Scientific Age Arouses Students 9 Interests A squeamish stomach and the odor of formaldehyde are obstacles which must be overcome during the disection of a frog. Making the first incision during his biology 2 class is Stan Moore while James Fretz and Connie Homeyer observe. Adjusting the correct lens for his microscope, Tom Stoeckley prepares to study some algae slides for botany 2. North Side ' s science department en- ables the student to gain a basic under- standing for higher education and living in this scientific world. Physics, botany, physical geography, biology, and chemistry are the main sciences offered in North Side ' s curricu- lum, with an expansion this year into a college research class, chemistry 3. The semester ' s work in this class consists of a laboratory project by each student in the field of his interest. Biology classes are to be discontinued at North Side in the future, as the freshmen will be at- tending junior highs. During their chemistry 3 class, Nancy Gallmeier and Tom Hawk, with the assistance of Mr. Lewis, find the normality of an acid through the average of several titrations. 26

Business Classes Mold Future Office Worker Those students wishing to take busi- ness may choose a general, clerical, Working hard with calculators during clerical practice class are Janet Bcckman. Nancy Shriver, and Barb Sampson. stenographical, or business academic course. During general business, pupils study introduction to business, bookkeeping, consumer education, business law, and business organization and management. The clerical business course leads to general office and business machine work, and includes one year of office practice. Those on the stenographic business course, which includes two years of shorthand and typing, are preparing for secretarial and office work. The business academic course in- cludes the academic subjects, bookkeep- ing, shorthand, typing, and any business elective the student wishes. This course enables the pupil to meet college re- guirements, and it gives him an office background. 28
