E pr'-'sa lg- p E ,Tiff fs-me 1 I EK 1 As the Fall of 1950 arrived, we found ourselves at the doorstep of our high school career. Armed with piles of books and our new elevator-tickets, we prepared to ioin the long awaited ranks of the high school crowd. Filled with visions of graduating from the new high school-to-be, we and our new found friends put our best foot forward to impress the mighty seniors. As sophomores, we left our freshmen timidity to take on the traditional sophomore-know-it-all air. In September of 52 the down of our iunior year broke upon us. The first thing that we did in our iunior year was to elect officers. We decided on a very capable four: President, Jerry Loughlin, Vice- President, Pete Tortorello, Secretary, Renwick Va- rone, Treasurer, Frances Demore. Our loyal class advisors, Mr. MacKenzie and Mr. Goessling, are the two people to whom we owe so much of our success during our iunior and senior years. Highlighting our iunior year were the ever present pie sales, dances-and our new contribution to the upperclassmen's money making schemes, the Christ- mas Tree Sale. On the social side, we took part in our first Junior-Senior Christmas Party. Climaxing our iunior year was the Star Light lnterlude, our Junior Prom. Marilyn Fuller and Dick Brown reigned as Queen and King. Seniors at last ! ! ! We had finally reached the pinnacle of our high school years. To lead us through our last year as North Syracuse Northmen we chose the following officers: President, Dick fi In Weil Always Forward - The Class History Brown, Vice-President, Renwick Varonep Secretary, Barb Williams, Treasurer, Mary Falasco. With high hopes and an abundant supply of en- thusiasm we tackled our first proiect of the year-a successful senior dance. From then it was - rush, rush, rush-paper drives, more dances, bake sales, and magazine sales, this the biggest money-making proiect of the year. Next we turned our talents to the Yearbook Assembly-The Follies of 54. Later we had the traditional senior activities-the supper, the play, and the assembly. As a fitting farewell to our senior year we held our Senior Ball in a splendor unsurpassed by past classes. Although we have been unable to achieve our freshman dream of graduation from the new high school, we leave now with the assurance that the fulfillment of our dream will be attained by some future class. Now that our days in North Syracuse are finished, we look back with gratitude to Mr. MacKenzie and Mr. Goessling, our advisors. lt was they who lead us through the trying times and who never complained as they gave up precious spare time in their busy lives to help us as a class. As our class marches Always Forward through life, we hope to repay them in some way, if only in satisfaction with what we have done with our lives, we of the class of u54.ll Respectfully submitted, Gerry Kavanaugh Mary Ellen Kissel Class Historians l has as . K, ., .,-b if K ,, My SPORTS REVIEW Recreation and athletics at the North Syracuse Junoir Senior High School are under the direction of Mr. Archie Hall, assisted by a coaching staff of Mr. John Wegerski, Mr. Ruben Tucci, Mr. William Covey, Mr. Kendall MacKenzie, Mr. John Herlosky, Mr. John Nugent, Mr. Roland lvers, Mr. George Schaertel, Miss Evelyn Tucker, Miss Evelyn Good, Mrs. Mary Whipple, and Miss Marianne Noldan. Athletics are governed by the Athletic Council which is the executive committee of the Athletic As- sociation. Highlighting the athletic season is the Block Letter Banquet usually held in June, when awards are given to the athletes. The Thornton Memorial Trophy is also presented to the outstand- ing athlete of the year at this banquet. Girls' activities this year included archery, bowl- ing, softball, tennis, soccer, basketball, and volley- ball. These activities are limited to intramurals, playdays, and invitation games. Under the direction of Miss Tucker, archery, con- ducted in the spring and fall, is climaxed by a Cen- tral New York tournament held at Liverpool. Miss Good has charge of soccer in the fall and softball in the spring. The girls have a strong intramural bowling league sanctioned by the Junior W.l.B.C. and sponsored by Mrs. Starr and Mrs. Whipple. As the national W.I.B.C. tournament will be held in Syracuse this year, the girls expect to have several booster teams entered in the tournament. The girls' winter program includes the girls vol- leyball group under the direction of Miss Tucker. They participated in several invitation games this winter. At the present time over fifty girls are prac- ticing basketball at Pitcher Hill under Miss Noldan's supervision. This spring, in addition to softball and archery, the girls will participate in tennis, which will be directed by Mrs. Whipple. The boys participated in the Onondaga County League competition of football, basketball, base- ball, track, cross country, golf, tennis, hockey, and bowling. Last year the baseball team finished in a tie with Solvay for third place in the County League. The Junior Varsity and freshman teams also played a complete schedule. Prospects are much brighter for the 1954 season as only three members of the squad were lost because of graduation. The coaching staff for baseball consists of A. D. Hall, John Wegerski, Ruben Tucci, and William Covey. The golf team, coached by Kendall MacKenzie, finished second in the County League, winning six matches and losing two. The tennis team, coached by John Herlosky, finished in a tie for first place in the legue, but in the play-offs lost to Liverpool 3-2. The track team, coached by John Nugent, par- ticipated in several dual meets and the county meet. This fall, a cross country team, coached by Roland lvers, was added to the list of interscholastic sports. The team did very well, engaging in several meets throughout the season. At the Section Ill meet held at Utica, the team finished second. The fooball squad had only four lettermen held over from 1952. The squad of over eighty boys was divided into three groups: Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Freshman. Mr. Hall was head coach, Mr. Weg- erski, and Mr. MacKenzie, line coaches, Mr. Nugent, back field coach, Mr. Tucci and Mr. Herlosky, J.V. coaches and Mr. Covey and Mr. Schaertel, freshman coaches. The Varsity squad wound up their season with a 4-l record in league competition, suffering their only defeat at the hands of Fayeteville-Manlius. This record allowed the Northmen to tie with Solvay for the co-championship of the league. The J.V.'s also had a successful season, finishing their action with a record of two victories, one scoreless tie, and one defeat. The freshmen team, composed of afternoon stu- dents, played one game. Hockey was revived at North Syracuse this year. The team, coached by Mr. Ken MacKenzie, played its games at the War Memorial. As the season closed, the teams record stood at two victories, two defeats, and two ties. The final playoff game with Valley ended in a 2-2 deadlock. This decision allow- ed North Syracuse and Onondaga Valley to share the hockey co-championship of Onondaga County. The basketball team, coached by Mr. Wegerski, had a splendid season. ln league competition they rolled up an impressive record of nine victories and one defeat, which was suffered at the hands of Fayetteville-Manlius. This record enabled the North- men to rein as co-champions with Fayetteville-Man- lius in the Central Division of the Onondaga County League. The J.V.'s, coached by Mr. Tucci, also had a suc- cessful season. Their non-league competition includ- ed two victories. ln league competition they wound up the season with a record of eight victories and two defeats. The freshmen, coached by Mr. Herlosky, practices at the Pitcher Hill gym. At the present time they support a 4-2 record. The bowling team, under the direction of Mr. Nugent, has been organized in an intra-mural league, which is sponsored by the American Junior Bowling Congress. Last year the five man team won the Onondaga County League championship and finished second in the state sectionals. As the 1953-54 athletic program draws to a close at North Syracuse, the Northmen rightly can be proud of themselves. A capable coaching staff com- bined with an enthusiastic school spirit has made it possible for North Syracuse to cop co-champion- ships in football, basketball, and hockey. We salute this year's athletes who have demon- strated outstanding skill and sportsmanship in com- petitive sports. FOOTBALL V3 Row 1. W. Parone, manager, R. Blockburn, E. Briggs, R. Schader, R. May all your friendships be as pleasant as those formed in high school. C. R. Robbins ln 1950 l became a teacher of general science in the North Syracuse Central School. Daily l met with six classes of freshmen, you people, the class of 1954. These past four years have sped by much too rapidly for me to accomplish all of the goals that I had set. Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity to convey to you seniors some of my more serious thoughts and ideas for you to reflect upon as you leave your high school days behind to set forth upon a more complicated way of life. Have faith in God and faith in yourselves. Have the courage of your convictions, but keep an open mind and be the first to admit your error. Give much thought and energy to the direction of your life, make it one of purpose, for the pur- poseful Iife is the only life worth living. Have a sense of humor-life is much easier with than without. Remember, happiness is not as much a matter of position as it is of disposition. With these few thoughts I will say good-bye. I have enioyed working with you, the class of '54, and wish each and every one of you much success and happiness in the years to come. Ken MacKenzie Shall I shout Goodbye to each of you as I've had to do in many of our class meetings? No, I don't want to shout it, I don't even want to say it at all. l'm glad you've reached this part of your active, carefree life and l'll miss you. I have lots of memor- ies of you as individuals, and as a class in our various activities. But I won't say Goodbye be- 148 cause l'll see you, perhaps at an alumni affair, or a game, or on a weekend or vacation visit, or just around. Good luck! John Goessling Another four years have passed and I can say that I sincerely have enioyed them. I would like to wish the class of 1954 the best of everything in their future endeavors. John P. Wegerski Graduation is the last page of the first book of your life. The title of this book is preparation. The title of the second book is meditation. Faced with the problems of life you will question and try to find an answer for yourself alone. The third and final book is entitled dedication. To this end you labor, and are known. Roland lvers These few weeks of friendship make it hard to say goodbye. But for the many pleasures and prob- lems you have shared with me, l reluctantly say fare- well to the class of '54, with a ioy in knowing that your enthusiasm and spirit will continue to dwell at North Syracuse for years to come. Robert Gauthier I believe that ours is a purposeful existence, that each of us has something to contribute to the phy- sical, mental and spiritual well-being of all, and therefore that satisfaction and contentment will come to each of us who works honestly and ethically to fulfill his purpose. Hugo Pinti Good luck friends and keep in mind what Con- fucious said, When prosperity comes do not use all of it. Peter Scholl FAREWELLS Be popular! Thoughtfulness for others is the basis for popularity. The good sport is a person who does not strive for personal glory but forgets him- self in helping others enioy themselves through better play and work. Anyone who forgets himself in helping others will find friends and happiness all along the way. John Antes Commencement time will soon be here You'll leave behind all that's been dear And though you've heard all this before I want to say it iust once more . Success in life will all depend On dealings with your fellow men Your self control and loyalty Will make you what you hope to be. Dependability it's true Helps in what you want to do Society expects of you All these things, and others, too. If you'll live honestly each day Cooperate in every way Consider others as they are You'll succeed, says Betty Starr. I believe that I can honestly say. I have enioyed the seniors I have had in class. Good luck and best wishes to each senior. Esther Sleeth Best wishes for the future of the class of '54, May all your undertakings be as this yearbook. Mary Jane Gates Now the world is yours. We of the faculty offer you to the world and hope that in our little way we have helped in preparing you for whatever the world has to offer. While in high school your roots were developing -now plant them wisely upon the fertile fields of success. Mike Cortese Spring is here- The grass has rizf I wonder where the Seniors is? They're graduates - on the grass alas! They've served their time In this scholastic clime. They decked the halls- They were so iollyl They mixed lots of fun- With a little folly. Now-you can sigh With relief-l'll be brief: We bid them goodbye And good luck. Carol Katzung I would like to wish the very best of luck and success to the class of '54. l'll certainly miss those forlorn, sleepy faces in the office every morning after the last bell has rung. Barbara Horton To the class of '54 Whom I will see no more In the class room or hall At the Prom or Senior Ball To you all I wish success And I mean it, I must confess.
