HISTORY OF THE OLYMPICS A modern version of the An- cient Greek Olympiad Games, one of the great festi- vals of Greece, the Olympics Games were inaugurated, in 1986, largely as a result of the effort of Pierre de Coubertin. He tried for a few years to get people interested, but had lit- tle support. However, in 1894, with the help of a few people he established the Interna- tional Olympic Committee. This committee brought ath- letes and spectors together ev- ery four years to compete in International Sports. After going over ideas and plans for the first site, they picked Ath- ens, Greece for its beauty, his- tory, and weather. In April of 1896, the first Olympic Games were held bringing amateur athletes from the United States, Great Britain, Germany, and ten other nations. Only forty-two events of nine sports were scheduled to take place in the ancient Athenian Stadium. Among the events were track, pole vault, high broad jump, shot put, discus, and many others. From here on the Olympics appeared every four years. We had headed out for Canobie Lake Park however when we got there the place was closed for the day! So the question was, “Where do we go now?” An- swer: Salisbury Beach. But there was one slight problem. We didn’t have extra cash with us because we had paid in ad- vance for our day at Canobie Lake and the money was'to be paid in check form to them. Solution: Find a bank and withdraw our money back from the Senior Account. After a short drive we found a bank and. waited somewhat patiently for Mrs. Klaiman to return. Amost forty-five min- utes had passed when Mrs. Klaiman appeared waving the cash. We were finally on our way to Salisbury. Neither gloom, cold, rain or darkness kept us from having a good time at Salisbury. Ask the par- rot if you don’t believe us.
