‘Bound for Excellence’ It was the best season in the school’s history. Practices were seven days a week, but for more than the usual twelve week season. The practices were for two, three, and even four years. This described the 1985 boys’ cross country team. Coach Winger had worked hard for the past years to make this team the success that it was. He trained runners through winter into spring and started early for fall practice. Coach Winger attributed the team’s hugh success of placing sixth in the state to the complete team’s contribution made by every runner. Nicky Embrey’s hard work and determination paid off when he became the best runner in the state. Fellow seniors and teammates David Nicky Embrey relaxes after a hard race. The Boys Cross Country Team gather around a gravestone. They were the first team to beat the Cougar’s on Courtlands home track. Josh Parish concentrates as he finishes his race. Kwiatkowski and Daren Payne were beneficial elements to the team as their four year experience showed. Brian Seiffert, Glenn Seiffert, Billy Schopfel, and Josh Parish completed this team of exceptional runners and will lead the team next season. Coach Winger was confident that next season’s team will enjoy the prosperity that they already have tasted. The only way to describe the 1985 Boys’ Cross Country team was ‘“‘They were bound for excellence.” The girls’ Cross Country team continued the hard work of building their team. As a team the Lady Wolverines fought tough while gaining experience and skill for next season. Freshman Laura Seiffert was already the team’s best runner and will prove to be a leading runner in the state. Cross Country 47
