Doesn’t seem so long ago When we started in high school New teachers, old books and senior fairy-tales Of non-existent elevators and an underground pool. 4 .. . Growing up fast, learning to drive Responsibilities, jobs, homework, friends. Searching for parties (couldn’t find any) Detentions, Michael Jackson, and other social trends. 3 Two years of grueling schoolwork was gone Halfway through!” we juniors would cheer. Homecoming, Christmas vacation, Junior-Senior Prom Beginning to have fun, but the end was so near. 2 Searching for the right college, hunting a good job Being bossy, dressing cool, talking clever Taking our finals, then cleaning our lockers And closing them, slowly, forever. 1 ... Feelings are mixed on Graduation Night, Complaints from nervous Seniors like headaches 6 fever. Really proud, a moment of satisfying attention, then Saying goodbye to friends, but not forever ... Because all of our separate paths Have sprung from one common road And everyone should always remember: WE SHARED IT. And because we did, 0 will never come. — Rick Young V. President — P. Expectations were high — especially after winning four games in '83. However, a bad start, lack of depth, and overall inex- perience combined to produce but one victory — a season ending 21-6 win at Jonathan Alder. Mike Bot- kins, a four year letterman was named to the All-CBL defensive backfield; Brent Mathys, a two year letter- man was named to the second team All-CBL offen- sive unit (tight end); and Don Parrott, a three year letterman, was named to the second team All-CBL offensive unit (quarterback). 54 FOOTBALL FOOTBALL 55 Varsity Left to right — A. The overall record for the Spikers was 16-5 with a CBL record of 9-2, placing them both sec- ond in their CBL division and second overall in the CBL. Another team honor that the Spikers received was being ranked 7th in the Central District Coaches Poll for the last half of the 84-85 season. Individual honors went to: Carolyn Shields — Central District All Star Team, CBL First Team Most Valu- able Player, Michelle Clagett — 1st Team CBL, Amy Buyer — 2nd Team CBL, Kim Nauman — Most Improved Player. The Wildcats, with a win over Marion Pleasant, advanced to the second round of the state tournament. However, the season ended when Mt. Gilead won two closely contested matches. Speaking of Brent, he virtually rewrote the NUHS seasonal record book: Most wins (his record was 42-5): most pins (27): most takedowns (65): most team points (207): and the most nearfalls (82). Other Mathys highlights included a District Championship at 167 lbs., qualification for the State tournament for the second time by placing third at the Regional level, and getting his 100th victory of his career — another NUHS standard. Rick Young and Gene Thompson were other Wildcats who qualified for the Regional tourna- ment: Young at heavyweight, and Thompson at 119 lbs. Overall, the team set a school record for most pins in a season — 106. The team fared well at the District meet — placing 5th out of 15 schools competing in the compulsory routines. As the girls gain valuable ex- perience and self-confidence they are also improv- ing their flexibility and tumbling skills. There is little doubt that the gymnastic program is growing and Coach Ronda Wilds is looking for a better team next year. The 1984-85 Wildcat boys’ varsity basketball team ended the season with victories over Ridgemont and Big Walnut. Strong team efforts and good attitudes were the two main characteristics of this years’ team. The lessons and experience gained throughout the year will pave the way to future success for the Wild- cat program. First year Coach Steve Comstock, at the Winter sports Ban- quet, gave the following awards: Co- MVP’S — Ernie Jamison and Don Parrott; Coaches Award — Jeff Par- ish, Rocky Lowe, and Mark McGrane; Most Improved — Cory Howell; Defensive Player of the Year — Mike Moser; Offensive Player of the Year — Ernie Jamison. 68 B 0 Y S S T A T S RESERVE LADYCATS Left to Right: A. The 1984-85 basketball season was a rebuilding one for the Lady Cats as evidenced by their starting lineup: ju- niors — Kim Nauman and Stephanie Herd; sophomores — Amy Eastman and Kristi Dotson; and freshman — Anne Parrott and Minnie Carpenter. Other squad members included ju- niors — Cindy Oberdier and Tammy Greer. Statistical leaders were Capt. Kim Nauman, who averaged 10.8 points per game and 7.6 rebounds per game; Amy Eastman with a field goal percentage of 47.9%; and Kristi Dot- son, who led in free throw percentage of 73.3%. The Cats finished with an overall mark of 8-13. However, im- provement was visible by virtue of the tournament loss to River Valley 41-53. Earlier in the season RV had scored a 16 point victory. The 1985 Varsity Baseball Wildcats completed a successful spring season with an overall record of 18-13. The team finished with six consecutive victories and earned the second place posi- tion in their division of the CBL. Charlie Roberts, enjoying a fine senior year at the plate and in the field, was the team MVP. Another senior, outfielder Tim Barry, was the team’s most improved” and leader in home runs. Coach Forman, speaking of the year at the spring banquet, said the top highlights were twin wins over Columbus Academy and a home win over Buckeye Valley. He then challenged the 1986 varsity to continue to build on the foundation that has been built by the two previous classes.” JV’S HAVE A SEASON OF FIRSTS (Row 1) J. Mathys, R. Slone, L. Monroe, J. Five straight wins at the start of the year put the team on the right track ... and the momentum carried on throughout the course of the campaign. That beginning, combined with some smaller win streaks, enabled the Cats to finish the year with an outstanding mark of 14-6. Many firsts were established: first-ever wins at Big Walnut, Jonathan Alder, Elgin, and West Jef- ferson. Also, the team defeated Columbus Academy for the first time — a close-from-behind 4-3 triumph in the final inning. Coach Gardner praised Joe Mathys for his total of nine wins on the mound and Ronnie Slone for leading the team in hitting and stolen bases. Top JV pitcher — J. In addition, the Ladycats ex- tended their remarkable string of CBL championships to six and se- cured yet another district crown before losing out in the regional semi-finals to Zanesville Mays- ville. The year started out slowly but as the season went on, much pro- gress was shown. Jeff Parish, a four year letterman, who led the 1985 Cross-Country team, also was a great inspiration to the track team this year. His performances in track proved to be quite out- standing for the season. Jeff went on to Re- gionals and then on to State where he finished 8th in the 1600 with a time 4:23.0 and 10th in the 3200 with a time of 9:46.0. Both of these were new NUHS records. During the season, the team finished with a record of 6 wins and 2 losses for the dual meets. Overall, it was an exciting season for the 1985 track team and they are looking for- ward to making 1986 even better! ATHLETICS 77 GIRLS TRACK Kneeling: A. Kelly, A. Parrott, B. Beers, L. Peck. Waldo And Richwood Congratulations To The Class Of 1985 Go plocidly amid rhe noise and haste, and remember whar peace there may be in silence. As for os possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. If you compare yourself with others, you may become bitter or vain, for always there ore greater and lesser persons than yourself. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is o real possession in rhe changing fortunes of time. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You ore o child of rhe universe, no less than rhe trees ond rhe stars; you hove o right to be here. And whether or not it is dear to you, no doubt rhe universe is unfolding os if should. Therefore be or peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, ond whatever your lobors and aspirations, in rhe noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its shorn, drudgery ond broken dreoms, if is still o beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy. Good luck ond best wishes.
