The defense of these rights has become necessary many, many times. The main idea and goal of 76 was for the U.S. to be an individual nation and not be dominated by any other country. Throughout our history we have continued to be anti-imperialistic. The War of 1812 is a direct example of this. We were so determined that no nation was going to be our master that we carried the idea toother countries. The two world wars may have led some people to believe that the U.S. was trying to take over and run things herself. Actually we were en- deavoring to keep these countries from being overthrown by greedy, over-confident forces. The United States soon realized that if she didn’t defend the right side in these wars, she would soon be under dictatorship and having to endure the things to which she was most opposed. The United States continues to fight against totalitarianism by having a national election of a president every four years. This gives more qualified people the chance to do what they can for their country and also eliminates the chance of the development of a dictatorship. We keep a large army and have an extensive reserve program for the protection of our basic rights. We not only protect our own freedoms but also try to help other nations gain them. In Italy, after World War II, the U.S. helped see that a more democratic form of government was created, with the freedoms and rights we hold so dear. At the Geneva conferences we have tried to unify Germany and give her the power to run her government in a democratic way. The countries of southeast Asia have also been affected by the Spirit of ’76 in ’56 in the United States. We have defended them against communism in the hope that someday they may be independent and free like the U.S. We are continually trying to combat communism in our country and abroad. Communists in the United States use our fifth amendment to protect themselves. Does this mean that we should repeal the amendment ? NO I That is probably what they want us to do. If this amendment was repealed it would hurt our fellow Americans extremely because they might have to testify against themselves in court. It is one of the basic rights we have to defend the most. As long as we continue to fight for the rights we claimed for our own in 1776 and as long as we champion others who believe as we do, we shall continue to have the spirit of ’76--not only in ’56 but forever, and not only in our own United States but in all freedom loving nations through- out the world. Some of the years highlights were: The Roller Skating Parties, where the profit was gladly donated to the Student Loan Fund, A Christmas Tea for Faculty and Students, and Poor Richard’s Day with ridiculous costumes. At Christmas-the school was gayly decorated to create the Christmas Spirit, by the counciL In the Spring, the Annual School Prom was a gala event, and the Honor banquet as well attended. The North Rose Future Farmer Chapter fenced in the south half of the Salter tract in part to separate this area from the area under construction at the present time. In this tract plots are being set up to con- duct experiments on pasture management. Two areas of squash were grown which due to inexperience and unfavorable weather conditions proved the least profitable of the crops grown in the past three years. Harold, Duane Frazer and Rodney Humbert attended the Delhi Stock Judging Contest. The chapter again won the county trophy on the basis of standing in all Judging contests. This year the chapter had one of the biggest exhibits of apples it has ever exhibited. Teams represented the chapter at the Rochester Fruit Show in the Apple Judging, Insect and Disease Identification and in Apple Grading. Ronald Withey re- presented the Chapter in the Speaking Contest. The Chapter sent representatives to Farm and Home Week at Cornell, The Western New York Poultry Producer’s Meeting, and held a Father and Son Banquet. F. F. A. YORKER CLUE ROW ONE, Left to Right: C. Bastian, Manager; W. Collier, J, Price, L. Pearl, C. Clingerman, H. McMahon, Coach Beauter. VARSITY BASKETBALL For the first time in a number of years, the first seven men on the North Rose Varsity are made up of Seniors. They are Price, Clingerman, Hickey, McMahon, Frazer, Dickinson, and Poole; other members of the squad that backed them up were Colburn, Barnes, and Pearl. Due to the shortage of height on our team, all were good shots and good playmakers, and they made up a good team. Because of the change of publication of the yearbook, no scores but the first Clyde game will be shown. Clyde 41 North Rose 40 Our team was ahead until the last six seconds in the game, when one of the Clyde players made a basket to have Clyde win. Due to the splendid coaching of Coach Beauter, we hope to be on top of the C league when the season ends, then we can go to the Sectionals. J. V. BASKETBALL BOTTOM: I. York, C. Frazer, D. Shipley, F.
