OUR WORK - OUR PLAY -- OUR FRIENDS THESE are the happy, carefree daysg nightwork, tests, books, variety review shows, skating parties, dances, basketball, football, and baseball games. Remember the proud feeling inside you when the band played our Alma Mater at the football games? Remember, also, the way you cheered when the Rams scored the winning touch- down or won the basketball game? How could you forget that sudden tired feeling that came over you just when your teacher gave a big assignment for the next day? All of there are a part of your school life. Fun, weren't they? Through this book you will be able to make these school days seem real once again. IUNIOR HISTORY BRIGHT DAY 5 OUR GUIDING HAND IN OUR LAST FOUR YEARS We, the graduating class of 1955 of North Union High School, dedicate this, our yearbook. to Mary Jo Reagan. Miss Reagan, a teacher in the Commercial department, has accomplished a great deal here at North Union by building up the commercial department into one of the district's finest. Her main objective is to send out into the business world secretaries and office workers of whom North Union can be proud. Because of the knowledge and skill with which she does her work. her classes have become more active and interesting. Anyone who has had the opportunity of work- ing with Miss Reagan will remember her for her sincerity. friendliness, and willingness to lend a helping hand at all times. It is with a great deal of pleasure, respect, and gratitude that we, the senior class, dedicate this hook to Miss Reagan, our friend and teacher. O MISS MARY JOAN REAGAN ' TEACHING TYPING . . ' . . . THE OF YOUR SCHOOL YEAR IN 55 RAYMOND E. CRAWFORD Yearbook Adviser Your yearbook staff has attempted to show by picture and tell in words as much as possible of the happenings of the 1954-55 school year. We realize that it is impossible to completely cover a year's events in a book of this size, so we hope that you will forgive us if we missed something which to you is a fond memory of school life. In our efforts to put into print something which will serve as a reminder of our happiest days, we have covered most of the events of the school year. Our year has been somewhat disrupted by the building program, so our usual club organizations have been curtailed. This has given the staff an op- portunity to expand the sports section as well as to increase the number of pages devoted to the under- classmen. One of the aims of the staff is to have every stu- dent included at least once in the yearbook, and, with the exception of a few freshmen who were absent when pictures were taken and some recent entrants, we have done sog thus the yearbook holds something of interest for everyone. Because of the large size of the yearbook staff, no member was burdened with work so we can truly say that this has been a pleasant experience. We hope you enjoy your book. 7 MR. Their duties consist of administering and supervising all the school affairs of the dis- trict. In no year during the various tenures of of- fice of these representatives of the district have more demands on their time and efforts been made. The current building program alone has proved to be filled with many problems neces- sitating countless meetings, to say nothing of the time required by the regular business of the school. With the broadening of the curriculum and expansion of educational facilities our adminis- trators must be complimented for their efforts in keeping North Union abreast of the trends of the time. 10 MIR1. MARTIN WILLIAM LULICH President WILLIAM E. MILLER Treasurer IOHN CINDRIC CNot pictured? HARRY E. DAVIDSON Business Manager B. S.. California State Teachers College: M. Ed., University of Pittsburgh. ADMINISTRATION Opportunities for youth in this country have never been preempted. There is no saturation point in opportunities and they will be seized by those who are prepared to seize them . . . those whose thinking and attitudes are opti- mistic and constructiveg and they will be made the most of by those who are willing to pay the price and make the sacrifices which all true success demands. We hope that we have, in some measure, con- tributed to those ideals and attitudes which tend to make better and happier citizens. You are now somewhat like a minor league baseball player at bat for the first time in the major leagues. Your parents and teachers, like a minor league manager, have attempted to train and teach you various fundamentals. You must now call upon that training if success is going to be yours. It is our wish that you will get those base hits which will win the various games in life. My sincere congratulations and warmest re- gards. William J. Students of North Union look forward to their junior year under the leadership of Mr. Harry Wilson as a highlight of their high school career. One of the big days of this year was the day we received our rings. Another was the most successful skating party of the year. These are but two of many memorable occasions. We are watching the new construction anxiously, hoping to be the first class to have graduation exercises in our gymna- sium. lik ww 2 , :ii . Margaret Crossland, Kenneth One more step on the stairs of school life has brought us to the level called sophomore, We look back with a feel- ing of pride in accomplishment, but with a feeling of regret in the past pleasant events of our first nine years of school. We realize that we must now start to concentrate on preparation for school life because, as sophomores, we really start on the courses of our choice. We are sorry that some of our number have passed up opportunities to partici- pate in as many activities as possible and we approach our junior year with the thought that with the added facilities due next year, our school life will be broadened considerably. Activities of the Student Council for the past year have been a magazine selling campaign, selling jerseys with North Union emblems on them, keeping the bulletin boards decorated, and the very worthwhile project of distributing baskets to needy families during the Christmas holidays. The Council is under the supervision of Mr. Means, Mr. Wilson, and Mr. Lukotch. STUDENT PATROL The purpose of the Senior Patrol is to main- tain order and keep the traffic in the halls run- ning smoothly. Being seniors, it is also the duty duty of the patrol to set an example in character and social conduct for the underclassmen. The patrolmen are stationed at intervals down the hall and at the busiest intersections within the main hall. Performing these duties, the patrol is one of the most important of the organizations which function to keep our school a good one. Melvin Hall was this year's very capable Cap- tain. Many injuries, including ones which permanently side- lined Jerry Whitman and Don Upole early in the season, coupled with a very difficult schedule resulted in a two won, six lost record. Sandwiched between victories over two of our greatest rivals, Masontown and South Union, were six losses, against German, 25-0, a close one with Ramsay, 12-7, a 26-6 affair with one of the best Dunbar teams in years, a 33-14 loss at Georges, 14-6 with Hurst, and another close one, 7-0, against Bellmar. The highlights from a North Union view were the opening victory over Masontown and the victory for the SUN Trophy against South Union. This was an afternoon game, the first NORTH UNION'S CONTRIBUTION TO FALL'S SCHOLASTIC SPORT STEPHEN FURIN IERHY WHHMAN Captain played locally by a North Union team in years and was thoroughly enjoyed by most of the stu- dent body of both schools. From the viewpoint of the students, this proved to be a popular move by the two schools. Losses through graduation this year will be unusually high. They include Jerry Whitman, who received All-County recognition despite the fact that he missed most of the season due to a leg injury, Max Roseck, who was high scorer for North Union, being the workhorse of the team, Bob Ondrish, accomplished quarterback, Bruce Guesman, kicking specialist, backfield men, Tom Cossick and Ed Pocratsky, and capable linemen, Ray Kovalchick, Bill Oliver, Melvin Hall, and Bob Baird. These boys will be difficult to re- place next year and we wish the coaching staff success in their search for replacements. IUNIOR VARSITY Playing for what is hoped to be the last year on a foreign court, North Union's 1954-1955 basketball team produced some interesting and exciting games during a successful pre-league and a somewhat less successful league campaign. After practicing and playing through two months of the pre-league season, during which they won five and lost two, with Roger Gillum as playmaker, Coach Furin was faced on the day of the first league game with the problem of replacing Gillum, who joined the service. Bob Ondrish, the only senior on the team, was moved to the playmaker spot and Mose Payne replaced him. This combination clicked for victories over Georges and South Union, but a loss at Mason- town seemed to dishearten the team and they ended with a 5 won and 7 lost record. The highlights of the season were a victory over Beth Joint, which later went to the finals of the Class B eliminations, two victories over a good St. John's team, a one-point victory over Georges in the first league game, followed by a thrilling win over South Union, a tough loss to Point Marion after coming from fourteen points behind to go into the lead in the last minute, a loss to German despite Phil Zoretic's twenty- seven pointsg an overtime loss at German in the last league gameg and finally, our usual good game against Uniontown in the Coaches' Tour- nament, which we again lost by two points. Four tall experienced players will be eligible for next year: Phil Zoretic, who scored 345 points this yearg Frank Turpin Q257jg Joe Craig C232jg and Mose Payne, who started in nine games this year. The only loss by graduation from this year's team is Bob Ondrish, who made up for his lack of height, compared to the other boys, by his aggressive heads-up play all year. Ronald Gillum also will be missing, having moved from the district. All North Union is looking forward eagerly to a good start in our new gymnasium. . L 'Q , . ! This red and white marching group along with the band provides the entertainment for the half-time intermission at the football games. Some of the best remembered performances of this year were those honoring the fathers of the members of the football team when the Ramettes and band spelled out the word DAD, and those honoring Pennsylvania Week in which the Key- stone and flag raising ceremony were executed.
