Some seem depressed after taking a test, others are worried, trying to remember where they put their homework, but mostly you’ll find smiles in these long halls. We had some good times this year. Whether we were seniors ready to graduate or freshmen just beginning, we had fun. Remember? Some kind of hair disease was caught by the foot- ball players in the middle of the season that left paw prints on their sides, and didn’t the seniors win Spirit Week? Some might say it was an uneventful year, but it won’t ever be the same. Opening 9 SPIRIT WEEK Spirit Week in the fall saw North Union students enthusiastically at- tempting to beat each other out by hoping to score as many touch- downs as possible. The seniors won by loading the money cans with spare change and dollar bills, win- ning the week's competition with 616 points. The juniors also did well placing second with 515 points. The faculty trailed with 463 as the sophomores posted 312 points and freshmen 275. The most memorable event of the week came on “Rock T-Shirt Day . Faculty members banded together wearing some of the wildest shirts they could get hold of. 10 Opening Opening 11 1986 Queen Amy Eastman crowns Terry 1987 Queen and King Renee Mathys, Terry Parish 1986 King Ted Starks crowns Renee 12 Opening 1987 Football Captain Keith Young presents the game ball to Renee and Terry . Although he is gone, the memories he left will always be. He taught us a lot—not only in the classroom or on the field—but also in life. He was a strong man who made us strong. He was a proud man who made us proud. He was a winner who made us all winners. He will be greatly missed by all—but never forgotten. F. C., P. N., and others 62 Prom “In Our Wildest Dreams” was the theme for the 1988 Junior-Senior Prom. Mrs. Soltis and Mrs. Fillinger, ad- visors for the Junior class, deserve praise for providing needed leadership in helping the “Dreams” theme be- come a reality. With dinner, music and dancing, and games available, everyone attending had plenty to do in order to be entertained and to make the evening a suc- cess. The Junior class also deserves credit for working consistently to make decorations so that everything was ready on time. 64 Sports Sports 65 1. Finally, the season culminated with a CBL championship (captured in Lon- don); a District championship (Berliner Park in Columbus); and Ginger Becket qualifying for competition in the Regionals and the State Girls Meet. CATS EXPERIENCE FRUSTRASTING YEAR In retrospect, the '87 football season was disappointing to Coach Christopher, his working staff, and players. Undeniably, the disappointment stems for the 3-7 won-loss record. Expectations were high after the Cats had post- ed an encouraging 5-5 mark the previous year. That, coupled with two heart breaking defeats at the hands of Buckeye Valley and Jon- athan Alder, made the season a difficult one. Highlights were: a come-from- behind win over Marion Catholic, and the late season win over Olentangy. Award winners: First team All- CBL: Phil Nickel - punter; Fred Crumb - linebacker; Second team: Ken Marvin - defensive back; Dan Jamison - defensive line. The Cats, after finishing 4- 16 the previous year, came back to post an overall record of 17-7. That included a CBL champion- ship mark of 12-4 and runner-up spot in the District finals. The Cats were able to win two tourney contests, defeating Rid- gedale and Buckeye Valley, be- fore bowing out to then-undefeat- ed Columbus Academy. Another highlight was the win over Olen- tangy earlier in the season. Fred Crumb was the team’s leading re- bounder while Eric Krebchennc led the team in scoring, free throw percentage, steals and assists. LADYCATS HAVE “CLOSE” SEASON Many close contests character- ized Coach Nancy Rubeck’s ’88 edition of the LadyCats softball team. Eight games were lost by one or two runs during the season. Yet, despite the frustrating de- feats, the team still wound up with an overall record of 12-14. Coach Rubeck, speaking of next spring, said that the underclassmen gained a great deal of experience and that a good season is immi- nent. The highlight of the year had to be the road victory against a solid Marysville squad. Minnie Carpenter garnered ALL-CBL 1st Team honors while Carla Hoffman and Jodi Schultz were 2nd Teamers. Honorable Men- tion went to Michelle Kitchen, Ann Bills, and Dawn Ridgeway. Team Awards were: Batting Champ: Carla Hoffman (.500); Team MVP’s: Minnie Carpenter and Carla Hoffman; Most Im- proved: Michele Herd. Varsity 88 Row I M. Carpenter, Coach Rubeck, M. Kitchen. Row 2 J. The Wildcats, with Central Ohio RBI Champ Fred Crumb leading the way (58), scored a school record 326 runs during the season. Appropriately, many awards came the Wildcats way. Four players landed ALL- CBL honors: Dan Jamison, Steve Edwards, Fred Crumb, and Eric Krebehenne; Second Team: Ken Marvin and Phil Nickel; Honor- able Mention: Brad Cunningham and Tom Eastman. Team MVP and Batting Champ: Fred Crumb; Most Improved: Brad Cunning- ham. The JV squad, like the varsity, had an outstanding season. LADYCATS- A GOAL ACHIEVING TEAM The 1988 North Union Girls Track Team set high goals for the season—and, with strong efforts by team members, were able to reach many of those goals. The team compiled a 5-5 mark in dual meets and also had some outstanding finishes in the following: 3rd place in the Mt. Gilead Relays. 4th place in the Richwood Relays, and a 6th place finish in the Whitehall Relays. The 1600 meter relay team (A. Parrott, M. Hamilton, R. Salyer, G. Beck- ett) set a school record of 4:16.7 and also competed in the regional finals. The 3200 meter relay team (W. Barr, C. Young, G. Beckett, S. Atherton) placed in the Dis- trict Finals. Tina Nicol also placed in the District in the 800 meter run. Senior Anne Parrott and Ginger Beckett contributed immensely to the overall success of the team. Parrott set school and league marks in the 100 high hurdles. In addition, she won the CBL Central Division 100 and 300 high hurdles. Ginger Beckett was 3rd in the State in 3200 meters; she became the Richwood Relays 3k record holder; she made the all-CBL team for the 1600 meter run; she also won the league’s Cen- tral Division 3200 meter run. Finally, Coach Metzger issued a special thanks to seniors Anne Parrott and Sheila Carpen- ter, both of whom made contributions to the success of the '88 team. 88 Varsity Front Row J. Inskeep, A. CATS TAKE RICHWOOD RELAYS The “88” Wildcat Boys Track Team concluded another fine season which saw them drop only one dual meet. They also achieved a third place finish in the league meet and a second in the Mt.Gilead Invi- tational. However, the highlight of the season was winning the team champion- ship of the Richwood Relays. North Union was led by four year letter winners Jack Johnston, Kevin Perkins, Mike Karcher, and Reed Jolliff. Karcher ran the 1600 and provided valuable senior leadership. Perkins ran the hurdles and placed 1st and 2nd in the 110 and 300 hurdles respectively at the league meet. Johnston was the leader of the weight men and tossed the discus for a personal high of 135 feet and also threw the shot over 40 feet consistently for the year. Jolliff had a marvelous senior year: he pole vaulted 12 feet and made it to the regionals; he also made it to the regionals in the 400 meter dash and subsequently qualified for State competition in the same event. Also going to the regionals were two relay teams - - - the 1600 consisting of Dart Meyers, Matt Mayers, Kevin Per- kins, and Reed Jolliff; and the 3200 with Dart Meyers, John Galloway, Matt Ran- kin, and Reed Jolliff. Thad Lookabaugh also made it to the Regional Finals in the 100 and tied the school record of 11 flat. Award winners were: Newcomer of the Year: Thad Lookabaugh; Rotating Cap- tains: Mike Karcher and Jack Johnston; Wildcats of the Year, Scoring leaders, and Most Valuable: Reed Jolliff and Kevin Perkins. North Union High School honors its’ athletes after the Fall, Winter, and Spring sea- sons. These banquets allow coaches, parents, friends, and athletes an opportunity to “celebrate” the many accom- plishments of each team. Each coach talks about their season and pays tribute to individual team members. In return, the team oftentimes will gratefully acknowledge the sacrifices made by parents and coaches alike. These ban- quets are indeed fitting culminations to each sports season. 90 Sports Awards Sports Awards 91 NORTH UNION ACADEMIC AWARDS The Academic Awards Night at NUHS is a traditional year-ending “ceremony” for parents, students, and teachers. Everyone gathers in the gymnasium to honor those who have worked hard in the classroom and in extracurricular activities. This year’s winner of the Hall of Fame” award. North Union’s highest honor, went to Geoff Schultz. 92 Academic Awards Academic Awards 93 STUDENTS OF THE MONTH 94 Students Of The Month DECEMBER - HOLLY MALICOTE APRIL - MINNIE CARPENTER Students Of The Month 95 NORTH UNION STUDENT COUNCIL (Row 1) J.
