Class History When Eel River Township School at North Salem, Indiana opened September J, 1938, there were twenty-four pupils enrolled in the first grade. They were, Sherry Corne, Frank Cram, Betty Davidson, Geneva Dozier, Clayton Everson, James Everson, William Frazier, Robert Gilmore, Ruth Gretta Glick, Carrie Gordon, Mary Gordon, Virginia Heagy, Devon Jackson, Elizabeth Key, Juanita Lee, Rosemary Morgan, Donna Prichard, Joan Pritchett, Marjorie Rudder, Bobby Seaton, Samuel Vickery, Marthadel Wiles, James Wilson, and Joe Wyeth. During the year George Osborn, William Vann, and Mildred Fred Johnson enrolled. This made the total of twenty-seven pupils. Mrs. Irene Robbins was our teacher. When school started in thefall of 1939, the first grade had moved one door north in the grade school building. Our new teacher was Mrs. Merle Soots. The pupils were the same except for Frank Cram, Geneva Dozier, Clayton Everson, James Everson, Virginia Heagy, and Rosemary Morgan, who we lost during the summer. The new pupils were: Lonard Basham, Jack Voorhis, and Josephine Moore. Claude Westerfield enrolled during the year. This made a total of twenty-two pupils. In September of 1940 we moved across the hall to grade three. The new pupils were Tom DeLashmit, Eugene Lowe, and Jessie Lee Murphy. We lost Robert Gilmore, Elizabeth Key, and Samuel Vickery during the surnrner. During the year Verla Reese, James Patton, and Jane Lynch enrolled. The teacher was Mrs. Mary C. Daly, When school opened in the year of 1941 we found ourselves in the fourth grade. We had lost Jessie Lee Murphy and Robert Gilmore during the summer. James Patton and Grace Ward started the year with us but later left. Charles Estridge, Geraldine Steembe rgen, Bobby Riggen, and Barbara Lee Simon came during the year. Frank Whitely came in during the year and then left later. Our teacher for this year was Mr. George Eller. On September l, 1942, there had been several pupils to rnove away but we had gained several new ones. The ones we lost were: Sherry Corne, Thomas DeLashmit, Jane Lynch, Robert Neff, and Marjorie Watson. Alberta Lovins and Robert Woodall started the year and later left. Patricia Hamblen started the year with us also. During the year we gained Robert Meyers, Silas Gibbons, and Lonard Basham, Thomas DeLashmit came in again with us during the year. Miss Elizabeth Moore was our teacher for this year, When school opened in the fall of 1943 there had been several pupils to move away. They were: Charles Estridge, William Owens, Robert Seaton, Lonard Basham, William Frazier, and Eugene Lowe. Gladys Edwards, Alberta Lovins, Billy Gerald, Mary Shockency, Eleanor Shockency, Robert Dale Summers, and Kenneth Freeman. Our home room teacher was Mrs. Fern Cox. When school opened in the fall of 1944 we found ourselves just across the hall from the previous year under the home room teacher, Edwin Gossett. We had heard the seventh grade was a little harder, but this just made us more determined. We had gained quite a number of new pupils for this year. They were: Joan Lee, Marjorie Page, Mary Stewart, Robert Clampitt, James Gerald, Kenneth Stewart, and Patricia Hamblen, and Rose Van Hook. Glen Lawler, Silas Gibbons, and Billy Gerald withdrew during the year. In the fall of 1945, we were in the room which had a big 8 on it. This year Sara Heady and Earl Vansickle joined us. Ida Mae Porter and Leon Hicks came later in the year. During the year we had lost Earl Vansickle, Ida Mae Porter, Kenneth Stewart, Bob Clampitt and Bob Summers. Our home room teacher for this year was Roy E. Jones. 9

When school opened in the fall of 1946 there were fifteen Freshmen. The faculty for this year was as follows: Dale E. Brock, principal, Roy Jones, Elsie Thompson, Esther Rice, Roberta Miles, Ralph Bunton, and June Kloster. Mrs. Kloster was our sponsor for this year, Earl Hicks was our only new student for this year. We lost William Vann, Kenneth Freeman, and Leon Hicks. At the opening of school in 1947 there were fourteen pupils enrolled. This year we were on the other end of the initiation. Mr. Ralph Bunton was our coach this year. Don Ward joined us and Patty Hamblen withdrew. Mrs. Esther Rice was our sponsor. When school opened in 1948 we were jolly Juniors. Mrs. Elsie Thompson was our sponsor Eleanor Boston, Phyllis Ronk, and Bill Owens joined us. Later in the year we lost Claude Westerfield and Phyllis. Our play, Don't Look Now , was a great success. We also enter- tained thxe Seniors at a reception in the Civic Theater in Indianapolis. Our faculty this year was--Mr. Harbison, principal: Mrs. Thompson, our sponsorg Mrs. Kloster, Mr. Bunton, Mrs. Bales, and Mrs. Rice. When school opened in 1949, we were dignified Seniors. We sold cards, wrapping paper, napkins, and gave a play, Simple Simon Simple , to make money for our Senior expenses. The Juniors gave us a very nice reception this year. On May 7, 1950, our Baccalaureate was held in the Methodist Church. Reverend Chester Hanson was our speaker. On May 12, 1950, our graduation exercises were held in the high school auditorium. The speaker was Reverend Amos L. Boren, minister of the Pleasant Run Parkway Church. We were dressed in blue caps and gowns. Those classmates who went 'all twelve years together were Joan Pritchett, Marthadel Wiles, Betty Davidson, Juanita Lee, and Jim Wilson. ' Farewell Seniors Seniors, you high school days are now in the past. It is too late to ask yourself, Am I making the most of my opportunities? However now is the time to resolve to make the most of the opportunities ahead of you and to seize those that will raise you to a higher level and to pass by those which would drag you down. 'During your school days have you shown the traits of co-operation, dependability, initiative, sportsmanship, and square dealing? Those with whom you come in contact are looking for the same traits in you, whether you go to advanced schools or into a job. As teachers we can no longer go with you but if you will now use some of the lessons we have tried to bring to you in the classroom, we shall feel that you are ready to meet the challenge of life with a clear head and a willing hand. When you go through that door marked push may you find happiness and success. 10
