As Freshmen, Juniors, and Seniors we were under the guidance of Miss French. As Frosh, we had a class dinner at the Knotty Pine, in our Soph- mas cards under the supervision of Miss profit with the Snack Bar, under the assistance of Mrs. Knapp. We were Scanner, that we published as a Eng- ner here at school, which not one of spaghetti. omore year we sold basketball tickets and Christ - Day. In our Junior year we really made a management of David Godkin, and the very proud of our school newspaper, The lish 3 class project. We had a class din- us will ever forget, especially that good 4ss Now we approach our final year. Time is very limited for us. We started off with our magazine sale. We topped all previous records with the grand total of $1832. Then came our Yearbook Ad Sales. Again we topped all previous records with our grand total of $765. With Dick Heineman as Editor-in-Chief, we believe we have the best yearbook published. Our Senior Play in April was followed by the Washington trip. Miss French As we, the members of the class of 1959, look back over a year of success, financially, socially, and scholastically, we wish to express our gratitude to our adviser, Miss French, who could inspire us with ideas when we had none, could give us a gentle push when we went astray and could always encourage us to do better work. 14 CATHERINE RICHARDSON The happiest person is the one who thinks the most interesting things. To begin with, in their Freshman year, they had a successful Candy Sale, and the proceeds were placed in their treasury towards their Washington trip. In their Sophomore year, their largest contribution to the treasury, was from their Christmas cards. At the end of their Sophomore year, they ordered their Junior Class rings. STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council, under the guidance of Miss Finch and Mr. Bailey, has worked very hard to present many activities which would appeal to the interests of the students and members of die community. Some of these activities have been the sponsorship of the Halloween Dance, Christmas Tea, All-School Prom, Student Association Banquet, and the various skating parties of which the proceeds were forwarded to the Student Loan F und. To make for a more efficient governing body, the Council has improved its system for presenting motions and committee reports within the Council meetings, it has improved its records department and because of the generosity of die administration, the Council was granted a permanent place to hold its meetings. The greatest advancement has been the improving and strengthening of the Student Association Constitution, to insure all students of a strong and efficient student government. We, as a governing body, are trying to improve our school activities and to give all students an equal and greater voice in Student Government. 44 SCANNER STAFF ROW ONE: K. Collier, J. Meyer, G. Foro. ROW TWO: R. Shufelt, C. Smith, Miss French, Adviser. ROW THREE: G. Durham, K. Smith, D. Knox, R. Bellinger. The class of 1960 published the Scanner as project of the English IU Class. The Staff especially appreciated the fine efforts of the Business Department in helping us to have a fine mimeographed paper and the special issues for the holiday seasons. The use of color and art work brightened up the pages and made it more attractive. A special project of the Staff was an 18-page issue commemorating National Education Week. The issue was distributed to all parents and teachers in the community. Our main goals were to keep the students and teachers better informed, to share our ideas with other schools in this area, to publish student opinion and the creative works of various classes. ROW ONE: Miss Schneider, Adviser; G. Marshall, D. Patchen, G. Durham, J. Allen. ROW TWO: M. Castor, C. Richardson, C. Smith, Mr. Ryan, Adviser. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The Honor Society this year is made up of 10 members under the supervision of Mr. Ryan and Miss Schneider. Many of the Honor Society members have ordered pins from the National Honor Society in Washing- ton. Our first project of the year was the planning and carrying out of the Initiation Banquet for the new members. The special speaker was Mr. Granger from Sodus. Many other interesting projects have been planned and we expect to have a very successful year. 45 Y O R K E R C L U B ROW ONE: Miss Waldron, C. Fitch, E. Houghtaling, E. VanKouwenberg, M. Baldridge. ROW TWO: S. Carr, G. Smith, M. Jones, C. Hendershot, L. Mables, K. Durbin. ROW THREE: S. Godkin, M. Matteson, S. Thayer. The Yorker Club members study about the history of our Community, state, and nation; they learn about the government, how it makes the laws, and enforces them. This year they have visited the Courthouse at Lyons where they saw how a real trial is conducted and also visited the Wayne County Museum. Many guns and large collections of pins and buttons made for several presidential campaigns in the U. S. were on display. On their way to Lyons they stopped to see the old ditch which was the Erie Canal in its first phase. On the return trip they visited the ruins of anold lock which represents the second phase of the Erie Canal. Later in the year the members visited Cooperstown. PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB The photography club is con- centrating on improving techniques of photo-taking and the process of making good prints and enlargements. Each year new members learn basic skills of film development and the making of their own prints. Color photography is discussed as interest demands. ROW ONE: D. MacDougall, C. Smith, D. Patchen, G. DRAMATICS CLUB The Dramatics Club which was organized early last fall, presented the drama, “The Remarkable Incident at Carson’s Corners,” by Reginald Rose, as the main project of the year. Although lacking proper stage and lighting facilities, the cast did a marvelous job with this play and the audience and cast alike, considered it a most worthwhile project. As there are only seventeen members in the club'and the play required a cast of twenty-eight people, several other students assisted in the success of the production. The club also presented two assembly programs, which the students enjoyed very much. The Officers are: President, Doug Patchen; Vice-President, Dot DeVay; Secretary-Treasurer, Jennie Allen, and Adviser, Miss French. ROW ONE: E. Houghtaling, J. Green, R. Bellinger, W.Madigan,R. LIBRARY STAFF Many periods of helpful, volunteer service are given to the library by the members of the student staff of die eighth grade and of the high school group. In addition to being scheduled regularly for one or more periods each week, a staff member may elect to join the Library Club, which engages in such projects as the Book Fair, bulletin board displays, book exhibits for special groups, and library programs. Correspondence with pen pals from other coun- tries was inaugurated this year. Since a student may register for this library activity for any ten-week period, nearly fifty students are participating members during the year. ROW ONE: N. McGreger, C. Smith, J. Poole, S. The Future Farmers of America had a full schedule this past year. During the summer, the chapter attended judging contests at Delhi. The chapter also represented Wayne County at the State Fair during the summer. The members also attended the Rochester F ruit Show with exhibits. Teams are planning to go to the Syracuse Fruit Show this year. The chapter plans to enter in the insect and disease contest, variety judging contest, and the apple grading contest. The chapter also plans on having a demonstration on tree grafting and whealbearing greasing at the Syracuse Fruit Show. The chapter exhibited apples at the County Fair, the proceeds from which totaled $34,00. The chapter also has had representatives at the county meetings. One of the outstanding accomplishments of the chapter is the individual boy's projects. Many boys have had excellent projects in the past year. Mr. Durbin, director of Audio VisualClub, teaches the students how to operate the following machines: Tape recorder, Filmstrip, and opaque projectors, movie machine and microphone. This equipment is used by outside organizations such as churches and the Grange. The Art Department has been making 3$ inch x 4 inch slides this year that are used in the old slide projector. This year, training classes were planned for artificial respiration and first aid bandaging. We had a guest speaker from the Syracuse hospitaL Other things planned for the year included a bake sale, ordering pins, attending the annual meeting of Wayne County Nurses’ Club, and a project to encourage tak- ing showers after gym classes. 50 mm?:Mm ■rxp5r ? ;•} . ?.« A;'i; ‘ V V •-■ A! ,J; 7 -V •„.% '.' - “7 , S . .vv v V- ••' Jrjsg v6 K'C, Spiral pkii itSil iiipgp MSI SPORTS ROW ONE: A. The boys really had their hearts in the game and displayed fine sportsmanship. With the loss of only six players, the team of next year should also show a fine record, if the spirit and interest is as great as it was this year. VARSITY BASKETBALL This year there are three lettermen returning to the squad: John Lee, David Godkin, and Don Mac- Dougall. Four Seniors and six Juniors make up the Varsity basketball squad. There is not speed, but a lot of hustle and interest are shown, and we expect a great improvement as the season goes along. Last year, we beat Wheatland-Chili in the pre-quarter final game, 54-50. We then faced Romulus in die quarter- finals and lost. With the addition of several outstanding J. V. S a better record is anticipated. Spirit is running high due to the fine teamwork shown by players and the excellent job that is being done by die cheerleaders and spectators. ROW ONE: B. Frazer, H. Terhune, R. Horton, H. Irvin, R. JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL On the Junior Varsity squad this year, returning are three third-year men, seven two-year men, and four first-year men. Due to a lack of height, the team is based on a strong defense and, with contin- uous work on the offense, by the end of the year should show a fine record. These boys have been showing a lot of hustle and a lot of speed; they will be a tough team to beat. JUNIOR VARSITY CHEERLEADERS Our Junior Varsity cheerleading squad was all new this year. They were surprised at all the work cheerleading took, but they all worked very hard and did a fine job of supporting their team. LEFT TO RIGHT: P. Loveless, S. Powell, N. Meyer, J. Yonker, G. BASEBALL BASEBALL TEAM The North Rose baseball team played the season with green players, as a whole, last year, since only three lettermen returned to the squad: Dick Guthrie, Doug Patchen and Terry Catchpole. Horace Irwin was selected as captain of the team. They played a very good sectional game against Romulus, losing by score of 5-3. This year, with the return of eleven lettermen, a more successful season is anticipated. TENNIS ROW ONE: C. Allen, D. Knox, G. Marshall, C. Little D. Patchen, T. Cathcpole, J. Edinger, L. Juffs. GIRLS' SPORTS Mary Pahl, Dot DeVay, Marion Rose, Katie Collier, Judy Richardson, Mary Moore, Though our girls didn’t get their new uniforms for their pic- tures, they were still in high spirits and did a fine job in supporting our team. Here’s Mary P, with her pep and originality, Dot with her friendly smile and spirit, Katie with her voice and willingness to work hard, Judy with her good jump, and Mary M., our tallest cheer- leader, who’s always neat and spirited. 56 ircfc 1.
