HISTORY OF VILLAGE OF NORTH SYRACUSE As the name, North Syracuse, indicates, it is the first village north of the city of Syracuse and is situated on the improved highway on the direct road to the north country. In 1812 by an act of the Legislature, this highway was authorized to be opened for travel and was called the Salt Road. On April 12, 1844, the road was taken over by the Salina and Central Square Plank Road Company. This was the first Plank Road in the United States and was 16172 miles long. At the time of the opening of the new road in 1846, the settlement was named Centerville, but the Post Office was called Plank Road in honor of the new and novel highway iust completed. They retained these names until 1880 when, at the request of public spirited citizens, the Postmaster General granted a change to its present name of North Syracuse. The Onondaga Directory of 1867 through 1869 states that Centerville, situated in the eastern part of the Town of Clay, contains two churches, one school, a steam sawmill, and about sixty houses. There were also some stores, blacksmith shops, and two taverns. The taverns were the stopping places for hundreds of teams loaded with salt barrels for the north country. In 1907, the old stage coach, which had carried mail for many years, had been re- placed bythe Syracuse and South Bay Trolley line. Since 1947, great changes have taken place. The community is now the headquarters for the largest centralized school district in the state of New York and in 1955 the largest centralized high school was built. A Municipal Building has been built, and the com- munity now includes seven different churches. A great many homes and streets have been added to the village making it one of the fastest growing communities in the United States. You have chosen a mighty fine community in which to live, Join hands and take part in all its problems and activities-you will be repaid one hundred times over. NORTH SYRACUSE FREE LIBRARY Seated: J.
