Four semesters of speech are offered at North which any sophomore, junior or senior may elect. Speech I stresses all forms of oral communications and is de- signed to develop individual and group personalities. Speech 2 offers more ad- vanced forms of oral communication. Speech 3, the dramatics course, presents a general background of the history of the drama and theater and gives an over-all picture of the fields of music, dance, movies, radio, and television. Speech 4 is an advanced continuation of Speech 3. North offers a course in stagecraft which is designed to acguaint students with all phases of stage production. This class is in charge of operating the stage eguipment during assemblies and plays. Students in Mr. Lee ' s speech class seem to enjoy Randy Robert ' s extemporaneous poetry reading. Speech and Dramatics Build Character Learning self expression through drama are Janet Shown. Judy Neuls. and Karen Gater. Speech 3 is primarily plays and skits. 29

Business Classes Mold Future Office Worker Those students wishing to take busi- ness may choose a general, clerical, Working hard with calculators during clerical practice class are Janet Bcckman. Nancy Shriver, and Barb Sampson. stenographical, or business academic course. During general business, pupils study introduction to business, bookkeeping, consumer education, business law, and business organization and management. The clerical business course leads to general office and business machine work, and includes one year of office practice. Those on the stenographic business course, which includes two years of shorthand and typing, are preparing for secretarial and office work. The business academic course in- cludes the academic subjects, bookkeep- ing, shorthand, typing, and any business elective the student wishes. This course enables the pupil to meet college re- guirements, and it gives him an office background. 28

Social Studies Stress Study of Man By offering world history, United States history, civics, economics, and sociology, the social science department gives each student a chance to gain a basic knowl- edge of human relations. Citizenship is also included in this department, but since the freshman will be attending junior highs, this subject will be discon- tinued. Reports and discussions on such topics as Khrushchev ' s visit are conducted by juniors in most U. S. history classes. An understanding of the human being ' s thoughts and feelings is acguired by the seniors in sociology classes. With the use of a chart. Mr. Young shows his economics pupils the operation of a business cycle. Perched on his stool, Mr. Sinks strikes a traditional pose as he directs the pointer toward Carol Markwalter. His question, Who were the blue men? seems to amuse the class although it has Carol completely bewildered. 30
