Penny Lane there is a barber showing photographs Of every head he’s had the pleasure to know And all the people that come and go Stop and say hello On the corner is a banker with a motorcar The little children laugh at him behind his back And the banker never wears a “mac” in the pouring rain Very strange. Penny Lane is in my ears and in my eyes There beneath the blue suburban skies . . . — Penny Lane The Beatles 8

HOME SWEET HOME — Traditional North Reading. The name has a certain ring to it. To a stranger it might speak of a strange, new, exciting place. It might stir up images of marvelous, exotic experiences. To someone who has lived there all of his life, however, the name speaks of nothing but where he lives. North Reading is the typical small town with one high school, neighborhoods full of families with young kids and several grocery stores. Ryer’s and the town’s puny library seem to be the centers of activity for our age group. Other than these bustling mini-metroplises. North Reading is the epitome of a quiet, rural town. Despite its outwardly staid appearance, there is “life beyond the library.” Nothing major, of course, but enough to keep the itchy feet around town for a bit longer. Parties seem to be the mainstay that the students at N.R.H.S. thrive on. Even though North Reading is so incredibly lethargic and very difficult to locate on a map, it does have its advantages. The same scenery that makes it a rural town is also beautiful. If you’re the quiet, reflective type whose idea of recreation is a stroll in the woods, our town is probably heaven for you. The winding roads and paths lead to unexpected and wonderful places. Most of all, however. North Reading is dear to us because it’s where we’ve grown up — it’s part of live history. (When your name is in the encyclopedia for winning a Nobel prize, North Reading will be right there, in ink, as your hometown.) Even though we may think, “Ah, North Reading is the most boring town in the world,” we show our support for it (especially at pep rallies where we scream our brains out — ever wonder why you were screaming? Could be something called school spirit.) Plain, simple town that it is, North Reading is our hometown and will be in our hearts no matter where life leads us. — E.W. 7
