lt if 4 if ' , Typical landscape on the grueling North Marion cross country course. The course includes treacherous mudholes, a barnyard and woody hollows to harass the dauntless harriers. In this particular meet North placed above MCNary and South Salem, and Scott Bremmer placed 19th in a field of 240. Cross Country Scrambling through brambles and bushes, over barbwire fences and railroad tracks, and fording streams and mudholes, our dauntless Vik harriers had a better than average season. The bushmen's new coach Mr. Paldanius, guided his band to a victory over South, the first in the school's history since the split in '54. Scott Bremmer, the team captain, helped to inspire his fellow harriers to three victories in 'iff' five outings. . '. f , X -e . The 1966 Boys' Swim Team splashed through a winning season, breaking 9 school records. The experienced team was paced all season by captain Scott McKeown, holder of 3 individual records in the 160 yd. individual medley, the 400 yd. freestyle, and the 100 yd. butterfly, Dan Rose, 100 yd. batkstroke record holder and 7th at District, and Buz Elgin, 200 yd. freestyle record breaker and 6th at State. McKeown carried the Viking name with him to place 7th in the all-state meet, highlighting his swimming career. Victories over South and Corvallis made the '66 swim- ming year one of which to be proud. The Girls' Team was lead by Peg Green and Kandis Brewer, 6th in 100 yd. breast stroke at District. Beat South was the cry and Viking victory was the result.. Upset triumph over highly rated South Salem and a two out of three victory series over the McNary Celtics highlighted the '67 season. Never was there a more Basketball I967 pleasant locker room shower taken than after the hard fought Saxon defeat. In his 2nd season at the helm of the Varsity Viking cagers, head coach Roger Judd molded a battle-hardened team worthy of any opponent in the stater The maple- court aggregation comprised of five seniors, five juniors, and standout sophomore, Mike Tathsan, provided the newly formed Viking Pep Crew with plenty to yell aboutr Team captain Mark Salstrom and all-Vik Tom Anderson led the Viking offensive charge throughout the season. Scraping under the backboards for North's share ofthe rebounds were Tom Drury, Maury Farnstrom, and Doug Watters. Seventh high point marker in the district, Watters displayed true Vik spirit and great ball handling ability.
