OF EDUCATION I want to be cognizant of my surroundings and value them. I want to be able to participate in the management of my country. I want to be my own personal leader, to strive to materialize my own incentives. I want to dream high, think high and plan high. I want to be able to rest on a lofty, remote hill, gaze over the placid awe of Mother Nature’s accomplishments and realize that I am slave to God only. I want to inhale the breath of liberty daily. But I know that my wants will not be bestowed unless I, and millions of others, acquire one requisite element:..........Education. It is the fulfillment of my dreams; the very essence of democracy. A great deal of our time was spent in selling various articles to earn money for Washington. In our Freshman year, we sold Readi-Jell and T-shirts. In our Sopho- more year, we sold Christmas cards. We took over the candy store in our Junior year, carrying along the usual traditioa Then in our last year, as Seniors, we sold magazines and ads for our yearbook. Each year of high school, we held a dance. Two years, our Sophomore year and Junior year, we had a class banquet, first at the Knotty Pine and then at the Wolcott Hotel. We are proud to have been the first class to publish a school paper-- The Scanner”, now being continued by another class. This year, our final year here at good old N.R.C.S., is going to be the best ever! When we leave, we shall have accomplished much more than this. Already we are looking forward to our ultimate goal - graduation! 21 JUNIOR CLASS ROW ONE: R. Spencer, M. Thayer, J. Edinger, J. Blauvelt, J. Dickinson, L. Bliss, A. Garland, B. Shaffer, ROW TWO: J. With fortitude and valor we must guard them, for their enemies are eagerly waiting to expunge them. With pride we must utilize them, for with desuetude they will decay. The ramparts of democracy are the foes of communism, totalitarianism and bondage. These ram- parts are the rights, the abilities and the desires of the American people to govern themselves. A democracy will endure only as long as the rights to self-government are guaranteed to the people. Once they are abrogated, democracy will perish. Our prime responsibility, as American citizens, is to protect our rights, those conferred upon us by the Constitution, and those which will sustain democracy for posterity. Rights are void lacking ability. Those with ability should govern, and we must accord to everyone that essential ability through universal education. The American must be able to think independently and choose wisely. He has to distinguish between the good and the evil, the democratic and the undemocratic, the truth and the half-truth. He must possess a sagacity procured only through education, the soil upon which ability is nurtured. The right is insignificant and the ability latent when the desire is absent. A democracy rests on the desire of its people to participate in government. Interest of a few leads to autoc- racy, but interest of the multitude leads to democracy. Our democracy belongs to all of us; we must defend it, sacrifice for it, share it and revere it, but above all, we must use it. The right, the ability, the desire, — no two can function without the third. These are the ramparts we cherish; these are the ramparts we watch. Submitted in the D. A.
