NORTH UNION HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS 54 CLUBS 92 FACULTY 116 2 Hey, flip through these pages and relive the story of North Union High School, its 635 students and year 1977. The story is a good one. It's full of action, suspense and happy endings. Well, Fall is here. You still think it's summer but you know it's September. The Minutes drag on and on while your mind wanders back to those good old summer days of getting up late and basking in the sun- shine. 5 Now you got new teachers to get use to and it is back to homework, research papers and exams. Of course football games are great to go to and it is fun sitting with all your friends screaming and jumping all during the season. 6 f?- ii I FALL CANDIDS HH The new students come to high school unaware, unexperienced and not yet influenced by the spirit of the upperclassmen, especially the Seniors. They influence because they have experienced the sights and sounds and they are the spirit of the school. 7 The morning started out with rain and gray skies which cancelled the parade and many feared the game would be dismal. But just before the kick-off, the skies cleared and the Homecoming Queen and her court brightened up the day . Our queen was Deb Atherton and the attendants were: Kandy Kale and Janet Rinehart, Seniors, Junior Annette Robinson, Sophomore Peggy Kirk and Freshman Carol Wiley. HOMECOMING! As the game started, everyone knew that this was the day for DEFENSE. Neither team scored in the first half but in the second half, the Cardington Pirates capitalized on a fumble and scored. The homecoming dance with a great sound from Matriarch was a large success. 9 10 'A . HOMECOMING 11 Students getting involved in the many phases on the academic life of school. Sometimes life gets so rou- tine you can't find out what is happening. Where are you going Friday night? 12 13 Senior Coulterites 28, Junior Clausonites 0. What can you say? That was the story on Friday Oct. 22 when the annual Powderpuff football game was played. The senior offense was just too much for the jun- iors as they ran the pigskin into the endzone. The juniors kept their heads up though and congratulated the seniors for the great game. Everyone had a super time. 14 POWDER PUFF Powderpuff court is as follows: King: Greg Stinemetz; Sr. Attendants: Denny Hall, Tony Chapman; Cheerleaders: Bob Searles Bob Welch, Rick Neel, Gordy Gray, Bill Fry and Kevin Cowgill. Prince: Bill Taylor; Jr. Attendants: Dave Smith, Dave Perkins; Cheerleaders: Alan Perkins, Mark Wilds, Chris Sims, Mike Rees Lance Elliott, Jon Daugherty 15 So Fall is here and you lug your books and go to class and count down the days until June. 16 SENIOR BONG SHOW 18 19 20 21 ANNIE GET YOUR GUN” 22 Annie Get Your Gun was very popular with the audiences on Sunday and Monday nights. Despite the three-months delay, the cast members were nervous for the opening show. The railroad car, the shooting scenes, and the hilligan outfits added a wholesome lightness. Therefore, the purpose of Tri-Rivers is to supplement the course offerings of the participating schools with many useful and interesting vocational courses for both the high 26 school students and the adults of the district. Tri-Rivers JVS was primarily established to provide high school students, of all ability levels, the opportunity to select from a wide variety of vocational courses. These courses are for students who want, need, and can profit from vocational education. The courses are designed for eleventh and twelfth graders. However, ninth and tenth grade students who are 16 years old or older may be considered for any of the two year programs in which openings exist following the enrollment of eleventh graders. Before selecting a course, these students should be certain they ossess the math, science and English ackgrounds required for success in the course. TRI-RIVERS JVS Students should gain practical marketable skills, positive attitudes toward work, an understanding of the economies of the world of work, desirable social and citizenship attitudes, experience in work situations, human relations skills. 27 Graduates should be prepared to enter full time employment, enter college or technical school, qualify for a variety of apprenticeship opportunities, seek self-employment, seek military or civil service opportunities. Students enrolled at Tri-Rivers graduate from their own home high school, since Tri-Rivers is an extension of the participating schools, and not a separate school. The Tri-Rivers Joint Vocational School is located northeast of the intersection of State Route 95 and Pole Lane Road, just east of Marion, Ohio. Participating schools will have the responsibility of determining how their students will be transported to and from Tri-Rivers School. However, students enrolled in cooperative courses will be required to provide their own transportation to and from their place of employment. Students will be able to participate in all home school activities that are scheduled outside the normal school day. Tri-Rivers Joint Vocational School has only a six-hour school day. 29 31 UJ SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW 34 35 s 37 39 Self discipline is the difference between being a great athlete and a good athlete or an A student and a B student. The 1976 varsity season was one of rebuild- ing; with only six returning lettermen. Coach Wallace was our new coach, introducing many ideas to our system: all day summer practices, and new offensive and defensive strategies. Although our record was a disappointing 1-8, we fought hard throughout all our games. Our one triumph, a 31-0 mauling of Triad, was a clue as to what next year will hold. 4i Reserve Cheerleaders TOP: Rhonda Wilds MIDDLE: Debbie Gibson, Mare Stout BOTTOM: Karen Neel, Peggy Kirk, Pam Williams Not Pictured: Genia Starks 44 Varsity Cheerleaders BOTTOM: Joyce Waters MIDDLE: Kandy Kale, Judy Cooperider, Diann Atherton TOP: Carol Kerns, Deb Atherton 45 RESERVES: ROW 1: K. The 1976 NU volleyball squad can be labeled the best team in NU's history. Flanked by 8 seniors, NU volleyballers achieved what no other women's team at NU has accomplished to date—a sectional championship. Each year brings more achievements from Nil volleyball. This year we hosted our own invititional tournament for both squads. NU came out one of the most advanced offensive and defensive volleyball systems. We posted two All-MOC choices: Co-capt. Laurie Wiley, a second year letter winner, and Co-capt. Beth Rea, a first year letter winner. Honorable mentions went to Sonja Wallace and Charlene Sivey. VARSITY: ROW 1: K. Parks, P. Tevis, D. He also set a new cross country record of 9:57, finished as the MOC runner-up for the second consecutive year, and was the Ontario Invitational AA champion. Coach says, A lot of learning went into this year. We had a young team who from this year's opportunity to gain experience, should be able to play much better next year. We went two weeks in tne 66 middle of the season without any games because of rain. Then we had to go almost five games per week the rest of the season. The team sold candy bars and made enough money to purchase a pitching machine which is very helpful in the improvement of the team members. 67 In every organization, factions speak louder than I don't care to belong to a club that accepts words. people like me as members. We have committees which honor outstanding students of the months, and offer teacher appreciation day, we also have committees for entertainment during school and after school, for example-Dr. Ross, the hypnotist. We had some difficulty in completing the yearbook within our deadlines because of the two months we were out of school. The yearbook is completely different from earlier Cat tales. We hope that the change has given the opportunity to most students to have their picture in the annual more than once. This was the main goal that we tried to accomplish. We were very limited on pictures, especially toward the ena of the year because of the breakdown of the enlarger in the school darkroom. The Staff had many fine students working last year, but most of them were seniors. There were very few experienced underclassmen C L U BSI last year to hit off the 1977-1978 Cat Tales. North Union's FHA chapter is both a social and a service organization. This year the organization has done things from having a professional hair stylist come, to having a Chinese meal. Our main service project is earning money for Childrens Hospital. FHA gives its members the opportunity to become better family members and responsible leaders. 75 North Union FFA has strived to build leadership through various activities such as public speaking, parliamentary procedure, judging contests, community service projects, banquet, FFA camp, state and national conventions, and other activities. Some of the major accomplishments this year were 3 State Farmers; Jeff Hoffman, Gary Robinson, and Lee Foos, 18 members attended FFA camp. The Poultry Team placed 2nd in the State FFA Judging Contest. The members built gates for the barn renovation at the fairgrounds and helped with labor on the reconstruction of the barn. There were 300 members and guests who attended the annual banquet. FFA members: D. Allison, B. Besst, J. Brady, C. Carpenter, B. Coder, C. Coder, G. Cox, K. Davis, M. Evans, K. Farrington, G. But finding it and keeping it seems difficult to do; Difficult because we think that happiness is found Only in the places where wealth and fame abound And so we go on searching in palaces of pleasure Seeking recognition ana monetary treasure Unaware that happiness is just a state of mind Within the reach of everyone who takes time to be kind For in making Others happy We will be happy, too, For the happiness you give away Returns to shine on you.
