We will always look back and recall the good times, the hard times, the triumphs and the disasters. We took this into consideration when looking for a theme. We had to find one thing that was common to all seniors, that tied us together, and that preserved the memories. After a great deal of thought, we decided to use music as our focal point. After all, music appeals to every- body, be it rock, rap, classical, country, pop, or new wave. Everyone has a favorite song; everybody sees part of his life reflected in the lyrics of a popular tune. Our memories are preserved in the melodies of today. Years from now, we will hear songs that will remind us of this year and our entire high school careers. Therefore, we base this yearbook on music, the songs of the seniors, and the rhythm of youth. 6 HOME SWEET HOME — Traditional North Reading. The name has a certain ring to it. To a stranger it might speak of a strange, new, exciting place. It might stir up images of marvelous, exotic experiences. To someone who has lived there all of his life, however, the name speaks of nothing but where he lives. North Reading is the typical small town with one high school, neighborhoods full of families with young kids and several grocery stores. Ryer’s and the town’s puny library seem to be the centers of activity for our age group. Other than these bustling mini-metroplises. North Reading is the epitome of a quiet, rural town. Despite its outwardly staid appearance, there is “life beyond the library.” Nothing major, of course, but enough to keep the itchy feet around town for a bit longer. Parties seem to be the mainstay that the students at N.R.H.S. thrive on. Even though North Reading is so incredibly lethargic and very difficult to locate on a map, it does have its advantages. The same scenery that makes it a rural town is also beautiful. If you’re the quiet, reflective type whose idea of recreation is a stroll in the woods, our town is probably heaven for you. The winding roads and paths lead to unexpected and wonderful places. Most of all, however. North Reading is dear to us because it’s where we’ve grown up — it’s part of live history. (When your name is in the encyclopedia for winning a Nobel prize, North Reading will be right there, in ink, as your hometown.) Even though we may think, “Ah, North Reading is the most boring town in the world,” we show our support for it (especially at pep rallies where we scream our brains out — ever wonder why you were screaming? Could be something called school spirit.) Plain, simple town that it is, North Reading is our hometown and will be in our hearts no matter where life leads us. — E.W. 7 Penny Lane there is a barber showing photographs Of every head he’s had the pleasure to know And all the people that come and go Stop and say hello On the corner is a banker with a motorcar The little children laugh at him behind his back And the banker never wears a “mac” in the pouring rain Very strange. Penny Lane is in my ears and in my eyes There beneath the blue suburban skies . . . — Penny Lane The Beatles 8 i Social activities . . . just about the biggest part of many seniors’ lives. Bitten by the senioritis bug, restless with freedom, seniors crave variety and excitement in their evenings. Yet what exactly is there to do in good ol’ N.R. after 8 pm? Well, for one, we have a cinema. Oops, forgot — it’s going to be remodelled into something more useless. Scratch one op- tion. Besides, only sophomores without licenses and juniors without money see movies in town. What else? Ryer’s store has always been a popular hangout. Where else can you relax with a slush, chat with your friends, and discuss future plans? Of course, this activity pales after about three weeks. Next alterna- tive, please! North Reading does boast a few restaurants. We have Kitty’s if you enjoy all-natural pizza (recycled, that is), Kelly’s Oyster House if you prefer fresh-from-the-freezer seafood, and the Hornet’s Nest if you’re into soggy sandwiches. There’s the oh- so-classy MacWong’s; however, the new Hong Kong seems to be leading in the Chinese food race. For a decent pizza, one can drop by Brother’s or Captain Pizza, two of the few places that don’t boast beyond their expectations. However, these places (with the exception of Brother’s) do not constitute “hangouts”, and are merely viewed as refilling stations for seniors in search of fun. Some representative 10 What is the next alternative? This brings us to the party scene. Strangely enough, for an otherwise humdrum town, North Read- ing is given to raucous bashes and hearty parties. For many, a party is not considered a success unless half of the town’s minimal police force shows up to “enforce law and order.” Though most seniors are under 21 (though some have been in high school long enough to be earning retirement pay), we all seem able to partake of some form of liquid refreshment. Parties have several habitats. Some inhabit homes in which parents have been eliminated for the evening or have been bludgeoned senseless with the television or other hypnotic means. The stronger species may be found around campfires in the deep woods. In the summer, some may even migrate to the sandy shores of the eastern seaboard. And what of the typical “ party animal?” We’re all heard the term before. However, after much research, one is forced to conclude that there is no such thing as a typical beast. There are those that wear ragged jeans and faded “Aerosmith” shirts; there are those clad in Calvins and silk; and there are those in between. Yet they all have one thing in common; a love of excitement, noise, and people. Though it seems that partying constitutes the majority of in- town attractions, some brave souls can venture into the bowling alleys or the arcade; some contemplate cars, chicks, and ere ation for hours on end in the parking lots at Zayre or Atlantic. What options are left? Well ask Dad for the keys and head OUT of town! 11 Another day, another daydream . . . If the velocity is twice the acceleration . . . Well, hello there! If you take this picture I’ll — I Yeah, real funny joke, Coughlin! 12 That IS disgusting . Dear John . . . And then he said . . . And now for my Madonna imitation . . . Yeah, so now what?? Smile! you’re on candid camera! 13 OK, everybody — do “The Bird!” y That really A asn’t • . ,1 I just can’t take calculus seriously. Can you identify this ? 5 14 ! Though a high school is supposedly a place for learning, it is also a place to have fun in. Social contact sometimes seems more important than intellectual growth. Students can relax and enjoy themselves both during classes and in free periods; of course, this includes lunch, where one of the favorite pastimes is playing the ever-popular group game, “Name That Lunch!” Who said that?! mystery meal? I funny, Liz. SHE T 15 17 THE CONDUCTORS We seniors would like to take a moment to thank you for the time and effort you gave us during our years at North Reading High. We appreciate the support you showed us and are grateful to you for making these some of the best times of our lives. These people are willing to work long hours and sacrifice their personal time for the good of their group. These peopl e include managers, roadies, secretaries, agents, sound and light crews, wardrobe coordinators, and the like. All must work together to make the band the best it can possibly be. But when Grammy time rolls around and the awards are handed out, the most these people get is a brief thank-you on the part of the star. For the most part, they are all but forgotten. Yet had they not all persevered, that group would not have its place in the limelight. 26 Like a popular rock or pop band, a school must have some dedicated people in the wings. These people supervise all the little details that come to be so important to the success of the school. While we as students are all aware of our teachers, principals, and coaches, we are forgetful of the less-apparent but just as important positions held by two remarkable women. Mrs. O’Donnell and Mrs. White have single-handedly run the Resource Room and have su- pervised its contents for the past few years. We at the yearbook decided it was time to acknowledge these two women for their un- faltering service to the school and its students. Their work has made the difference to many a student, and we would like them to know how much they are truly appreciated. So, the Class of 1986 would like to dedicate its yearbook to these unsung heroes, in hopes that we can demonstrate our thanks in a way other than with words. FACULTY WILL W. First in our search, we encountered C.J. Abati. He is presently coach of the Boston Celtic and seems to be leading the team to yet another NBA playoff victory. His star player is And McNabb, who plays for about 75% of every game as center. Next week, the Celtics will face th L.A. Lakers, who have recently signed Rich Weaver as guard. Sportscaster Greg Twohig wi] be taking great interest in the game, and will be looking for a scoop or two. His motto: “This ii the true story!’’ His camera crew consists of Danny Kiley and Dana Rowe, who are also intei ested in getting some footage of the Roland Revue, a one-man comedy show starring Rolan Lee. The show is receiving rave reviews, especia lly in New York. Jill Delano, Kris Bloom, ann Debbie Carucci, all chorus girls in the show “Born on Broadway’’, sigh, “And we knew hir back in high school!’’ “Born on Broadway’’ itself is a huge success, and the early show is ofte ' , attended by millionaire Mike Brussard, who appears in his Rolls, custom-designed by Andre i Hill and chauffeured by Joe Sinopoli. Joe also doubles as a drummer for the superstar roc group “Jake and the Electric Objects’’, led by Joe Marotta. Other members of the group an Mark Berry, who has been called “the new Eddie Van Halen’’, and Dave Carberry, whose bas., work has led also to a profitable solo career. Music producer Paul Unni, assisted by hii secretaries Jeanne Davis and Cindy LaPorte, has released several albums for Carberry Dave’s press agent, “Jumpin’ Jim’’ Murphy, terms Carberry “an awesome entertainer.’’ Man major stores, including Maria’s, a nationwide franchise owned by Maria Spina, carry hi albums. A new line of books, “Life for the Yuppie Prep’’ by Karen Hoyt, is also a good sellei across the country. Luke Tonachel, who co-owns a ritzy ski resort in Vail, Colorado, attribute his success to these books. His partners, Mark Scarano and Jeff Pinkham, also double as pn ski instructors. Laura Surette and Karen Bubar manage the ski shop, and David Allen handle all ski repairs. Vail is now also the American center of haute couture. Christine Sciretto can vouch for this for she is the owner of T res Chic, an expensive boutique. Her assistants Sheri Kelley and Luc ' Razionale have nothing but praise for the shop. After a morning spent there, a shopper cai have his or her hair done at Liz’s Place, owned by Liz Collins and run by Anne Mari( Prudhomme and Debby Connors. Cara Clark is a regular there, as is Kim McFadden. Th 94 I mens’ cuts are handled by Paul Gagnon, whose innovative styles have been acclaimed vorldwide. Peter Dysart, star of the recent film “The Renegade Trombonist”, will allow no )ther hairdresser near his golden locks. Ron Taylor, author of “How To Begin and End a i ' l leaningful Relationship in 4 Weeks”, agrees that Paul’s styles are unquestionably hip. New I ' ork Times journalist Csilla Sandorfi has already profiled Gagnon in a Pulitzer Prize-winning ' irticle. With her profits, she has visited Paris, where Kim Gilbo currently holds the position of 1 merican Ambassador to France. While in Paris, they lunched with Marianne Oest, a noted I Cartographer who is on tour of Europe. Marianne was on her way to London to visit Juli iVlorrison, who is now married to one-time rock idol Sting. While in London, they caught a T)erformance of “The Sound of Success” starring famed Broadway entertainer Sarah Rex. T5he is playing opposite Jeff Lord, who had discovered acting in high school. He is now the inodern equivalent of Robert Redford. Joe Ambarik and Eric Anderson, both wealthy interna- ional businessmen, were spotted in the audience, as was well-known researcher Andy 3ennett. Tina DiVola and Kris DiFraia are also living in London, and are proprieters of “Punks- 5 R-Us”, a popular new-wave fashion store. Betsy Humphrey is working as their fashion con- ' ultant and works closely with Lisa Berinato, the store’s financial manager. Karen Gardner and ' errie Duval sometimes browse through when they visit London with their wealthy oil- i hagnate husbands. When they return to the States, they often encounter Lenny Rose and s David Pearson, who are employed as Customs officials in charge of all confiscations. Erika s A uorinen and Brigitta Peterson are working as airline attendants, and are on good terms with [ oilots Scott Andersen and Chuck Pothier. Scott Ring and close friend Jane Moulison are II Irequent passengers, especially when they journey to Brazil to see Jim Moulison and Mark i Heaney play in the World Soccer Championship games. Chuck Robinson and Keith Silva are I bo-owners of a shipping business in Rio, and executive assistant Dot Longo keeps things run- ning smoothly. Their exports are received in the United States by Brian Burt and Chris Peck, I ho unexpectedly went into business together under the name “Short Rates” and are now I bianufacturing sports equipment. Steady buyers are Barbara Crowe and Gerilyn Sprague, s Dwners and managers of the L. A. Raiders — Gerilyn’s the brains, Barbara’s the brawn. Also on Mhe sports scene are Mike Amirault (third baseman for the Milwaukee Brewers), Jeff Arthur I [manager of the Washington Redskins), and John Bibo (manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates). J Out in California, we found that Nick Cassotis is marketing his own wine, aided by Tom Muise and Scott Genzier. In the same state, Maryann and Ed Bezzati have organized “Daredevils i Jnlimited”, a stunt company often patronized by major Hollywood studios. Pro wrestlers Bob -A inters, Richie Taylor and Jim Parsons often moonlight as stuntmen for the Bezzatis. i! Construction is at an all-time high in California and contractors Tom Gallant and Cheryl iiNloseworthy are swamped by offers. To relax, they attend performances by the Carmel If! 95 Chorus, a group directed by Theresa Ridgely and Linda LoChirco. Also in arts-related fields Natalie Griswald and Janice Chandler will dance in “Swan Lake”, to open in Los Angeles thi ' month. Andy Chiango and Chrissi Mauceri will present an exhibit of their paintings and scul ptures at the end of the week, and actresses Cathy Murphy and Melanie O’Leary plan to eaci begin a new movie project. Director Pam Wilkinson will be involved in Melanie’s productior and will be working with scriptwriters Clarice and Dianna Ventullo. Gaffer David Norton wii also be involved in the show, as will lighting director Jeff “Rubbahed” Legrow, makeup artis Karen Higgins, costume supervisor Sandy Mitchell, and prop directors Stephanie Ibrahim anr ' Sheila Welch. Extras for Melanie’s movie will be hired from “Faces”, a top modelling agenc: run by Linda Encarnacao. Models Kris Taylor, Katie Ohotnicky, Debi Wall, Julie Sampson, an Colleen Thirkell are all excited with their chance at stardom. Cars for the movie will be provide ' by Tom Peluso, creator of Peluso Motors (whose success is now rivalling that of Ford an GM). Michelle Mahoney heads the sports car line, while Tom Laquidara sells family vehicles Tom Fuccione runs the “Bargain Basement” automobile sales. Peluso’s cars are often see parked at swanky nightclubs like Kelly’s, owned and operated by Stephen Kelly. Trac. Johnson, Debbie Hardy, and Debbie Spurr are cocktail waitresses, and Margaret Tannian i« the bartender. Ruth Fiore entertains three nights a week with her comedy show; she hac already been called the next Bette Midler. Steve Ford, John Finnegan, and Rick Quade tak- care of the valet parking. Beth McAuliffe has opened a cosmetics store called “Blushes’ ' Makeup consultants include Amy Joyce, Kathy Guy, and Buffy Rowntree. She is located nex door to the Pacific Supermarket, owned by Wendy St. Pierre. Her employees include Johi Pruneau, Robin Winan, and John Masi. Further down the block one will find the K P Gym, owned by Paul Onessimo and Kir Enright. Their aerobics instructors are Lisa Tremblay, Lisa White, Amy Kelleher, and Lar Hartmann. Weight trainers include Mike Gabrian, Paul Horan, Jon Sylvester, and Tir Sauvageau. Laura Fogarty is overall fitness director, and Eric Hozubin designs all the fitness programs. Due to its prime location, it is frequented by many celebrities who make their home? in California. Chris Haynes and Jeff Coughlin, the World Monopoly Co-Champs, often giv’ their playing wrists a good workout. Marianne Donato, the top female weight lifter in the Unites States, keeps her tone by daily workouts at the K P. Finally, T revor McDonald, who is now pro surfer, also visits the gym frequently. However well-populated with alumni that California may be, Europe has laid claim to mam North Reading grads. Keith Lindley, the famed international playboy, is often seen talking wit publicity-shy David Schoolcraft, who is now designing a new line of fashion jeans. Pat Deswarte is a koala-keeper at an Australian zoo, and she often runs into Jodi Mack and Lis Hutchinson who own a ranch on the outskirts of Sydney. European Frog-Jumping champ Kell | 96 I iai.ones is currently residing in Germany. She mentions that she has seen Simone Schroeder ttiiince or twice; Simone now owns a dance club called “Uptown at the Palace with the Rascals’’ cuii Hamberg. It is very successful, apparently because of its American feel. Fiona McCarthy ac larried rich and is now living in a magnificent castle in Ireland. Also in Ireland are Mike Viens 01 nd Linda Strachan, on vacation from their permanent home in England. Mike is in training for wie Olympic Decathlon, and is supported by Linda’s thriving ceramics business. However, lii ley also plan to visit New York sometime in the near future. afi When in New York, perhaps they’ll bump into David Liberman, who is manager of the young mck group Menudo. Sandy Farrahar, head of the Menudo fan club, is a great asset to David, in like Connolly, a used car salesman, provides the group transportation free of charge. He also leyorks closely with Kevin MacLean, who is now known as “The Repo Man.’’ MacLean’s latest in ictim was Jeff Day, who holds a position as a speech therapist at a high school in the Bronx, eille suffers frequent health problems due to the pollution, however, and spends much of his ie me in the J M Drugstore, owned by Jodi Mack and Maura Mantia. Their pharmaceutical ssistant Kristal DeHart is extremely good at her job, and is worth every penny of her salary, ccording to Day. Also based in New York is Geoff Bemiss, who is presently head accountant Dr the Shell Oil Corporation. His secretary, Tina Rose, recently quit and was last seen in ik!| lontreal, looking for “a wild party”, according to Bemiss. Massachusetts still seems to have held some of our grads. David Artone and Sean Trainer re living in tents on Hampton Beach and shoot hoop during all daylight hours. Ricky Hayes, nable to become a pro baseball player because of a bad knee, is now selling Astroturf to the lanagement of Fenway Park. Jim Sully and Greg Branch are local yard grooming specialists, nd Susan Wenzell has opened a secretarial school in Boston. Kathy Feeley, owner of the ifipayre Corporation, is often happy to hire graduates from Susan’s school. And last but not ast, Mark Spicer and Richie Spindler are congressmen from Massachusetts. Whew! It sure was an experience to gaze into the future like that! Were you surprised at how ' (People turned out? Well, maybe if you look behind their outer appearances, you’ll see that your eulassmates haven’t changed all that much. Maybe after all that time, the song really did remain (he same. What do you think? 97 If you got that picture I’ll . . . ! Charlie’s angels . Look! Scott has lice! This is OUR turf! 102 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY L. Tonachel, J. Morrison, M. Oest, K. Ohotnicky. P.
