T Richwood North Union Public Library THERE ARE OB- VIOUSLY TWO ED- UCATIONS, ONE SHOULD TEACH US HOW TO MAKE A LIVING AND THE OTHER HOW TO LIVE—JAMES TRUSLOW ADAMS SEEING M UCH, SUF- FERING MUCH, AND STUDYING MUCH, ARE THE PILLARS OF LEARNING.- Disraeli. As our high school careers draw to a close, some memo- ries bring us joy; some bring us pain. Some teachers we have respected and admired; in some we could find little to admire. Always, however, we remember a few teachers whose association has served to bring inspiration. There have been a few whose fair play, honesty, and integrity have influenced the lives of all who have come into their contact. Mr. Fritz Drodofsky is such a man. Sir, we salute you. SENIORS SALUTE MR. DRODOFSKY. AD MIN I Mr. R. D. Fetter, Superintendent The Class of 1969 should be proud to be the first to graduate from the new North Union High School building. While other classes will have the advantage of the new facilities for a longer time, they will find it difficult to top the achievements of this first graduating class. Members of the Class of 1969 have excelled in every phase of school activity and the entire school community is very proud of their accomplishments. However, records are made to be broken and each achievement of this class can be topped if the students who follow have the will to leave their mark by adding to the tradition of excellence that has been set by the first graduating class. Schoo Marvin Hall, Max Robinson, Lowell Harris, Maynard Me At a time when some young people in our country are finding it difficult to make a positive contribution to society, or even to conform to the established patterns of behavior, we trust the stu- dent of North Union High School will continue to recognize and accept their responsibilities to God, to country, to their neighbors, and to themselves. May your future hold every desire for which you are honestly willing to work. 8 'RATION e. : wneth Foos, Jerry Anderson, ud Quality in education is not a happenstance, sometime thing. It must be built consciously, carefully, cooperatively, and purpose- fully by students, the public, and the professional staff. It requires diligence and earnest work toward rewards that sometimes seem far away; it requires investment in the future without hope of personal gain; it requires dedication not called for in a contract or always reflected in a salary schedule; it requires devotion to a common purpose. The emergence of North Union High School as a single entity is a major step toward making excellence possible. The leadership extent in the Class of 1969 has contributed mate- rially toward promoting in North Union High School the quest for quality. Mr. W. D. Cochran N.U.H.S. SECRETARIES Mrs. Ruth Reynolds Please don't forget, teachers are human beings Mr. Patrick Cronin Ball State University Ohio University University of Dayton Good Luck to all the graduating Seniors; I sincerely hope you experience success in obtaining your future goals. Specifically, the Guidance Department is concerned with the following: Educational Counseling Vocational Counseling Personal-Social Counseling Administration of the school testing program All students are most welcome to use the facilities offered by the Guidance and Counsel- ing Department. GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING DEPARTMENT At the high school level, in cooperation with the rest of the guidance department, we have been doing a great deal of work with vocational and educational counseling. We have developed a College Night for North Union students and parents. For the use of future juniors and seniors of NU, we are beginning a follow-up study of recent graduates. Mr. Donald Parsons Ohio University It seems to me that because most indi- viduals are rational humans, with proper aid they are capable of making their own decisions. It is within this philosophy that I approach counseling in school. The study of health is an integration of physical, social-emotional, and intellectual factors. The course is designed to give un- derstanding of organic and functional factors. Today's society demands knowledge of the psychosomatic. The new facilities in the field of Biology has enabled us to have a more laboratory- oriented class. This seems to be the modern trend in the Science curriculum. Chemistry and Physics have two main objectives; they are: 1. To learn basic facts and prin- ciples of physics and chemistry so that we can better understand the working of 14 DEPARTMENT material things and processes. 2. General Science is an introduction to science. The course specifically in- volves scientific measure- ment, atomic structure and energy, chemical changes, properties of matter, en- ergy, heat, light, earth, sun, weather, and biologi- cal science as it pertains to man. The basis of chemistry, physics, biology, and earth science are also included in the presentation. BUSINESS EDUCATION DEPARTMENT Bookkeeping, General Business, Office Practice, Law, Shorthand, Typing, Selling Business education has a two-fold purpose—to give all students who desire it a knowl- edge of business and skills for their personal use and to enable some students to acquire the skills necessary for employment in the business world. During the course of a school year, we are con- cerned with many types of music re- quiring various degrees of ability, and even the most indifferent student finds that he has musical likes or dislikes. We are indeed proud of our new music room. The large rehearsal area, the storage places, and the practice rooms give us the needed space for our expanding music department. Kent State University, Ohio University May the graduating class of 1969 have a Merry Christ- mas! Miss Pat Hopkins Band Otterbein College Developing coordination through musical skills Mrs. Marian Cochran Librarian Ohio State Uni- versity, Utah State, Ohio University, U CLA, Kent State LIBRARY I am proud of our new library and the way students are learning to use it. I am grateful to my library staff and Mr. Cochran's projection crew for their willing service. I am also amazed that the expansive counter is no foil for my ability to clutter. Still, I envy those who get to teach, for librarianship cannot duplicate the fulfillment I find in teaching. ADVICE: We cannot know what the future holds for us: therefore, it behooves us to seize every opportunity to prepare for that future diligently. INDUSTRIAL ARTS A comprehensive Industrial Arts program involves a study of the var- ious facets of man's struggle to con- vert raw materials into products to meet his needs as well as the servicing of such products; thus, in- volving a study of mechanical power, wood-working, metal working, in- dustrial crafts, and electricity. Emphasis should be placed on the teaching of both the operational principles and the scientific prin- ciples involved in each unit of study. JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS Tim Hamilton-Student Council, Pam Shoup-Secretary-Treasurer, Molly Morrison-President, Rick Dill-Vice President JUNIOR CLASS The Junior Class has worked hard to secure the money to finance the Jr.-Sr. Prom. Throughout the year we've had a record-breaking candy sale and we provided the concessions for all the home basketball games. Also, members of our class have excelled both in athletics and scholarship. Several boys were either selected for the Mid-Conference teams or received honorable mention. Others participated in the scholarship tests. Thus we've come to the end of another year, and are ready to take on the responsibility of being Seniors. Members of our class have participated in many of the extra-curricular activities, and they have done quite well. Our small class has shown a lot of enthusiasm and willingness to work this year. In the winter we sold Christmas wrapping paper as a money-making project which turned out suc- cessful. Each and every member of the squad must contribute their full talents and be dedicated toward that common goal. This squad not only rec- ognized the requirement, but met the chal- lenge with ample doses of physical ability, desire, cool, and dedication. It certainly has been rewarding to have been associated with the 1968 champions. Coach Drodofsky Co-Captain Gary Shaw Co-Captain Bill Robinson Co-Captain Nick Wall 1st row- S. Davis, S. Gray, D. Following shut-out conquests of Marys- ville, 26-0; Ridgemont, 60-0; and Highland, 36-0; the North Union Wildcat football squad met a group which could offer real competi- tion. On September 28th, 1968, the Barons of Buckeye Valley, a Mid-Ohio Conference rival, were very much in contention. Then a bad fourth quarter snap from the center to his punter cost them the ball and the ballgame. Gary Shaw, back, had four touchdowns and three conversions while Bill Robinson, quarterback, added another touchdown. The late rally kept the Cats undefeated as they won 38-30. North Union picked up victories 5 and 6 with lop-sided romps over Cardington, 51-18 and Olentangy, 54-8. Shaw, the conference's leading scorer, was held to one touchdown while Drake got two. Robinson, Wiley, and A. Hamilton added one touchdown each. Three conversions were by Robinson, Wall, and C. Bill. What play did you call this??? Where did the ballcarrier go! We won, let's go home, Do you still have the ball???? The Orange, Black and White did everything right and the Indians did everything wrong in a 26- 8 conquest of Mt. Gilead. This gave the 7-0 Cats sole possession of 1st place in the M.O.C. That same night, Marion Catholic had torn Big Walnut's Homecoming game apart beating them 42-14, and putting them to 2nd place with a 4-1 league slate compared to N.U.'s 5-0. Hopes for an eighth straight win vanished at half-time as the Wildcats and the Eagles of Big Walnut dueled at home for the conference crown. The first half was a tug of war with sustained drives, but no scoring for the Cats. Loss of Gary Shaw on injuries further crippled the injury riddled team and the Eagles scored once to lead at half- time. Not until time ran out in the fourth quarter could N.U. score. It was the first defeat of the season, Bruce Charles scored and Wall converted to put N.U. on the short side of a 14-8 score. The Seniors' last game was also their biggest. A victory meant a conference co-championship and a loss meant second place. The Cats were first to light up the score board against arch rival Marion Catholic, and went on to beat the Irish for the first time since 1952. The 32-20 score was similar to that score 17 years ago, 32-13. Scoring for N.U. were Shaw, two touchdowns, Robinson, A. Hamilton, and C. Bill with the two point conversion by Jack Stout. The win gave the Wildcats a 6-1 conference and 8-1 overall record, and a second consecutive co-championship. N.U. ties with Big Walnut for N.O. 1 team! 77 Thanks to the cheerleaders. Where would we be without them to back our great WILDCAT team! Coach, you didn’t have to faint just because Pete scored a touchdown! The roundballers found the road to victory easy as they dumped their first seven opponents. During this seven game spree the Cats netted 555 points while holding the opposition to a mere 426. In- cluded in this win streak was the first conference victory of the year as, the Wild- cats dumped Highland. In the second MOC showdown the Wildcats found themselves outclawed by scrappy Buckeye Valley. In this rough game the Cats saw a 50-49 lead vanish when Buckeye Valley drifted a long jumper through the rim with only seconds remaining. After this bitter defeat the hoop- sters blasted three straight opponents, two of them MOC foes, and were sporting a flashy 10-1 record. The game with Pleasant saw NU fall victim to an upset when the opponents took advantage of the injured Mike Morgan. With the bitter memory of the Pleasant game fresh in their minds the Wildcats slashed their way to a dynamic 81-47 win over Mt. Gilead. Boosting a 4-1 MOC record the Cats invaded league leading Buckeye Valley. The Eagles were flying high that night as they skinned the Cats 71-59. Freshman Basketball Team: D. Elliot, F. Taylor, J. Griffith, W. Apt, L. Manville, R. Evans, D. §omerlot, R. Hall, S. Gray, J. Cramer, S. Davis, and Coach Dennis Rudd. 83 Perhaps the most exciting game of the season was the night North Union took on Marion Catholic. To the great delight of the NU fans the Wildcats snatched a victory from the luckless Irish. It was a rough night for the big guns as the league's third leading scorer, A1 Van Winkle, was held to eleven points and the fifth leading scorer, Tobin, tallied only four. North Union owes part of their victory to Craig Allgower as he grabbed off sixteen rebounds. Van Winkle made up for his night at Catholic when the Wildcats took on Triad. The hot-shooting guard poured in 32 points and saved 15 rebounds for his finest game ever. Despite this excellent display of basketball the Wildcats had to settle in a tie with Big Walnut for second place. Buckeye Valley proved too tough as they walked off with their fourth straight conference title. North Union turned in a fine job in the tourna- ment games at Columbus. The Cats outshot Grove- port before falling to a tough Whitehall team, 90 to 78. Thus the 1968-69 season came to a close with North Union displaying an excellent 16 win- 4 loss record. The players and coaches all de- serve much credit for providing NU fans with many exciting minutes of basketball. No one can ever force you to eradicate from your mind what you have learned in school. In industry, as in all walks of life, the fact that you have completed your basic educational program will be a key to your success. It will help you open doors of opportunity. At this time Whirlpool congratulates the graduating seniors for com- pleting their high school education. At the same time this growing industry urges all undergraduates to remain in school despite the de- sire to get a job. You will have the rest of your life to make a living.
