Fridays, pop quizzes, forgetting your lunch money, and of course, those impossible tests all make up four great years of good times. Nobody ever said it would be easy, but it sure is fun!! Isn't it funny how students attitudes change, like styles and fads. We look for- ward to the future when we can make our mark in the world. But it will take those with a great attitude to succeed. However, this didn’t dampen the spirits of the student body as the NUHS Student Council spent long hours decorating the cafeteria to the theme of Stairway to Heaven”. A new tradition was started as a king was crowned. The lucky guy was Randy Sullivan. Queen was Shelley Carrel. All in all, the homecoming was a great success. Oftentimes these are thought of as being merely time fillers or spiritless shout sessions. However, this year's cheerleaders wanted to get the student body participating and enjoying the assemblies. They planned and rehearsed for their skit presentations — and, it showed! The students at NUHS loved them. After the skits, the cheerleaders found it was easier to get everyone fired up for the upcoming game. A big thank you is extended to the NUHS cheerleaders. Pep Assembly 19 ABOVE 1. Just look around — everyone knows he's present. We re speaking of Nostalgia. It's impossible to prevent him from appearing. When a class, such as 1986. takes its' final bow, everyone thinks of the memories they have collected. Your school life” passes before you — with innumerable flashbacks to the past . . even to some events that, at the time, were thought to be trivial. It's a moment to be savored or even treasured . . . and yet, it is over so quickly that it almost seems unfair. The ceremony for the Class of 1986 included President Jodi White's farewell address as well as speeches from Co-Valedictorians Julie Nicol and Perry Parsons. Music was provided by the NUHS band and choir. The point needs to be reiterated — the ceremony is so short when compared to what the Class of 1986 went through to get there. INEXPERIENCE HINDERS CATS The 1985 edition of the NUHS Wildcats, led by first year Coach Jim Christopher, experienced the growing pains of a squad dominated by underclassmen. The Wildcats, despite an 0-10 record, showed marked improvement. One major factor in the disappointing record is the perennially tough schedule. Once again, The Cats played Olentangy, Columbus Academy, Dublin, and West Jefferson. The coaching staff and players are to be lauded for maintaining a positive attitude throughout the season. Major awards were given to the following players at the Fall Sports Banquet: Wildcat Award — Ted Starks; Coaches Award — Jeff Boyd; Captains Award — Dave Wasserbeck and Eric Stidham. (Row 1) P. For example: they achieved a 10-1 CBL record, earning them first place, while compiling an overall record of 19-7. They were also Sectional Champions by virtue of victories over Big Walnut, River Valley, and Highland. Finally, they earned a third place Finish in the Cardington Invitational Tournament. Highlights of the year were: a 3rd place finish in the Northmoor Invitational; a 3rd place finish in the Galion Invitational (a first-ever trophy for N.U.H.S. at Galion); a 2nd place finish at the Riverdale Invitational; and, 2nd place in the CBL (losing to Grandview by only 4 points). Individually, David Rankin had a 5th place finish in District competition and qualified for the Regionals. Wildcat of the Year honors went to John Parish. Elmer Arbogast, a freshman, showed potential for future seasons with some promising performances. Looking ahead to next year, expectations are high because only one senior is lost to graduation. Nine varsity players worked hard in the off season and the result was the first winning basketball team at NU over the past several seasons. The Wildcat season was highlighted by big wins over Marysville, Pleasant, River Valley, and Ridgemont. The season ended with a 55-52 loss to New Albany in the Sectional Championship game at Mt. Vernon. Coach Comstock pointed to a total team effort and Senior leadership as the key to the season. Unfortunately, it was more down than up. The LadyCats finished the year with an 8-13 mark, 7-9 in the CBL. Kim Nauman led this year’s squad in three categories and was also voted to the CBL First Team. For her efforts, Kim was also selected as a second- team All District player and Honorable Mention All-Ohio. Amy Eastman and Stephanie Herd were also honored with Honorable Mention All CBL, while Nauman and Herd were elected to First and Second Team All County, respectively. The squads' overall record was just as impressive as those words — the Wildcats sported an overall dual meet record of 8-1. Also, the Cats garnered a 2nd place finish in the annual Richwood Relays, with Ted Starks picking up the meet MVP award. Finally, N.U. took a more-than- respectable 3rd place finish in the CBL. Those teams and individuals who ad- vanced to regional competition this year are: the 400M Relay Team composed of Mike Moser, Ted Starks, Keith Atherton, and Lamar Gilbreath; the 1600M Relay Team composed of Mike Moser, Reed Jolliff, Eric Fuller, and Kevin Perkins; Ted Starks in the 100M run and 100M High Hurdles; and Jeff Boyd in the Pole Vault. Team and individual highlights were: a second place finish in the Annual Richwood Relays; and four members placing in the district finals: junior Christy Landon in the 400 run; junior Nancy Plotner in the 800 run; junior Jerri Irvine in 1600 run, and freshman Ginger Beckett in the 3200 run. The freshmen class had a definite impact on the girls track program. Ten of sixteen squad members were newcomers who, according to Coach Metzger, ran strong and hard, competing with the best. The overall experience of three juniors, three sophomores, and a strong freshmen class should ensure a very exciting and competitive future for the North Union Girls Track program. Following are the award winners at the Spring Sports Banquet: MVP — Ginger Beckett; Most Points Scored — Ginger Beckett; and Most Improved — Christy Landon. Opposite Page 1. Girls Track 65 ’86 BASEBALL- DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH VARSITY BASEBALL If you measure a team only by the number of victories recorded, then the 1986 Wildcats had an unsuccessful season. However, the team gained a considerable amount of experience through a full slate of non-league and CBL contests. Experience is a key word when analyzing the Gits. Oftentimes four freshmen were in the starting lineup . . . this bodes well for future seasons. As far as the immediate future is concerned, there will be only two starters departing via graduation: Co. Capts. Chad Cunningham and Ernie Jamison. The individual highlight of the season was a satisfying 6-3 win at Centerburg in tournament play. At the Spring Sports Banquet, Chad Cunningham was named Team MVP; Phil Nickel the leading hitter; and Tom Eastman the most improved. RESERVE BASEBALL The JayVees ended the season with a record of 10-10. The defeat of Col. Academy on the road was the memorable highlight. Also, another sectional title was added to the NUHS trophy case, as the girls chalked up an impressive win over Highland. However, the season ended abruptly with a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Columbus Desales. Coach Rubeck, speaking of the departing six seniors and future seasons, admitted they will be sorely missed — and then, issued a challenge to the underclassmen to measure up to the performances of: Stephanie Herd, Tammy Greer, Michelle Clagett, Kim Nauman, Gina Davis, and Amy Buyer. Those honored as CBL First-Teamers: Michelle Clagett, Kim Nauman, and Stephanie Herd; CBL Second Teamers: Tammy Greer, Amy Buyer, and Gina Davis; CBL Honorable Mention: Amy Eastman, Sherry Kavanagh, And Minnie Carpenter. In the fall we had a very successful candy bar sale. A major incentive for participants was: anyone who sold thirty-five candy bars got out of class to help with prom preparations. The onset of winter meant basketball — with juniors taking charge of game concessions. Thanks to all who helped during the games! The highlight of the year came with Prom. Everyone joined together with our new advisors, Mrs. Wedding and Mrs. Fillinger, to help make the prom the best possible. The theme of Almost Paradise brought with it many memories of hard work during the decorating process, an evening of excitement on the night, and an exhausted clean-up crew the following day. We can now look forward to our senior year with anticipation. 1985-86 Class Officers Ann Verity — Vice President Susan Clem — President Jennifer Foos — Sec. It was an experience I will always remember as one of the best times of my life and one of the most difficult. My Australian friends will always have a second home in America and I will always have a home and family in Australia to go back to. My host family gave me their home and their love, and really made me feel like one of their family. Will I go back?” Definitely!” My name is Gabriela Naves, and I turned seven- teen this past June 3rd. I found North Union High School to be very interesting. The school is smaller than in Mexico and different because we don’t move after classes, the teachers do! I stayed with the Doup family and will miss them when I leave. Everyone was nice and was there to help when I needed it. My most embarrassing moment at NUHS was my first day in school. First, I was late. Then, I somehow got into the wrong class. Finally, in front of the whole class, I was informed I shouldn't be there. After I Finish high school I plan to attend college and enter the public relations field. I have missed my family and am excited to return to Mexico. Thanks to all at NUHS! Top Right: Polly Coons; Middle: Renata Lima; Bottom: Gabriela Naves. STUDENTS My experience as an exchange student in the Unit- ed States has been an enjoyable one. Coming to a small community was an adjustment for me since I come from a large city. However, the students and faculty of NUHS and my American family made it much easier for me. Speaking of my adopted family, they treated me as if I were their own daughter. I will miss them, but I hope to keep in touch over the years. When I return to Brazil, it will mean back to school” for me. By the way, my classes run from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., leaving my afternoon to myself. I would recommend the exchange student experience to those who are interested and, if given the chance to do it again, I'd take it! The Christmas sale was a successful project. It furnished our treasury with over $1,500. This will be very helpful for future class projects such as the prom in 1988. All of the freshman members were very active on many committees and projects involved with the Student Council. The freshman class was well represented at Camp Michaels, Homecoming, Jostens Leadership Clinic, OASC fall and spring conferences, and other activities for the class. Being on Student Council took a lot of hard work and effort, but it was very rewarding for all of us. 1985-86 Class Officers — Jodi Schultz (Pres.), Tim Wingfield (Vice.) Phil Nickel (Sec Treas.)
