Small sized school, BIG SCHOOL ATHLETICS orth's students' success carried over from the classroom onto the playing field and courts of Rowan County, the Central Carolina QA Conference and all over the State of NC. The state rankings of the football and basketball teams were well-documented, and their championships threw NRHS into the statewide spotlight. North's varsity football team dominated the newly organized Central Carolina Con- ference, losing only to Bunker Hill in the second round of the state playoffs. The Ju- nior Varsity also showed dominance in its conference going Q-O-1. Several members of the varsity team were voted as All-Conference players with Darryl Jackson named Conference Player of the Year and Coach Larry Thomason as Conference Coach of the Year. Defensive end Antione Sifford was named to the All- State team in various newspapers around the state. This marked the second time in A years that a North football team marched to an undefeated regular season. North Rowan's men's varsity basketball team continued its incredible success by win- ning the conference title for the second straight year, and posting its third straight 20-win season. With one of the tallest lin- eups in the state the Cavs were one of the top teams on any level this season. lt was also Coach Bob Hundley's third consecu- tive championship basketball team. Along with the dynastics of the football and men's basketball teams came great individual success from members of North's less dominant squads. Audrey Hill has been the most imposing scorer among girls in the county for the past two basketball seasons, Sandra Matthews was named All-Confer- ence in the first season of North's cross coun- try competition. The wrestling team found it rough going under first-year Coach Roger Seacrest, but great individual efforts from Nolan Thomas and Anthony Cook gave the school some- thing to pull for in the state wrestling tourna- ments, Coupled with success in the classroom, the success of North athletes gives the North Rowan community something to be very proud of.
