Being a Senior meant ities as the junk haul, newspaper drive, magazine sales Y and class play had their reward--the Senior class trip, Selling yearbook ads provideda chance for the Seniors to display their business management ability. Term papers required hours of concentrated study and a lot of patience. But the rewards, in most cases, were worth the effort. With all of these activities added to the normal classroom work, the Senior year passed by too quickly. Guiding the Seniors through this memorable year were these officers: Roger Genter, President, Ric Nelson, Vice-President, Irene Henry, Treasurer, Steve Meyer, Secretary. FINAL TEAR WAS Betty J. Von Deylen Larry C. Wesche SENIOR T EAR The high-pitched atmosphere of the Senior Hall ranged from jgy to despair, but usually light-hearted fun was the password. Dashing paisley shirts and red licorice were always in evidence as were scattered papers left over from stacked lockers. Cries of Curse you, Red Baron, and We're the angels sent from heaven, we're the class of '67 echoed down the halls making them come alive. Yelling at pep rallies and basketball games also showed the pep and school spirit of the Seniors. With the arrival of the long-awaited pictures and name cards, the graduating class once again converged in the hallowed hall to make the traditional ex- changes. Other varied activities consumed a great deal of the Seniors' limited extra time. Play practice, fish- ing in the science room aquarium, pulling muscles while playing Twister, and converting the senior trip into one long, glorious party, were all part of the thrilling final year. fRightj One of the more light-hearted moments finds Gene Meyers and Jim Rentz fishing in the science room aquarium. S V Club meetings, basketball games, dances, banquets --all played their part in activities '66-'67. Although a casual part of their climb up the ladder of education to the students of R.H.S. they were an essential part. Each activity required time and effort, but t.he rewards of fun and social contacts far outweighed the work put into them. They made the many steps through school lighter and much more enjoyable. Q Prejudice and Puff were the bases on which the Junior and Senior classes of Ridgeville built two very successful plays. Thunder on Sycamore Street was presented on October 21 and 22 by the Senior class. Although Joseph Blake's prison record was the re- sult of an unfortunate traffic accident, the neighbors did not want that kind of person in their respectable neighborhood. A mob, under the direction of Frank Morrison, finally forms with the intent of getting rid of the Blakes--forcibly, if necessary. Justice prevails in the end as the Blake's regain their rightful place in society. The Junior class displayed their theatrical talents on the nights of April 21 and 22. Their play The Perfect Idiot was a delightful comedy in 3 acts. Discovering that Puff, the star athlete, is in danger of becoming ineligible a group of his friends ask the school genius to help them out. Dan Tennyson, a type of person who seems to read dictionaries for bedtime stories, agrees to help them out. He con- ceives the idea of using a form of hypnotism. Hi- larious happenings result when Puff recites poetry, the hypnotism machine falls into the wrong hands and Dan intentionally fails his college entrance exam. Susan Rohrs, Marilyn Amos, Randy Bremer, and Judy Reiser enact a portion of the play. ED TO DRAMA A D COMEDY Mr. Latherby QRichard Von Deylenj under the in- fluence of a hypnotism machine, thinks he is a parsley-loving rabbit. A grandiose new event was added to Ridgeville High School's activities this year with the appear- ance of Homecoming. Since the traditional High School Night was eliminated, the students needed a new event in which the Royal Court would be maintained. Such an event was Homecoming. The night's festivities were started off on the right foot, as the Falcon reserve team defeated McClure's junior varsity. Next, the Queen and her court were introduced. Linda Bostelman was crowned Homecoming Queen for 1966-67 by Super- intendent F. F. Hesterman. She was escorted to her throne by Co-captains Steve Meyer and Larry Wesche Preceding her were Cheryl Damman, Freshman At- tendant, escorted by Roger Center, Wanda Mahnke, Sophomore Attendant, escorted by Denny Meyer, Nancy Gerken, Junior Attendant, escorted by Randy Bremer, and Susan Rohrs, Senior Attendant, escorted by Ric Nelson. The Queen and her court had a joyous evening as the Falcons walloped McClure's varsity, 82-50. A dance sponsored by the Student Council in honor of the Queen was held after the game in the multipurpose room. Music was provided by the Constellations from Napoleon. A THLETIC A WARD Thursday, April 6, marked the date of the annual Athletic Banquet, an event at which Ridgeville's athletes are honored for their participation in the schoolls sports program. After everyone had enjoyed a fine meal, Mr. Vernon Hesterman gave the welcome and introduced Mr. William Blitz, the Toastmaster for the evening, Mr. Blitz, in turn, introduced Mr. Handler, who had the wrestling team stand. Coach Gerken was next up, and he presented the baseball team with their letters and awarded co-captains' trophies to Larry Wesche and Dennie Rohrs. Mr. Blitz then introduced Coach Norris. I-Ie presented first-year varsity cheer- leading awards to juniors Betty Von Deylen, Becky Miller, and Marcille Beck, and senior Linda Bostel- man. Then he awarded numerals to the reserve play- ers and letters to the varsity players, and he gave special awards to Dennis Rohrs, Coaches' Award, Denny Meyer, Most Improved Player, and Steve Meyer, Most Valuable Player and Best Free Throw Percentage. Doyt Perry, Athletic Director at Bowling Green State University, was the featured speaker. The main point of his speech was that you can achieve any goal if you work hard enough at it . fAbovej Best Batting Averages--Dennie Rohrs, Dale Von Deylen, Denny Meyer, and Larry Wesche. This especially held true for Ridgeville's five athletic teams, as the four coaches pictured here successfully molded men out of the boys who played under them. Handling the greatest variety of coaching chores was head basketball coach Dan Norris. This past season, his third at Ridgeville, Coach Norris' squad came up with the best record of his coaching career, 13-7. In addition to varsity basketball, Coach Norris also took charge of reserve basketball, Jr. High base- ball, and cross country. In his fourth year at Ridgeville, varsity baseball coach Les Gerken's team came through with a mod- erately successful season. With the aid of Coach Randy Pickerel, Coach Gerken also took over the rest of the basketball chores. He coached the Freshman team, while Coach Pickerel directed the Junior High. Besides the three previously mentioned sports, Ridgeville added two new ones to its athletic program this year--wrestling and track. Mr. Michael Handler and Mr. Michael Leson guided the wrestling squad, and Mr. Charles Meyer fnot picturedj conducted the track team to a fourth-place finish in the first annual Henry County Laegue Track Meet for all the A schools in the county. fAbove rightj Mr. Dan Norris, QRightj Mr. Lester Gerken, fBelow rightj Mr. Randy Pickerel, fBelowj Mr, Michael Handler and Mr. Michael Leson. This year's squad was composed of six seniors, three juniors and three sophomores. The reserve team, which was made up of two juniors and six sophomores, finished with an 8-ll record. The season was started on the wrong foot, as the Falcons dropped a seven-point decision to Pettisville. They rebounded quickly to defeat league foes McClure and Malinta. After the next four games, of which they lost three, their record stood 3-5. A few changes were made, and the Falcons promptly ripped off a nine- game winning streak. Pettisville and I-Iamler were counted among the victims, and thus early season losses to both teams were avenged. The Falcons then prepared for the big battle with league-leading Hol- gate. They tried valiantly, but the Tigers squeezed out a 93-86 win. The Falcons eked by Deshler, and then prepared to face Holgate again in the Ayersville Sectional Tournament. They didn't quite have it, though, as Holgate ended the Falcons' season with an 80-61 Victory. At the conclusion of the season, the Henry County All-Star Team was announced. Two Falcons players, Steve Meyer and Larry Wesche, were honored for their outstanding play. Steve was awarded a first team berth and Larry was placed on the second team. FIRST ROW: Scott Nissen, Kevin Schnitkey, Richard Von Deylen, Don Lugbill. SECOND ROW: Bill Fether, Jim Rupp, Butch Young, Rick Cordes, Coach Norris. 1 Three juniors and one sen- ior made up this year's varsity cheerleading contingent, which was the same as last season's reserve squad. These four girls, juniors Becky Miller, Marcille Beck, and Betty Von Deylen, and senior Linda Bostelman, were chosen in the spring of 1966 so that they could attend a cheerleading camp in the summer and have more time to practice their routines. Early in the fall the cheer- leaders picked out bright blue sailors' outfits trimmed in white for their uniforms. Cap- tained by Marcille Beck and assisted by Mrs. Dan Norris, the squad organized the pre- season Pep Rally, sponsored dances and cake raffles, and always kept the school 10070 behind the team. Left: KNEELING: Becky Mil- ler. STANDING: Marcille Beck, Linda Bostelman, Betty Von Deylen. CHEERLEADERS BOOST TEAMS TO School spirit was at a feverish pitch the night of the pre-season Pep Rally. The rally included a snake dance through the streets of Ridgeville, a bonfire, and a dance afterwards. One of the main attractions of the snake dance was the Spiritmobile , below. Besides its obvious value to the spirit of the evening, it was used to transport the rnascots of opposing teams to the bonfire. There they were burned at the stake , just as the Falcons' opponents would be during the season. TOP: KNEELING: Vickie I-Iesterman, Tanya Young. STANDING: Rita Rohrs, Pat Lohse. VIC TORT After many hours of practice learning cheers and routines, the Reserve cheerleaders could be seen at every Reserve game urging the team on to victory. Attired in blue jumpers with white blouses, Pat Lohse Vickie I-Iesterman, Rita Rohrs, and Tanya Young en- couraged the Junior Varsity to Go, Fight, Win . They also held a cake raffle to help defray some of their cheerleading expenses. Their Jr. I-Iigh counterparts, Pam Gerken, Debby Bremer, Jane King, and Pat Norden, also spent con- siderable time and effort. They followed the Jr. High basketball team on the season's schedule and tournament trail. PEP CLUB QFIRST ROWQ: Betty Von Deylen, Linda Bostelrnan, Marcille Beck, Becky Miller. Posters and solid backing for the team were the main objectives of the Pep Club this year. Each week a committee was assigned to be in charge for that week. Everything from Snoopy to paper tigers was used to build spirit for the upcoming game. Senior Parents' Night was the high point of the Club's activities. The Club prepared a special program to honor the mothers and fathers of the senior athletes at the last home game. Corsages were presented to the mothers and the team beat Deshler to add the fin- ishing touches to a memorable evening and year. 30 OR GA NIZA T10 fLeftj Denny Meyer conducts the Latin Club initiation ceremony. fBelowj Participants anxiously await their appearance at the FHA Style Show. l 3 1 HONOR SOCIETY PROVIDED BOOK FOR ST DENTS ABOVE, LEFT: Inducted in the traditional candlelight ceremony were Rita Rohrs, Gloria Short, and Nancy Gerken and probationary members fSEATEDj Linda Roehl, and Denny Meyer. Each class at R.I-l.S. took pride in being them- selvesg each was locked in a unique struggle to stay a step ahead of the class behind them. Although each advancement meant new and greater responsibility, each class could not wait until that time when they would be a year further in high school. And every underclassman coveted that day when he would at last be a mighty Senior, his job alone to rule the halls at R.H.S. Guiding their class in various activities were: Beth Nelson, President, David Meyer, Vice President, Terry Von Deylen, Secretary, Steve Hoffman, Treasurer. The students entering the seventh grade took a big step forward on the stairway of education. They had to become adjusted to a different kind of class sche- dule and a variety of teachers. In addition to these, the new Jr. High students were now included in varied extracurricular activities. Under the guidance of R their advisor, Mr. Gerken, they held a class skating party in the spring of the year. To some people the seventh graders seemed never to be able to remain in one place for a very long time. This only shows their eagerness for action with bigger and better things to come. JR. Only one short year ago the eighth graders were the down-trodden members of the Jr. High. But that year eventually passed and they became the leaders of the complicated world of Jr. High. With the help of their advisor, Mr. Blitz, they planned and carried out a class party in the spring. Such activities as basketball, baseball, chorus, solo contest, and others kept them busy throughout the year. Registration for the next four years of high school was carried out in the spring. The glorious era of being the eighth grade ended and all too soon they were ready to step up into the hectic world of high school. These unique experiences are mingled with a prescribed amount of school work to add up to a year of diversified activity. The fun and merriment of Freshman Day were followed that evening by a party given in honor of the Freshman by the Sophomores. All of the Freshman proudly cheered as their first attendant to the Royal Court, Cheryl Damman, was announced. Registration also caused some extra prob- lems this year with the future vocational school having to be considered. Guiding their class through the hectic Freshman year were QL.-R., Brian Bickel, V. In the fall the class elected their officers and picked their rings, which they received after a short eternity of waiting. Besides this there was the job of raising funds for the Senior trip. Committees had to be set up and work begun on the Junior play and the Prom. With the task of planning such activities came the satisfaction of seeing the plans carried out. A junk haul and a car Wash proved to be fairly success- ful ventures. Learning parts and arranging props and scenery for the play was followed at last for the chal- lenge of performing for an audience. The hours of decorating and organizing for the Prom also seemed well spent when that grand night finally arrived. fLeftj Class officers Betty Von Deylen, secretaryg Gloria Short, treasurerg Nancy Gerken, president5 and Elverna Kruse, vice-president coordinated the years activities with the help of Junior advisor Mr. Norris. Teachers are endowed with the great responsibility of leading their students through a step-by-step ap- proach to the vast resources of knowledge in the world today. They are not super-human, and thus cannot teach those who do not wish to learn. But the teachers at Ridgeville did their best to transfer the knowledge they had gained in their years of schooling to the students. ADMINISTRATION GUIDED SCHUUL The voters of the Ridgeville School Board District elected QL-RQ Mr. Donald Badenhop, Mr. Walter Delventhal, Mr. John L. Henry, Mr. Elias Frey, and Mr. Arthur Hoffman to positions on the school board. These men met the first Tuesday of each month to discuss school matters. School Boom' Ridgeville's Board of Education dealt with many problems which confronted it during the year-- teachers' contracts, approving expenditures, and considering consolidation, and many others. The board members also met with the Napoleon board of education to consider the prospect of future consolidation. An unofficial survey was taken of the residents or Ridgeville and Freedom Townships by the Citizens Committee to discover their opinions on this matter. The results indicated that the citi- zens preferred to remain as we are as long as prac- tical. Mr. Emil Schult served as clerk and treasurer of the school board. When called upon, he also served as a part-time teacher. 56 Mr. Harry Sharp Qabovej served as principal for two- thirds of the year. He attended Edinboro State and held B.S. and M.S. degrees in education. In addition to teaching English and Speech he was advisor for the Senior Class and the Student Council. ADMINISTRA T10 Providing the best possible school program was the main responsibility of the administration. Principal Harry Sharp painstakingly organized the class schedule to meet the students' needs and interests and to com- ply with state requirements. This schedule was imple- mented through the combined efforts of Superintend- ent F. F. I-Iesterrnan, Mr. Sharp, and later Mr. Dan Norris, who became acting principal when Mr. Sharp resigned to take a position in another school system. These men also worked with the other teachers to keep courses, textbooks, and materials up-to-date. Another important part of the administration's job was to enforce school regulations and make purchases authorized by the board of education. For example , a hall monitor system was established during the 1966-67 school year. Also, a new bus was purchased for a new route to include the students of St. John Iutheran School, Freedom Twp. This was necessary because of the state school bus regulations passed in 1966. Mrs. Marie Schnitkey frightj served as secretary of the school office. Mr. F. F. Hesterman Qabovej received his A.B. degree from Valparaiso University and his M. A. from Bowling Green State University. Besides personal counseling, Mr. I-Iesterman performed several other duties: supervising registra- tion, conducting freshman guidance classes, ad- ministering tests, providing advice and information about colleges and careers. Mrs. Kutzli kept the books in order and in good repair. She taught many library skills to the student librarians, and her help with research problems was invaluable at term paper time. Again in 1966 the services of a student teacher from Defiance College were available to RHS. Miss Kathleen Stauffer conducted speech and 9th grade English classes for most of the first semester. She also advised the Pep Club during that time. RidgeVille's seven buses were skillfully manned by five men and two women. Mr. Donald Niebergal drove the bus which transported the Freedom Twp. school-children to their respective schools. The kitchen staff fulfilled one of the most difficult taks in school--satisfying the appetites of hundreds of people everyday. The responsibility of keeping the school neat and clean fell to the janitors. The guiding lights down the paths of education are held by teachers. It is not impossible to make the journey down these paths without a light, but the way does not seem as difficult with a lamp to guide. It is not easy for teachers to direct the students on their way. Knowledge, understanding, patience and even a sense of humor are required. But together the students and teachers learned and grew for the few brief months of the school year. Then it is time for the students to again proceed further down the path until they finally meet a greater teacher--life. Forty-one migrant students were enrolled for special classes during the month of September. fRightQ Mrs. Thelma Short is shown performing her teaching duties. 66 FIRST ROW: Tommy Rosebrock, Tommy Andrews, Beverly Bockelman, David Fitzenreiter, Douglas Dietrich, Elaine Damman, Patsy Frey, Lori Oberhaus. Besides becoming acquainted with these names and faces, the first and second graders soon adjusted to the other changes of another school year. Before long the first graders found that they could actually read--at least a few words. Excited about this fact, they joined in frequent trips to the library with the second graders, whose vocabulary and ability were constantly growing. Other high points of the year were Halloween cos- tume parties and Christmas parties, and the operetta put on by grades 1-6. The first and second graders played Dutchman, Japanese, and Indians and learned much about these people in getting ready for the presentation. A very impor- tant thing for some was the beginning of instrumental music lessons in the fourth grade. The event that was probably the most unique for them was a visit to the new skeleton in the science room. A few had the pleasure of touching it. Written book reports for the third graders brought on new problems and experiences. But school was not all work and no play. Intramural basketball games kept the students occupied at noon hour. The youngsters also participated in hobby shows and an operetta. fLeftj Assisting the teachers with the special reading class and elementary audio-visual was Mrs. Phyllis Hesterman. Reaching the upper grades meant important prog- ress for the fifth and sixth grades. Lessons were a little more advanced than in the lower grades, and the quest to develop skill in reading, writing, and arith- metic became more intense. With increasing skill came new learning experiences like visiting through- out the world via the words and pictures of a social studies book. Activities beside actual classwork gave the fifth and sixth graders a chance to develop a variety of interests and talents. In art class they expressed their creative imagination, and the finished products on display added color to their classrooms. Hobby and science shows demonstrated the expanding boundaries of their young minds. New responsibilities such as washing dishes in the cafeteria helped the sixth graders prepare for the big step into junior high.
