Mr. Sellars. where are the cuts for The Lariat? Who has the recorder this period? Will you see Mrs. Jones about Johnny's grades?' Sound familiar? All these and our other administrative problems at North Side are under the able, direction of our principal and his two assistants. ERNEST F. SELLARS Principal Without the aid and direction of the members of the North Side faculty, it would have been impossible for the staff to have produced this record of the school year. Therefore, we take this opportunity to thank each of them who has extended a helping hand to us in our endeavors. Millsao beats a retreat, but Moore iust wonders. What is it? ADDINGTON. MRS. BEFORE the crowd caught on to the fact that favorites were really being chosen March 24, ballots came in slowly to pick the outstanding boy and girl from each of the three classes. AFTER the votes began coming in, ballot box tenders had a hard time keeping up with all those who crowded around. In an unusualy heavy vote, the students shown on the following pages came for- ward with a large majority, rating as leaders by way of personality, popularity, and service to North Side. Second Row: George, FOOTBALL in 1947 Coach Snow started the 1947 season with nine returning lettermen from his quarter-finalists team of '46 to bolster chances for another district champion. When the first game was played the starting line-up read George and Cornelius at ends, Hooper and Johnson manning the tackles. Wilson and Davis holding down guard positions, and Captain James Brewer at center. The backfield was composed of Mieth, Lary, Bumgarner, and Dear. Injuries hurt deeply and quickly as the Herd lost Johnson, Bumgarner, Mieth, Lary. before four games had been completed. Poly upset the dope bucket by springing their surprise, Odessa’s de- fending state champs did the expected by turning back the Longhorns in their first contest of the year, and Gladewater and Arlington Heights won hard-fought battles from the, Hill-toppers to put the only mars on their season's record. For their best played game of the year the players picked the Lubbock fray. They simply couldn't do anything wrong in this one and won handily. Perhaps the hardest fought one was when Heights won the district scramble in as exciting a game as one could hope to see. However, all's well that ends well and the Steers were happy as they defeated arch-rival Paschal in the Thanks- giving grudge fight to end the year of football. Mieth. B. Wilson, Dear. Under the guidance of their sponsor. Miss Frances Schober. they served the student body and team, conducting pep rallies twice a week and building up student body spirit with their many peppy and enthusiastic yells and songs. Following the sports calendar, the yell leaders also appeared at the basketball games to lead yells and songs. Many socials and a trip to Gladewater were en- joyed by the group, including the annual Pep Prom, an all-city dance given in honor of all yell leaders in District 7AA. LEADING N CLUB activities are Bob Wilson, Jeannine Rountree, and Homer Dear. CHARLES JOHNSON Captain HERD HOOPSTER5 Distinction of having the tallest team in the district went to Coach Ted Koonce and his hoopsters for the 1947-48 season. They won eight straight games in pre- liminary contests before the district opener and took second place trophy in the Dallas invitation tournament. Captain of the team Charles Johnson, dependables Ronnie McBee, James Brewer, Ray Lowe, and all-district Darrow Hooper were the starting five for the Kooncemen. Add to that group Yale Lary and Pat Holmes, and you have the seven lettermen as announced at the end of the season. Although beaten out in the first round of the double round-robin play, the Steers tied Poly for the second half title which necessitated a play-off. This tilt was sched- uled for the Recration gym and saw the Herd fight a game but losing battle to mark finish to this, the most exciting road traveled by Steer roundballers in a long time. TRACK Record-breaking Darrow Hooper, ace shot putter and discus hurler, led the Steer trackmen through the early part of their 1948 season, cracking records in both events in nearly every meet he attended. He was closely followed by teammate James Brewer in the same two events. Coach L. B. Morris and his thinly clads participated in such early meets as Laredo's Border Olympics, Fort Worth's Southwestern Recreation Track and Field Meet, Brownwood's Bluebonnet Relays, and the Texas Relays held annually at Austin. At the time The Lasso went to press, the team still had Jacksonville’s Tomato Bowl, their own district track meet, and I. Martin clears a high one. 2. In addition, it develops physical fitness, socially desir- able habits, and an attitude of sportsmanship that contributes to the aims of immediate education and later life. Approximately fifty boys turned out for the sport this year, and many good prospects were turned up by the wily hardball mentor, Johnny Pappy Stovall. Undoubtedly the hardest-hitting team in the district and the one with the most returning numeral winners, twelve, the Herd had a good team. Making up the infield were Yates, Lary, Carroll, and King. In the outer garden, the alternating boys were Becan, Dear, Wilson, and Graves. Helm spent time both in the infield and outfield, while Mulholland and Muffett handled pitching chores. Catching and sparking the nine was Capt. Strittmatter. ACTION is the keynote of this year's baseball squad. Reading counter-clockwise: I. In September the speech classes worked on one- act plays. The best one, Curse You, Jack Dalton,' was given in assembly. These one-act plays served as a drama clinic to recognize natural talent and type- cast the rest. Plays also bring out such qualities as cooperation, punctuality, character development, de- pendability, and good sportsmanship. Two full length plays were presented. No Soap,’ on January 21, and Take Off Those Whiskers' on February I I. Two radio programs were given, The Necklace and Birth of Silent Night with 95 music department students. All speech classes recorded their voices on wire and discs which will be played back to them in May to compare with recent recordings and to note im- provement. Three spring plays were given, Introducing Susan on April 21, Dora Dean on April 27, and They Did Away With Uncle on May 5. Don't you dare!
