DEDICATION We, the members of the Senior Class,— honor you— the Community— which has been our home; you— our parents— who have tenderly guided us through our lives to this threshold upon which we stand; you— our teachers— who have given us our lessons in so much more than the three R’s; — All of you— our Friends. We do this because we want to say Thank you” for providing us with our Alma Mater, from which we now so proudly graduate, and for help- ing us through twelve years of learning and fun which will never be forgotten. To you, our HOME TOWN-we dedicate this ’55 Rambler. The Class of ’55

PATRIOTISM, A QUALITY OF CITIZENSHIP Patriotism is the elusive quality that cannot be captured in words, or defined in terms; but to him who possesses it, it is vital—the life and passion of his very soul. There were some who made a monument of it—General George Washington, who huddled with his men over a small fire at Valley Forge one bitter winter; Patrick Henry as he said ”1 am not a Virginian; but an American;” Nathan Hale in 1776, as he gave his life for something that meant more; Daniel Webster, Abraham Lincoln, and other great men who had it in their hearts as they fought and lived in their worlds for it. But it was not theirs alone. The tired soldier who crouched in his trench listen- ing to the whine of shells and clamor or combat in 1919 the flier over Iwo Jima in 1945—they had it, too. Today, it can be as vital to the farmer who listens to the 6:00 o’clock news at night, who goes to school meetings and caucuses, who votes every fall, who raises his children in the tradition of his American Heritage, as it is to the Presi- dent of the United States. More than a word or idea, it is a feeling, a feeling that is mine, as I pledge allegiance to a flag unfurled in the breeze, or stand in a crowd and sing our National Anthem with uplifted face and heart. It is especially mine when I see the efforts of men and women today who work to preserve the ideals and beliefs of democracy in government, and as I realize that 1 am a part of this great system—this American Heritage that is my personal duty to preserve. It is really more than a quality of citizenship; it is almost the essence of citizenship—the motivating power of love and loyalty that is in the heart of the American. It is patriotism—it is citizenship. (The above essay was written by Nancy Jewell, and was entered in the Annual D.A.R. Contest). ‘•MUSIC OF THE WORD” Music of the word, thou speakest To me; I hear thy voice sublime— It lends me peace, and hope, and love To soothe my noise-worn, crowded mind. From dusty volumes, shelf on shelf, I gain a treasure fine, and rare; I learn to breathe the essence sweet Of pure and poem-silvered air. Dear Poetry! How can I tell The foy I gain by knowing thee? A beauty lovelier than life— And thou hast shared it now with me. Nancy Jewell (The above poem was a winner in the National Poetry Contest—for High School Students—1954, and was published in the Anthology— Y oung America Sings ) 4
