A fireless work- er, fhe energies of Vernon Gilmore made Salem a more wholesome place in which fo live. Scrafching more fhan fhe fop soil of playable ground, Vern culfivafed a worfhwhile recreafional area for all fhe children of our schools. Nof only did he culfivafe fhe school 'yards' for playgrounds, buf he sowed liber- ally his personalify among his associafes and friends. The chaff of frivia was weeded from his acfs, only fhe grain remains. Mr. Gilmore sfarfed feaching af Salem High in l93O and became afhlefic direcfor in I936. l-le was wifh fhe Navy during World War II from l942 fo I946. ln l954, he became direcfor of physical educafion, healfh, afhlefics, and recreafion for fhe Salem Public Schools and fhe Cify of Salem. The fop fwo phofos show lhe resulf of Vern's promofional abilifies. The picfures are of Clinger Field which is used by all of our P. E. classes and for all fraclc evenfs. There are also several fennis courfs on fhe field. The phofo on fhe boffom leff is Olinger Pool, cenfer of Olinger's summer play. To fhe righf is Benneff Field af Soufh Salem used by bofh Norfh and Soufh for fheir home foofball games. ll
