SPORTS REVIEW With the moving to the new High School last Fall there was a great increase in the nu'riber of students participating in the recreational and athletic program. Athletics are governed by the Athletic Council which is the Executive Committee of the Athletic Association. The High light of the athletic season is the Block Letter Banquet held in June when awards are given to both the girl and boy athletes. The past year Floyd Schwartzwalder was the principal speaker and Jack Vollick won the Thornton Memorial Trophy presented to the outstanding athlete of the year. Charles Burkett won the trophy for athletic leadership and Miss Diane Shetrow won the girls' trophy as the outstanding girl athlete. The girls' activities consist of softball, archery, spring and fall, basketball, bowling, soccer, tennis and volleyball. Miss Evelyn Tucker, Mrs. Jeanne Morin, Mrs. Evelyn White and Mrs. Mary 'Nhipple directed the girls' activities. Miss Carol Katzung sponsored the Cheerleaders. The girls' activities are limited to intramurals, play days and invitation games. However, numerous games in the different sports were held with the various schools in the County :nlus the Central New York Archery tournament and the Junior WIBC Bowling League, The boys participate in the Onondaga County League in football, basketball, baseball, track, cross- country, golf, bowling and volleyball, The l955 baseball team won lo games, lost none and won the County Championsh p. Baseball was coached by Mr. Hall. The Junior Varsity baseball team won 9 and lost l and tied Solvay and Baldwins- ville for the Junior Varsity Championship. The Junior Varsity Team was coached by 'Vtr. Tucci. Mr. Raulli's golf team won 6 and lost 2 matches to finish second in the County players. Mr. Nugent's track team won 2, lost 4 dual meets and finished fifth in the County League standing. Jim Curtis won the Section lll class A mile run and in the inter-sectional meet finished l2th among TOO boys participating. Soccer was added to the Fall sports for the first time this year and the team competed rw the Onondaga County League. The team was coached by Mr. Robert Bell. Cross Country was :oached by Mr. Knieser and the team participated in five meets plus the Sectional Meet, William Carson and William Baumler finished in the first ten in the sectionals and competed in the inter-sectional meet at Bear Mountain, The Varsity football team tied for the County Championship with a record of 6 victories and l defeat. The players were divided in three separate squads, varsity, junior varsity and freshmen, There were 75 boys participating. Mr. Hall was head coach, assisted by Mr. Nugent and Mr, Wegerski, while Mr. Tucci and Mr. Herlosky coached the Junior Varsity and Mr, Covey the Freshmen, All th'ee squads had a successful season and the prospects are bright for T957 as only four boys are lost through graduation. Wrestling started this winter for the first time with 35 boys reporting to Mr. Knieser Wrestling this year is on an informal basis and an intramural tournament will be held at the end of the season. For the first time, in the spring of T955 North Syracuse competed in the Section lll Winter Carnival. The Bowling team, gymnastic team, volleyball team, badminton and table tennis teams competed. Mr. Covey taught gymnastics, Mr. Reagan and Mr. Warner had charge of volleyball, badminton and table tennis and Mr. Nugent bowling. With new facilities the gymnastic team has shown great improvement. The T956 basketball team shows a record of seven victories and four defeats. The team has scored victories over Central Square, Fayetteville Manlius, East Syracuse, Solvay, Liverpool and West Genesee. Due to Mr. Wegerski's illness Mr. Tucci took charge of the Varsity and Mr. Fogarty the Junior Varsity, while Mr. Herlosky coached the Freshmen, All three squads are playing a schedule in the County League, Uamsawlnn
