INIHNIHXNN, IINNNWIXA O XVe, the seniors of North Union High School class of 1954, respectfully bring to you a pictorial account of the past year at North Union. This, the last year of school life for most of us, has been a year filled with events which will help shape our lives for years to come. VVe realize and wish to pass on to those who come after us this realization, that school has taught us. and can teach you, to make the most of your capabilities and to take advantage of opportunities that arise. XVe know that our learning is a continuous process which is greatly aided by the fundamentals that we have learned in school and we would like to leave to all the undergraduates, the suggestion that they make full use of the facilities of their school, so that they may come to graduation time knowing that they have gotten the most possible out of school. forewvrd wil DEDICATE IHIS HUHK llllb ulila llYIQXtfHlsIJ Hll IH ,XI NHRIH ITNIHN lu Xllss Slllll. In time. it encompasses almost the entire school year and poses many problms which must be decided by the staff. First in laying out the book. it is the aim of the staff to provide some variety from year to year, yet retain quality. Then a cover must be chosen to correspond, if possible, to the colors of the senior class. The biggest and most difficult job is getting the pictures needed and seeing that all phases of school life are covered. Then comes the writingg identifying people, writing captions, and giving an account of all activities of North Union. Finally the typing and proofreading and the book goes to the printer. This Yearis yearbook staff. with Mr. Crawford as advisor. Roberta Koman- ecky, photography editor. Shirley Harford, literary editor, Joan Cavlick, typing editor, and Donna Blaranto, business editor. hopes that in years to come this 1954 Torch will remind you of the happy years spent at North Union. SAVAGE Supervising Principal B.S. California State Teachers College V M. Ed. Uniyedsity of Pittsburgh There is a famous curye on the Pennsylvania Railroad known as the Horseshoe Curve. Seated in the middle of the train you can look out the window and at same instant see the car at the end of the train and the engine at the head. It might be a good idea for high school student, both undergraduates and seniors. to imagine theinselyes at such a curye in your high school life in order to take a backward look to see what you haye accomplished and a look ahead to see where you are going. It is our desire, as you look backward. that you be filled with many pleasant memories of your high school days. During your years at North Union you have formed many lasting friendships. You have formed definite attitudes about school and about life. You have been given the necessary fundaw mentals upon which to build your future. If you have learned these fundamentals Well you should be able to look around your horseshoe curye and see a land of opportunity and happiness ahead. My warmest regards to a fine student body and congratula- tions to the graduating class. XVilliain J. Means Theresa Sherlock Frances Kezmarsky ,,,.s,,fw--mf THESE . . .THE MEMBERS C-'V' VVILLIAM J. Ricans exani- ining prize winning science exhibits For the fourth year North Unionls Science Fair. a week long exhibit of projects in the science department. was an outstanding success. The open house for parents and friends. featur- ing the exhibits in science and history. yariety shows. and demonstrations in the conunercial and language departments. is an event now looked forward to eagerly by parents and friends. This year the exhibits showed. as before. the results of much study and effort on the part of the students who submitted them. They illus- trated again what can be accomplished by stu- dents when the opportunity and proper incentive is provided for them. The teachers who super- vised the preparation of the exhibits are to be conunended for their leadership. Especially noteworthy. once again. was the success of nieinbers of Nlr. Lukoteh's language department in its prize winning exhibit. a replica of the Circus Maximus. in the Latin Festival in Pittsburgh. The boys who constructed the ex- hibit, Charles Gardner. Francis Soxnian. and Richard Chalfant. are to be congratuated for their efforts. XYe at North Union are justly proud of the success of these fairs and trust that they will continue to grow in the future. 70 A A 5 3- ff zu ' 9:17 f f! The first game of the Year against Nlasontown showed North Union running up and down the field at will but being unable to score while Xlasontown was scoring once. This disheartening loss plus the fact that German had a very good team helped contribute to an avalanche of touch- downs tbe following week at German. The first victory of the year was chalked up against Ram- seyg then came the game of the year. A heavily favored Dunbar team was beaten 14 to 12 in what was considered the biggest upset of the year in the county. In one of the better games of the vear. Georges edged North Union T to 6 the following week. Trips the next three weeks. disasterous to the North Union cause. resulted in three lossesg to Hurst. where our offense failed to click because of the lack of an able bodied. experienced quarterbaeltg to Scottdale in a sur- priseg and to Bellmar. This left us with but one game on the schedule. the big one against South Union. Playing for the SUN Trophy, North Union evened matters for last year by winning 19 to 6. JUMP . . .RUN . . . DRIBBLE . 11 With a young team composed of only two seniors, VValter Craig and Albert Kozel, one iunior and seven sophomores, North Union's basketball season which ended in a 7 and 5 league record and an overall record of 11 and 10, was a success and promised much for the future. Once again Coach F urin had a squad with little experience and no home floor on which to both practice and plavg but by using the brief time allotted at the Y.M.C.A. to the fullest ad vantage he was able to turn out a team which improved steadily until the end of the season when it was one of the best in the countv. An eight game pre-league card which end- ed all even was highlighted by a disappointing last quarter, one point loss to Brownsville. Dur- ing the regular league season, with the exception of South Union, the section champ, and a sur- prising loss to Masoutown, the North Union team made a better second game showing against all teams than they did in the first game. The most thrilling games were, an overtime victory against Georges 54 to 57, and a second game victorv over Redstone after having lost the first by 29 points. In the Countv Coaches Tournament, North Union lost to Uniontown 48 to 46 in one of the best played games of the year. North Union must produce its varsity haskethall team from hoys who. for the most part. have had no opportunity to play has- kethall hefore they are freslunan. This means that the junior yarsity is the heginning for the team of the future. Because the varsity was composed largely of sophomores, this year's junior varsity was made up mostly of freshmen and. thanks to the :ooperation of their principals. several seyenth and eighth grade hoys were permitted to prac- tice with the junior varsity this vc ar. XVe hope that this pays off in the future as it has with seyeral of the present varsity who practiced with the j.V.s as grade school students in the past. The student council is comprised of one student from each homeroom. The student rep- resentatives are chosen by the homeroom teach- ers. They are selected according to scholastic standing, artistic ability, and leadership. This organization, designed to make our school a more interesting and enjoyable institu- tion of learning, has many purposes. Each vear the student council conducts the magazine cam- paign. This year the profits were applied to the baud uniforms which were purchased last year under the sponsorship of the Student Council. Other activities sponsored for this purpose were the sale of jerseys with North Union emblems, and a Christmas dance. There are also activities that are non-profit to the council, such as, distributing baskets of food and toys to needy families during the Christmas holidays, and to support another of North Union's credible organizations, The Boost- eris Association, the members distributed booster tickets to the student body to be sold. This organiation is alwavs striving to make our high school a Well coordinated productive institution. 614164 The typical girl or boy elects a balanced program of extra-curricular activities. In the search for his natural occupation he covers a broad field, which, in itself, widens his scope and rounds out his personality. This year at North Union has been an active one in connection with clubs. Many worthwhile activities have been carried out by enthusiastic members and sponsors. The period between 10:15 to 11:00 offers unlimited opportunities for the student to become better acquainted with other friends besides those he sees in class day after day. These friendships are lasting mainly because in that club spirit prevails the spirit of partnership in an adventure worthwhile to all who are interested enough to co-operate. The members are a team pulling together with their main goal as making their club the most out- standing and popular in the whole school. XVith the ringing of the bell for club period comes the anticipation of making plans for field trips, square-dancing, discussing problems of the United Nations, parties, and making worthwhile projects. The teachers are constantly endeavor- ing to develop the special interests and hobbies of the clubis members. Not only do clubs add variety to school life but they are the key to better living and are the standard for learning to live as well as living to learn. '41 r H I Y s ff. A v l ff. X gn I' :gg-V !
