Home Arts Build Skilled Workers The industrial arts program, under the supervision of Mr. Smuts, provides the student with a background for industry or for futhering his education in the tech- nical or engineering field. New pur- chases for the department this year in- clude an electric hand saw for the wood shop, and an electric arc welder for the metal IV classes. Putting in a zipper or baking a pie is typical of the work done in the home economics department. The students may develop other domestic skills in sewing, cooking, interior decorating, and home nursing classes. Often, nurses and mothers with babies visit classes to help the students in their study of home nurs- ing and baby care. Working on a project for wood 4 occupies the time ol Bill Daniels and Jerry Fox. Here they are sawing a piece of wood.

New Math Program Proves Successful Mathematics assumes an ever increas- ing role at North Side. This year one of every nine students is enrolled in an advanced mathematics course. To ac- commodate this increasing desire of higher math, this year the department offered a new course and altered an older one. In its initial semester topics in modern math, which is used as a freshman course in many colleges, is offered to students who have already completed eight semesters of math. Solid geometry is combined with some advanced alge- bra as the geometry itself does not merit a full semester of work. Conventional courses, algebra 1 and 2, geometry 1 and 2, trigonometry, and general math re- mained unchanged. After finding the answer to a quadratic equation, Tom Stoeck- ley, with the help of Mr. McNeely. checks his work by graphing the equation during his algebra 5 class. 23
