‘THE YEAR IN PICTURES 1987 WILDCAT Kip and Kevin arc our “Hon- ored” representatives for the opening section. The ever watchful yearbook camera, in a never-ending quest to capture the actions of the student body, dares to enter such places as the library, cafeteria, etc. The class of 87 deserves to be featured in our second section. After all. they have toiled for four years to get to this point. For a humorous, flashback look at some of the graduates, check out the baby pictures. No — The Juniors. A “snake dance” through the streets of Richwood, the pep rally at the bonfire (which featured appear- ances by the coaches, players, and cheerleaders) the Friday night game and hours of decorating prccccded an exciting dance on Saturday evening. The student council chose “On the Edge of a Dream as this year’s theme. The cafeteria was transformed by an array of balloons and a silver and gray color scheme. The ring decision was tough, there were so many new styles and designs. However, everyone was pleased when they finally arrived. In March the class held its annual Easter candy sale. Money from this endeavor will help in making next year's prom a reality. Finally, during the last two months, scheduling became a priority. IN MEMORY OF With the passing of Mr. LaRue early in the school year, the student body, as well as the entire communi- ty, lost a friend, colleague, husband, father, teacher and counselor. Mr. LaRue touched many lives and he gave freely of himself so others could have a better quality of life. He rarely lost his temper but would always stand up for his students. He was always willing to listen, give advice, or explain the difficul- ties of life — a life in which he spent all his energy helping students. Whether working painstakingly or- ganizing the student activities night, conducting Na- tional Honor Society inductions, holding a Students Against Drunk Driving meeting, taking tickets at a ballgamc, or helping a child solve a personal prob- lem, Mr. LaRue did not have a job, but a mission, A mission to share his life to help others grow . .. STEVEN A. LaRUE In Memory 57 ACADEMIC AWARDS The Academic Awards Night at NUHS is a special evening for parents, students, and teachers. Everyone gathers to pay tribute to the young people who have earned special recognition for their classroom and extra-curricular work. Each teacher presents individual honors for their particular subject(s). In addition to regular and advanced class awards, scholastic achievement test results arc announced. Finally, scholarship winners arc also presented to the audience. This evening is a fitting culmination to a year of hard work for all involved. The ultimate award, election to the “Hall of Fame”, went to Kristi Dotson. Academic Awards 59 STUDENTS OF THE MONTH September — Kristi Dotson October — Machelle Brown 60 Students Of The Month January — Kevin Ackerman February — Susan Clem March April — Christy Landon Mike Adams The dedication of the Junior class paid noticeable dividends for the '87 Prom at NUHS. “Mas- querade” was termed a legitimate success by virtually all who were involved. From pre-prom decorat- ing to a well-attended After- Prom, everything went as smooth- ly as could be hoped for. Students and guests danced to music pro- vided by a DJ. If dancing got to be too tiring, games were provid- ed in the well transformed Cafete- ria. Prom-goers even got to “make their bid” for a number of items during a late hour auction. Junior class President Geoff Schultz, speaking of the ’87 Prom, praised everyone’s effort that went toward the making the project a success. Special thanks were extended to Junior class ad- visors Jean Wedding and Cyndi Fillinger. June 5th — 1987 will “go down in history” as the date of Graduation for the Class of 87. To the ninety-six members of the class, it will be an easy task — it will always be a benchmark. Another reason to remember it will be because of a man they called “Lash”. The graduation ceremony was dedicated to Steven A. LaRue, a guidance counselor at NUHS who passed away during the school year. In his memory the Class gave, as its gift, a maple tree and dedication plaque. Vice-President Ann Verity spoke of Mr. LaRue, Sec. Treasurer Jennifer Foos announced the gift, and Craig Cooley, Susan Clem, Kristi Dotson, and Amy Biondi gave speeches as valedictorians. Music was provided by the NUHS Band; while Rhonda Goodwin and Wendy Veach sang “The Way We Were.” CONGRATULATIONS AND BEST OF LUCK TO THE CLASS OF 87! Graduation 67 Graduation 69 Lady Cats Have Winning Record Coach Modica's Cats ended their season beating Big Walnut but losing to River Valley in sectional finals action. For the season, the varsity squad went 6-5 in the CBL and produced a 12-9 overall winning record. Amy Eastman was the only returning letter winner for North Union but the Cats turned inexperience into success and expect to be an even stronger team next year with several returning letter winners. Amy was named Varsity MVP and Katie McDaniel received the Spiker Award. The Junior Varsity named Amy Crevison as their MVP. Opposite Page: 1. Head coach Jim Christopher, the coaching staff, a fine senior class led by co- captains Ted Starks and Rob McMahan, as well as a promising group of underclassmen combined to lead NUHS to a mark of 5-5, the best since joining the CBL in 1976. The key to the season was the Wildcats fast start — winning five of the first six games. The quick getaway included wins over: Elgin, Fairbanks, London, Olentangy, and Big Walnut. Those who received special team honors were: MVP: Ted Starks; Outstanding Offensive Player: Phil Nickel; Defensive Player: Fred Crumb; Captain’s Trophy: Rob McMahan; Scholar Athletes: Mike Adams and Jeff Rees. Other awards: Class AA All-Central Ohio District: Ted Starks and Phil Nickel; All-CBL 1st team: Ted Starks; Phil Nickel; Fred Crumb; 2nd team: Chris Ledley and Mike Adams. The varsity took championships at Riverdale, Colonel Crawford, and CBL, and the Central District. Another achievement was advancing to the Regional competition in Troy, Ohio — a pre-season goal. Ginger Beckett broke her own previous school record and placed well for the Cats the entire year. The cats lone victory came against Cardington. However, five of the matches lost were by close margins — indicating that there is talent in the Wildcat camp. The new season brought with it a new coach: John Grimes, who is the club pro at Blues Creek Golf Course near Marysville. It is felt that Coach Grimes will prove to be an invaluable asset to the golf program because of his teaching background. Three players will be lost to graduation: Mark Daymude, John Shuster, and Lacy Monroe. Award winners for the ‘86 season were: Team MVP — Mark Daymude; “Skins” Award — Lacy Monroe. Right 1.
