Text from Pages 1 - 68 of the 1955 volume:

DEDICATION We, the members of the Senior Class,— honor you— the Community— which has been our home; you— our parents— who have tenderly guided us through our lives to this threshold upon which we stand; you— our teachers— who have given us our lessons in so much more than the three R’s; — All of you— our Friends. We do this because we want to say Thank you” for providing us with our Alma Mater, from which we now so proudly graduate, and for help- ing us through twelve years of learning and fun which will never be forgotten. To you, our HOME TOWN-we dedicate this ’55 Rambler. The Class of ’55 PATRIOTISM, A QUALITY OF CITIZENSHIP Patriotism is the elusive quality that cannot be captured in words, or defined in terms; but to him who possesses it, it is vital—the life and passion of his very soul. There were some who made a monument of it—General George Washington, who huddled with his men over a small fire at Valley Forge one bitter winter; Patrick Henry as he said ”1 am not a Virginian; but an American;” Nathan Hale in 1776, as he gave his life for something that meant more; Daniel Webster, Abraham Lincoln, and other great men who had it in their hearts as they fought and lived in their worlds for it. But it was not theirs alone. The tired soldier who crouched in his trench listen- ing to the whine of shells and clamor or combat in 1919 the flier over Iwo Jima in 1945—they had it, too. Today, it can be as vital to the farmer who listens to the 6:00 o’clock news at night, who goes to school meetings and caucuses, who votes every fall, who raises his children in the tradition of his American Heritage, as it is to the Presi- dent of the United States. More than a word or idea, it is a feeling, a feeling that is mine, as I pledge allegiance to a flag unfurled in the breeze, or stand in a crowd and sing our National Anthem with uplifted face and heart. It is especially mine when I see the efforts of men and women today who work to preserve the ideals and beliefs of democracy in government, and as I realize that 1 am a part of this great system—this American Heritage that is my personal duty to preserve. It is really more than a quality of citizenship; it is almost the essence of citizenship—the motivating power of love and loyalty that is in the heart of the American. It is patriotism—it is citizenship. (The above essay was written by Nancy Jewell, and was entered in the Annual D.A.R. Contest). ‘•MUSIC OF THE WORD” Music of the word, thou speakest To me; I hear thy voice sublime— It lends me peace, and hope, and love To soothe my noise-worn, crowded mind. From dusty volumes, shelf on shelf, I gain a treasure fine, and rare; I learn to breathe the essence sweet Of pure and poem-silvered air. Dear Poetry! How can I tell The foy I gain by knowing thee? A beauty lovelier than life— And thou hast shared it now with me. Nancy Jewell (The above poem was a winner in the National Poetry Contest—for High School Students—1954, and was published in the Anthology— Y oung America Sings ) 4 ADMINISTRATION To you, Mr. Edlnger, Members of the Board of Education, Teachers, and Staff Members, we ex- press our deepest appreciation and heartfelt thanks for your helpful guidance, and sincere efforts to help us through our school years at N. R. C. S. We thank you for the many hours which have been spent in building and molding our personalities, that we might become good citizens of our community. It has meant a great deal to us to have known and worked with you, and now at our graduation, we leave many wonderful friends. We have tried to set good examples as seniors, and we hope that we have succeeded in making you proud of us. We know that there have been failures, but we hope that you will profit by our mistakes, and that each of you will reach your senior year with the enthusiasm and hap- piness that we have felt. Thank you, fellow-students, for being our friends and for making our high-school memories such happy ones. Each person worked hard, doing his individual job. Our Senior Play was presented on November 4 and 5, starring Nancy Jewell as Cornelia Otis Skinner, in the play called, Family Circle.” This was a three-act comedy, with a cast of twelve, under the direction of Miss French, our Senior Class Advisor. Then came our yearbook, one of our most difficult tasks. The class was divided into committees, and each one worked on a different phase of yearbook publica- tion. This was one of the triumphs of our senior year from which we shall always have great satisfaction. Our Washington Trip—The ultimate goal of our four years of high school! The moonlight on the Potomac, the sun on the Washington Monument, the atmosphere of the restaurants, the aroma of southern fried chicken, the solemnity of the Lincoln Memorial-all these beautiful memories shall linger in our hearts forever. Class Night and Commencement marked the beginning of our careers—and the end of our happy days here at school. It is with regret that we leave our Alma Mater--Dear Old North Rose High! 17 7£wtfflt i mtftTcstanmit The 24th day of June, in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and fifty-five, we, the Class of 1955, of North Rose Central School, Town of Rose, in the County of Wayne, and the State of New York, being sad at heart at leaving our Alma Mater, but of perfect minds and memories, do make and ordain this our last will and testament. ARTICLES: 1, Marjory Gillette, leave my calm and dignified manner to all N. R. C.S. girls. I, Tom Hickey, leave my lost books, pencils, assignments, and good grades to anyone who finds them. 1, Leah Lipshitz, leave nothing. All I have, 1 really need. I, George Akins, leave my Best Wishes and Congratulations to the Class of 1956. Good Luck, Kids! I, Gary Fuller, leave my laugh to Miss French. I know you will take good care of it. You may need the extra horsepower some day, Jack. I, Alice Young, leave to Mary Horton my lock of red hair so she doesn't have to tint hers anymore. I, Nan Doolittle, leave my ability to hook ’em, heart and all, to Charlotte Knapp; use that hook before it gets rusty, Charlie. I, Beatrice Rose, leave my cheerleading ability to Jessie Hickey. Keep going and you'll make varsity again, Jessie. I, Marlene Anthony, leave my ability' to get my homework done on time to David Barnes. It really pays off, Dave. We thank our director and advisor, Miss French, for molding our efforts into a fine play. For all our hard work we received the great satisfaction of knowing that we were coming closer to attaining our final goal—the Washington Trip.” 19 SENIOR SCOOPS NAME PET PEEVE FAVORITE SAYING ALWAYS FOUND FAVORITE FOOD SECRET AMBITION BIGGEST CRUSH Larry Clingerman Nancy J. In the middle of October, the excitement of ordering the Class Rings aroused the interest of everyone in the Junior Class. They made profits from the candy store and popcorn machine all the year during the noon hour. They also sold pop, popcorn, and candy at basketball games. The Juniors enjoyed the Christmas Party with a grab bag. Most of the gifts were humorous. Surely the Class of 1956 will long remember their Junior year. We have not learned scholarship alone, however, you have taught us not only lessons of life, but how to live as responsible citizens in our world. Much would have been missed without our activities, and our sports which have taught us their les- sons in sportsmanship and cooperation. We leave you now, our beloved Alma Mater, but, we shall carry pleasant memories of you in our hearts always. Row 1, L. to R.: G. Bamaba, L. Clingerman, N. Jewell, M. Gillette, E. Catlin. Row 2: D. STUDENT COUNCIL President................................................................Nancy Jewell Vice-President...................................................Joseph Hickey Secretary......................................................Patricia Meyer Treasurer ••••• •••• ••• • ••••••••••••••••••••••• Ronald Matteson The Student Council achieved many goals this year and sponsored various school activities. Some of the year’s highlights were: — Halloween party, a Christmas Tea for Faculty and Students, An Exchange Assembly with Wolcott School, and a Dance which was sponsored for the Student Loan Fund. Poor Richard’s Day was celebrated on January 17, with the usual display of old clothes and ridiculous costumes. In the Spring, the Annual School Prom was a gala event, and the Honor Banquet was well at- tended. The Council is constantly trying to improve our school activities, and give the students a greater voice in the government. Seated, L, to R.: J. Skutt, P. Meyer, J. Hickey, N. Jewell, R. Matteson, E. On October 22, the Yorker Club enjoyed a trip to Cooperstown. In December, for our Christmas party, each member brought a gift which was used by the Rose Health Committee for boxes for needy families. The Yorker Club had a box social on January 31, 1955 In April our club was host for the Lake Ontario District Yorker Club Jamboree. The Yorker Club is interested in the history of New York State. During October this crop was harvested and sold. The chapters gross sales on this project was $196.50. Judging continues to be an outstanding activity with contests at the Palmyra Fair, State Fair, Wayne County- Judging Contest, Rochester Fruit Show and Rochester Poultry Show. At Palmyra, the chapter took first place in the Vegetable Crops contest and placed boys in high in- dividual places in the Dairy contest. The chapter placed boys on three of the four teams representing the county at the State Fair. Glen Loveless---fourth high individual in the Dairy- contest was high boy in the county in one contest. This gave the chapter posses- sion of the rotation judging cup for the Wayne County F. F. A. Chapters. At the Wayne County judging contest, the chapter took first place in the fruit judging contest. At the Rochester fruit show, the same team took first place in apple judging. The chapter attended the Rochester Poultry Show. The chapter this year has taken part in the Farm Journal magazine sale. Basketball games have been played with Red Creek and Wolcott with North Rose winning. Probably an outstanding activity of the individual this year is the accomplishment in individual farming programs. A record number of purebred cattle are now owned by chapter members. Outstanding in their efforts are: Larry Clingerman, Glen Loveless, Richard Hall, Gerald Bastian, Stanley Durham, Glen Avery, Arden Avery, and Rodney Humbert. Outstanding in projects has been the work of Duane and Harold Frazer, with five acres of dry beans. F. F. A. Row 1, Seated, L. to R.: G. Loveless, Mr. Gillette, E. Champlin, H. Barnes. Row 2: L. NORTH ROSE SOCCER SEASON SHOWS STRONG DEFENSE, WEAK OFFENSE The Maroon and White hooters of North Rose were knocking on the door all season, but did not have the password. In all but one of their eight games, a goal would have meant a win or a tie. Although a total of only nine goals was given up over the eight games, Coach Amyot’s charges were only able to salvage one win and one tie against six defeats. Four of the losses were by scores of 2 to 0 and one was 1 to 0. Wayne Central, last year’s Section V B” winner and this year’s Wayne County ABC and Section V winners in the finals, were the only winners over North Rose to score two goals when they defeated Maroon and White 4 to 0. Marion, this year’s B” representatives, managed a 2 to 0 victory over North Rose. The Wayne Couity C” winner. Red Creek, earned a 2 to 0 victory at Red Creek, and scored a last minute goal at North Rose to make a tie game at 4 to 4. North Rose split victories with Wolcott, winning 4 to 2 at North Rose and losing 1 to 0 at Wolcott. The run down of scores for the year are as follows: Opp. SCORES North Rose 4 Wayne 0 2 Wolcott 4 2 Red Creek 0 2 Williamson 0 2 Sodus 0 4 Red Creek 4 i Wolcott 0 2 Marion 0 42 This year’s Varsity Squad ended the season of regular league play with the record of 7 wins and 9 losses. Jack Price led the squad with 201 points, fol- lowed by Tom Hickey with 189, Karl Champlin with 158, Jack Hates with 99 and Carl L. Clingerman with 97. These boys made up the first string, with Joe Hickey working in occasionally on the first string to contribute greatly to our wins. Backing these boys were Gary Fuller, Ronald Matteson, LeRoy Poole, Bill Dickinson, Herb McMahon, and Harold Frazer. Managers were Glen Loveless and Jerry Bastian. We realize that we owe much to Coach Beauter for sacrificing so much of his time and effort for us. Al- though we weren’t the most successful team, we value his coaching on the rules of sportsmanship, as well as on the rules of the game. Ronnie Matteson and Carl Davenport did much to keep the other boys on their toes by threatening their positions. Wayne County was represented by North Rose in the Section 5 tournament held in Rochester. Don Hartley was the singles champ from Wayne County after he and Jack Bates eliminated all other opponents and had to play off the tie for the championship. Don lost to Bath in Rochester by a score of r4; (r4. The doubles team from North Rose went all the way in the Wayne County tournament and also represented Wayne County in Rochester. They were defeated by a team from Batavia by a score of 7-5; 9 7. These same boys came back and won the county championship and the banner for the school, by not losing a match all season and lost but one point all season. The one point we lost was to Williamson in a non-league match. Although the North Rose J.V.’s tried hard and showed good sportsmanship, they had a very' unsuccessful season. The teams they met had a height advantage on them. The team was composed of Sophomores and Freshmen. The top three scorers were: David Colburn, Marvin Jensen, and Johnny Dickinson, who scored 190, 71 and 55 points respectively. J. V. On October 8th, six Varsity Cheerleaders were chosen to cheer the Varsity Team on to victory. The Cheerleaders started the year off right with new uni- forms, consisting of maroon gabardine jumpers and perky white satin blouses. Their new peppy cheers and the snappy routine were behind the boys in defeat or victory. 46 47 49 COMPLIMENTS OF THOMAS LYON WHITE and F.
