Luck! san cere ly, WM- LQ Cu W 174 Dear Class of 1983: I would like to take this time to wish you all a happy and successful future.
