HISTORY OF VILLAGE OF NORTH SYRACUSE As the name, North Syracuse, indicates, it is the first village north of the city of Syracuse and is situated on the improved highway on the direct road to the north country. In 1812 by an act of the Legislature, this highway was authorized to be opened for travel and was called the Salt Road. On April 12, 1844, the road was taken over by the Salina and Central Square Plank Road Company. This was the first Plank Road in the United States and was 16172 miles long. At the time of the opening of the new road in 1846, the settlement was named Centerville, but the Post Office was called Plank Road in honor of the new and novel highway iust completed. They retained these names until 1880 when, at the request of public spirited citizens, the Postmaster General granted a change to its present name of North Syracuse. The Onondaga Directory of 1867 through 1869 states that Centerville, situated in the eastern part of the Town of Clay, contains two churches, one school, a steam sawmill, and about sixty houses. There were also some stores, blacksmith shops, and two taverns. The taverns were the stopping places for hundreds of teams loaded with salt barrels for the north country. In 1907, the old stage coach, which had carried mail for many years, had been re- placed bythe Syracuse and South Bay Trolley line. Since 1947, great changes have taken place. The community is now the headquarters for the largest centralized school district in the state of New York and in 1955 the largest centralized high school was built. A Municipal Building has been built, and the com- munity now includes seven different churches. A great many homes and streets have been added to the village making it one of the fastest growing communities in the United States. You have chosen a mighty fine community in which to live, Join hands and take part in all its problems and activities-you will be repaid one hundred times over. NORTH SYRACUSE FREE LIBRARY Seated: J. '- , . ' ., in cf ,ii ff'-- ii..f,,-in-:fi COMMUNITY AMBASSADOR PROGRAM Community Ambassador Proiect! Fine we're all for it! But where do we begin? Will our community give both financial and moral support to it? These questions arose in the minds of adults enrolled in the Adult Education Class of 1953. Their idea had begun taking shape when they heard of the Student Exchange Program and wondered why a similar plan could not be undertaken for the next age group. After looking into this suggestion more closely, the adults were referred to the Experiment in International Living in Putney, Vermont. This began a community-wide project. The requirements for becoming an ambassador begin with the most-an interest in international affairs and the growth of democracy. Secondly one must be a high school graduate and between the ages of eighteen and thirty. Because it will be necessary to deliver talks and show pictures of his or her trip, the ambassador must be available to the community for a period of six months to a year and a resident of the North Syracuse School District. For convenience, a board of interested villagers is chosen to interview the applicants. To become better acquainted with the young people the board holds an informal tea. From this group the board selects several applicants and these are sent to Putney, Vermont, listing the qualifications of each young adult. The choice of the Experiment in International Living is returned to North Syracuse and the final vote is taken by the board, Only the best success has accompanied the Community Ambassador Proiect so far. All such results are due only to the deep interest taken by our community, one of which we may be iustly proud. The class of '56 extends their sincerest wishes and hopes the Ambassador Program will become a custom of our community carried out each year. Miss Hess, Ambassador, Mrs. Taylor, Committee, Mrs, Richards, Committee, Mr Richards. GREETINGS FROM MAURICE S. HAMMOND The first senior class in our new High School has the distinct privilege of establishing customs which will affect all future classes. We should try to reflect a spirit of thankfulness for the beauti- ful building which has been provided for us. I am sure everyone will try to keep it as nice as we should for many years to come. We suspect that most of the students will spend their adult life in this area. Therefore, this senior class may look forward to much happiness in a community which has been founded on a positive philosophy of life. The Class of '56 has been one more which he has guided and helped through this happy but difficult time in our lives. Mr. Robbins has shared each experience with us and has been not only our principal but our friend. The Class of '56 is happy to have this opportunity to acknowl- edge our gratitude and respect for a man who has served the best interests of education for many years. We would like to extend our best wishes upon his retirement as principal of North Syracuse High School and wish him continuing success in his new post as director of the Adult Education Program. Ths Class of '56 affectionately pays tribute to the memory of a well-loved member of the student body. 1 JS. Higgs: 4 a 7 X 5, m FLORENCE BERNARD-Visitor from Abroad Of all our high school memories, one that shall remain forever in our minds is that fateful day in assembly when Florence said, ln France we have gym classes, not shower classes! Clf you didn't know Flo before that time, you realized then that she was one of us.J Florence Bernard was born in Caulommiers, France, a small Town fifty miles from Paris. The Bernard family is quite close, especially Florence and her sisters, Chautal and Aurele. When they were younger the three girls attended a small school five miles from their home, but now they attend a boarding school in Caulommiers. Florence has taken many difficult courses, which have included Latin, Greek, French, English, chemistry, physics, biology, music and sewing. After talking to Flo none of us should complain about our schedules. Flo attended school in France from 8:30 to 11:30 and again from 1:30 to 4:30. Beacause of this heavy schedule not many French teenagers have time to work outside of school or to carry on an active social life. Florence has said that colleges in France are very much the same as those in the United States. On completion of her high school years, Flo hopes to attend Faculte de Lettres where she will maior in foreign lan- guages. ln the lunchroom, we seldom see Flo eating ice cream! It isn't that she doesn't care for it, on the contrary, she loves it! However, when Flo arrived in the U.S., she could never get enough of it. As a result the inevitable happened. Ice cream is now viewed with a somewhat iaun- diced eye. And in all Flo has enioyed the time spent here with us. We, in turn, have gained a great deal having her here, not only because she is friendly and sweet, but also because we are playing a part in interna- tional friendship. We shall never forget Flo, our friend from France. LSL :gf 524, Mosf Versatile Mos? The community was honored by the presence of the United States Commissioner of Education, Dr. Samuel Miller Brownell, guest speaker for the evening. Members of the Board of Education, administrators and faculty of our school, our representatives from abroad, and those who had a part in the establishment of the new Junior-Senior High School assembled for the solemn but colorful ceremony. The dedication was a truly historic event, one at which was shown a marvelous display of teamwork, an outstanding characteristic of the North Syracuse Central School System.
