The young team composed of five juniors and four seniors managed to come through when the chips were down. At the end of the regular season, the Viks found themselves in a tie for the district led with Crosstown rival South Salem. Viking superiority shone through as they trounced the Saxons 8-1, and gained the play-off berth. Behind the pitching of ace left-hander Tom Stanley, and the hitting of joe Barry, Dave Mollgard, Rich Hadley, and Doug Watters, they went on to down Ontario 1-0 in the Quarter-Finals, and South Eugene 6-5 in the Semi-Finals. These victories sent them to Multnomah Stadium in Portland to meet Cleve-- land High in the championship game. With the backing of a spirited crowd, the forces of coach Schaefer climaxed the season by downing Cleveland 2-O to gain the championship in a hard-fought battle.
