✓ '4 + L CAT TAV£S This year, the Senior class of 1967 has voted to dedicate its high school yearbook to Mrs. Mary Cahill. Mrs. Cahill, our mother away from home, has brought new light upon her subjects— American history and English 12—and has made our high school years more bearable and en- joyable. In her own artistic way, she has brightened up our Junior-Senior proms, to give us mem- ories we aren't likely to forget. And so, we wish to say Congratulations, to one of the best- loved teachers at North Union. TABLE OF CONTENTS FACULTY - 6 SENIORS - 11 UNDERCLASSMEN - 29 SPORTS - 51 CLUBS, ORGANIZATIONS, ACTIVITIES - 73 DEPARTMENTS - 91 ADVERTISING - 105 A school annual should be a record of the activities and achievements of the students. However, a school serves as a laboratory for many facets of life and only a few of the highlights can be presented in a year book. I wish to compliment the many students who through their activities have worked to make the North Union High School a cohesive unit. Unity is easier each year as the students spend more time together. Everyone is now looking forward to the completion of the new building and participation in the improved and expanded programs. I also wish to thank the staff of Cat Tales for their work in assembling the highlights of 1966-67 and for this opportunity to communicate briefly with friends of the North Union Schools. Sincerely, R. D. Fetter, Superintendent The Class of '67 has come to the end of its school days, but its education will never be finished. Under the impact of the current explosion of knowledge, the old world is giving way, and there is no real blue-print for the new. Especially in the areas of vocation, family living, and human freedoms will you need continuously to develop skills and rationales and values which will enable you to live and compete successfully in the new world. We of your school too are looking forward to progress and change as we face the educational challenge of the latter 20th Century. Sincerely, C W. D. Cochran, Principal a On Tuesday morning, September 6, 1966, nine teachers and I greeted an eager group of one hundred and fifty freshman stu- dents to the Byhalia building. Stepping into their new and different educational situation, this immature and unsure group quickly adjusted and grew both educationally and physically until they will have attained the status of Sophomores on June 2, 1967. Several of the class members have emerged to prominence in the fields of scholarship, musical accomplishments, and athletic endeavors. Honors go to the members of the District Scholarship team. Honors go to those who represented our school in the District Music contest and received high ratings. Honors go to our athletic teams which were undefeated in football and only twice defeated in basketball, and were strong in track, baseball and cross country. It takes a well-balanced mixture of the above to create pride in one's school, this Freshman class has achieved this mixture to a certain degree; with determination to do even better in their remaining high school years. This could be just the beginning of some very excellent things to come for North Union High School. We strive to improve student-teacher relations! JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS One hundred and seven Juniors of the class of 1968 began their chief task of raising funds for the Junior-Senior Prom Banquet held in the following spring. Some of the projects which we undertook were: Selling window cleaner, selling refresh- ments at home basketball games, two bake sales, a dance featuring the Intruders from Columbus, and an all-day car wash. These projects kept the Juniors busy, but they also got some enjoyment out of it. The year was climaxed by the Junior-Senior Prom. It was held at the Marion Country Club and the theme was California Nights. Although this year was filled with responsibilities, the Juniors also gained experience, pride, and friendship. Not only did we Juniors earn money for the Prom, but we also added a little something to our character. Next year is still a dream, but many Juniors have thoughts about our Senior year. Some are eager to graduate while others long to linger in the halls of good old North Union. Each of us has a year to write the end to our high school careers, but what those pages will record is yet unknown. The best is yet to come. 30 Barb Baker Leo Baker Roxanne Ballinger Gary Beery Barb Benton Carol Blain Nannette Blue Barb Boggs Beth Boggs Linda Brown Margo Christian Nancy Cleland Billie Davis Sue Davis Gail DeGood Carolyn Dilger Jim Eastman Peg Eastman Cyndi Elliott Roger Evans Harlie Ferguson John Fillinger Kathy Foreman Paul Fout John Frasure A1 Glann Gary Glass 32 Connie Godwin Kathy Goins Russ Goodwin Bob Gray Lester Grose Duane Gruber Sandy Hall Jan Hamilton Jim Hamilton Kathy Hamilton Ken Hamilton Bill Hamilton Wayne Hamilton Sue Hanby Bob Haughn Candy Hester Pat Jividen Bob Jolliff Don Jolliff Carolyn Kavanagh Don Kavanagh Merle Kelly Linda Krebehenne Steve Leibold Dottie LeMaster Donna Lester Dave Lewis Linda Lytle Colleen Mannasmith Bob Maxwell Dale McBride Bill McCarty Gary Meddles Rob Miller Jeff Miller Sonnie Miller Steven Minter Randy Moore Marsha Mowery Mary Jo Mowery Jacque Mueck Linda Nauman Bob Oman Mike Orcena Janet Overly Mike Phelps Bev Phipps Brenda Phipps Deb Poland Breht Rader Tom Reynolds Barb Ridge Janet Ridge Don Ridgeway Jody Roberts Larry Robinson Jane Russell 3 a Sheila Schambs Frank Schamblin Paul Sivey Phil Stidham Diana Stinemetz Jeff Swartz Kimm Tallman Gary Tanner Katie Taylor Pat Thommasson Charlie Wall Paul Warye Sue Waugh Karen Wheeler Ruth Whipple Bob Williams Doug Wilson Barb Woodruff Janice Wright Ed Wygal Sam Yoakum Jim Holcomb-Vice-President, Jodi Ballard-Student Council, Cindi Davis-Secretary-Treasurer, Craig Allgower-President. The following officers were elected: Donna Gibson, president; Mike Beery, vice-president; Vicki Poland, secretary; and Tracy Drake, treasurer. The main project of the class was a candy sale before Christmas. A great honor for the class was the fact that their football team was undefeated. Their basketball team didn't do badly either with a record of 10-3 for the season. Plans were formulated for a class picnic at the close of the school year. GRIDIRON RECORD 6-3 WORDS FROM 1966 FOOTBALL RECORD COACH DRODOFSKY North Union 16 Marysville 6 In future years, now beyond contemplation, North Union 8 Elgin 22 these dusty pages will be reviewed many times. North Union 22 Highland 6 Then the often quoted phrase It is not whether North Union 8 Buckeye Valley 22 you win or lose, but how you play the game North Union 22 Cardington 12 may be more fully appreciated. Let it be said, North Union 34 Olentangy 22 this team played the game. It ran the gauntlet North Union 14 Mt. All the desirable qualities—ability, dedication, desire, and team- work—were present in more than average quantities. The testimony to this is the record. I am proud of every member of the 1966 squad and its accomplishments. It is a distinct pleasure to have had their association. NORTH UNION WILDCATS 67 Are these football players? Alley-oops! Gilead 58 North Union 60 Ridgedale 50 North Union 57 Fredericktown 66 After a very disheartening start with three straight losses, the North Union Wildcat basketball team struggled through the Christmas vacation break with a very inauspicious three won and five lost record. During the second half of the season they were probably one of the better teams in this section of the state, defeating Jonathon Alder, 7th ranked Cardington, Fairbanks, and Marion Catholic while posting an eleven win and six lost record for the season. A fine season was capped off with the Wildcats winning the first two games in the Marion Sectional Tournament before bowing to Fredericktown the eventual Central District Champs. From a coach's point of view, it was very gratifying to be associated with such a fine group of young men and to see them develop into a very capable basketball team. While the loss by graduation of two very excellent captains and exciting ballplayers as Ned Cunningham and Ed Dennis will be felt; the seed of success is maturing and con- tinued good basketball teams will be the rule at North Union High School in years 61 to come. OFFICE STAFF YOUTH POWER ORGANIZATION To stimulate the interest of senior girls in achieving careers in the business and professional world is the purpose of the Youth Power USA Program sponsored by both the State and National Federations of Business and Professional Women's Clubs. This year the Marysville Chapter honored three girls from each high school in the county. These three girls from North Union were chosen by a committee of the National Honor Society on the basis of their cooperation, poise and personality, participation in extra-cirricular activities, scholarship, and determination to pursue a career. I wondered why It left familiar things behind. A hand caught mine...I paid no mind. The tasks I'd done, those left to do, I wondered how I'd make it through; When something inside seemed to say, Do the best you can from day to day. The stranger never once did say Just what had brought him on my way. On we went, and some afraid I wished I hadn't come, but stayed. The way was rough; I knew the score, It never ends...there's always more. But now I know that all in all Each thing in its own place will fall. All the friends that I once knew Took a road named Goodbye, too. There were no two roads just the same. Having walked down Goodbye Lane. I thought of all the happy days, The sad one now just seemed a haze. And in a flash I came to see, How much the past had meant to me. The road went on; we went on, too. And I was sad, for then I knew That never could I be the same, Having walked down Goodbye Lane. We walked along—I wondered where The future led and what was there. The past still echoed from behind. I was its and it was mine. And though I couldn't understand. We walked together hand in hand. We said no words, but just walked on, I thought of things now past and gone. But in my heart was still a fear, And in my eye a shining tear; Yet on my face there was a smile. And we walked forward all the while. I thought of games I'd lost and won. I thought of all the things I'd done. I thought of those I loved and cared. Of times we'd had, and things we'd shared. I walked along the road Goodbye, I looked back once...I heaved a sigh. Then I remembered at my side— My silent, but constant guide. I thought of those I'd come to know. Just knowing them—they'd helped me so. I thought of things, of tears, I'd shed... Those things, now, brought smiles instead. The strangers hand I felt in mine. I looked into his face this time. I asked his name—he turned just so. He smiled and said, I'm called Hello.
