Text from Pages 1 - 168 of the 1970 volume:

NORTH UNION CAT TALES EDITOR . . . DEB ERWIN ADVISOR . . . TOM ANDERSON The primary objective of a teacher is to teach. But teach what? Mere facts—statistics —dates??? These factors may be a fraction of the over all equation, but a GOOD teacher gives much more to his students. A good teacher inspires his students to grope for an- swers, to explore his environment, to exhibit courage in the presence of hardship, perse- verance in times of frustration, and compas- sion towards others. This is the attitude with which Mr. Hoffman approaches teaching—as a learning experience between himself and his students. For his efforts, the Class of '70 dedicates this annual to him with our sincere thanks. MR. JOHN HOFFMAN Mr. Fetter - Superintendent Entering the decade of the seventies we are faced with problems of over-population, environ- mental contamination, delicate uncertain human re- lations and many others. Young people have acquired new freedom to do many things and now must learn to accept responsibility for their actions. The task of Growing-up is not an easy one. The vast increase in knowledge demands that we not only make the best use of our years of formal education but also that we continue our education throughout our lives. In addition to accumulating information and acquiring job skills, it is necessary for each person to develop moral, ethical and religious stand- ards and to establish limits in relation to the use of drugs, narcotics, alcohol and tobacco. Many of these decisions must be made relatively early in life. A happy and successful life requires planning, dedica- tion, faith, and a considerable amount of effort. With all of the potential problems, life in the seventies should be faced with anticipation, determi- nation, and optimism. I wish each student and mem- ber of the staff of North Union High School the ful- fillment of his highest hopes and fondest dreams. SCHOOL BOARD 6 Marvin Hall, Jesse Conrad, Jerry Anderson, Kenneth Foos, Charles Brown, Maynard McCloud. Mr. W.D. Cochran - Principal The worth of a school is measured not in dollars and cents, but in the achievements of its students, and in the quality of their subsequent participation in the social, economic, and civic life of their society. Thus, the ultimate and tru- est evaluation of North Union High School of the year 1970 cannot be made until long after its present occupants have departed. I have a pro- found belief in the basic abilities and social val- ues of the great majority of our students. To the class of 1970, I say that it has been good to have had you as a part of us; it has been professionally interesting to have participated in your sometimes falteringbut generally steady program toward maturity. We've come a long way together, but it is well that you now go on to new companions and fresh challenges. Sincerely, W. D. We began the year with an unusually small treasury. Some of our p r o j e c t s throughout the year were a bake sale, a candy sale, and a car wash. We were also in charge of the concession stand at all the home basketball games. Many members of our class have also participated in extra-curricular activities and in scholastic achievements. We are now ready to become Seniors and to set examples for those to follow. 38 Bill D. Baker Bill L. FRESHMAN CLASS This year the Freshman Class had a very rewarding year. We came with fears of our upper-classmen, but soon adjusted and went on to have a very enjoyable year. We had a very successful year in football and track, and won a championship in basketball. At the beginning of the year our grades were not as high as expected, but as the year passed, they improved. As class projects we had a bake sale and a dance which proved to be very successful. 52 Roy Allen Robin Apt Bruce Baker Mark Barteld Bill Barteld Robert Beightler Joe Bell Joyce Benton Mary Blain Robert Blue John Boggs Elsie Bowen Joan Bradley Sandra Bright Carol Brill Westley Britenstine Steven Brown Tom Bruce Carl Butz Melodie Chapman Mike Chapman Russell Combs Brad Conrad Keith Cowglll Angie Davis Vickie DeBolt Jerry Dowler Tonda Drumm Linda Earhart Mildred Earhart Larry Eastman Valerie Eastman 54 Rick Fletcher Rick Foley Tom George Nancy Glass Debra Goins Alice Goodwin Ron Gray Jim Gruber Tom Gwyn Patrice Hagenlocker Rick Hall Marcia Hamilton Beth Harrison Donna Hendrickson Kwana Hickok Sonny Hicks Diane Hileman Junior Hileman Shaunene Hillman Walter Hitt Eric Hoffman Joe Howald Randy Jenkins Randy Jividen Steve Jolliff William Jolliff Ken Jones Terry Jones Vicki Jones Philip Kavanagh Geoffrey Kersey T erry Kilfian Danny Krebehenne Debbie Lambert Karen Laughorn Deborah Lingrel Tim Livingston Laura Lookabaugh William Lowe 56 Toni Lucas Peggy Marvin Dennis McComas Greg McElroy Jeff McElroy Janet McKnight Beverlee McMahon Karla Meddles Mike Miller Rod Millington Roger Millington Rhonda Monroe Blanchard Moore Dana Morgan Pat Morgan Greg Mount Rick Mount Guy Mowery Leanna Moyer Dan Nelson 57 Sherri Northrup Melisia Oberdier Terry Patton Gary Penix Debbie Ralston Mike Rausch Tim Rayl Jim Reese Gary Roseberry Larry Rubeck John Sandusky Randy Ross Roger Rush Geraldine Savage Bonnie Rowland Mike Sanderson Sue Schmelzer Cindy Schurch Nancy Sidle Patti Skidmore Debbie Smith Julie Smith Lisa Smtih Phil Styer Don Tanner Marilyn Tevis Mary Tevis Mike Tosco Yayon Smith Steve Speakman Joe Speyer Penny Spitler Debbie Stults Julie T ravis Steve Warwick Susan Waters Debbie Webb Larry Webb Sandy Webb Robyn Welch Terry Welsh Mike Wibley Denise Wilcox Edra Wilds Cathy Wiley Lu Ann Wiley Tony Williams Rick Winkle Robin Winkle Skip Woodruff Rick Wygal NOT PICTURED Dan Campbell Erlene Combs Dan Duncan Keith Maugans Mike Sayre 61 SPORTS 1970 CENTRAL DISTRICT (A) BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT 5 NORTH UNION m «. «goM JEFFERSON tor U to. Fred Reese takes a few Mt. Gilead players for a ride. The Wildcats set the pace for the season against Marysville on the first play with a 55 yard touchdown on the kickoff. The Golden Gophers of Ridgemont received the same fate in another North Union romp. The Cats re- peated a shup-out performance with Highland receiving the short end of the score. North Union came back at the half to take the sec- ond conference win over the Barons in a pen- alty plagued game. North Union assumed the number one spot in the conference after a win over Cardington. In five games, the Wildcats had tallied 151 pts. to their oppo- nents 20. North Union traveled to Midvale for a replacement of the Olentangy game. The Big Blue of Indian Valley North fell short with Steve Chapman accounting for 102 yards in 26 tries. Catch a Falling Star! Don't look now, but you're being followed!! The Wildcats failed to continue the win streak after a outstanding effort against Mt. Gilead, North Union led in the statistics but couldn't overcome the 6pt. run byMcCracken of the Indians. Conference championship hopes blossomed again as the Cats tough de- fense and driving offense toppled the Eagles of Big Walnut, Out-looks for the final game against Marion Catholic looked bright as the team went into the game with a 7 and 1 re- cord. Chances for a share of the conference title vanished in the mud of Memorial Field as the Cats again topped the statistics but fell short in the scoring. The Irish took the lead with 1:17 left to play, and time ran out before the Wildcats could start a sustained drive. DON SIMMONS The years come and go with their myriad of activ- ities. During the school years many things occur upon which are built the dreams and memories one so cher- ishes in later life. Athletics certainly provides several pages in this book and the 1969 Footballers have es- tablished for themselves a powerful chapter. There are many personal qualities and physical attributes neces- sary for a team to be a winner on the field. The Wild- cats possessed enough of these things to enable them to drink often from the sweet cup of victory. For the record and for the memories the seniors leave a re- markable mark of success and a beacon for future Wild- cat warriors.
