Text from Pages 1 - 172 of the 1985 volume:

FOR REFERENCE Do Not Take From This Room And it seemed, with each day, we learned something We began our journey so very long ago. Our first shy step, that first small glow And as we traveled, things happened, we grew. The doors are now opended and with so much to share. But we’ve survived every mile. We’ve been taught to make sense, create reason out of rhyme. We pursue a new goal, since “Once upon a time’’ We embark u pon the future, giving thanks to those who care. Stop and learn, understand, that this is just the beginning. We’ve wandered through our lives with a wave and a smile. TABLE OF CONTENTS DEDICATION page 4 FACULTY page 7 SENIORS page 23 ACTIVITIES page 71 CLUBS page 97 page 107 SPORTS Dr. Mary Anne Wolff Ms. Wolff came to North Reading twelve years ago and has continuously stimulated students with her knowledge of the Social Sciences. In 1983 she took on the position of World Affairs Club Advisor and continues to be one of the moving forces in the organization. Ms. Wolff resides in Somerville, where she enjoys preparing and dining on ethnic foods. She also enjoys reading, especially mystery novels, cross country skiing, and jogging, and can be seen running around the campus several times a week. Born in New York and raised in New Hampshire, Ms. Wolff graduated from Tufts University where she majored in Political Science. Before going on to graduate studies, Ms. Wolff worked as both a newspaper reporter and a teacher at a nontraditional, “alternative” school. She obtained both her Masters and Doctorate degrees in Education from Boston University. For her dissertation she ran a summer educator’s workshop that was made possible by a grant from the National Science Foundation. 4 Ms. Wolff, rarely do students encounter a teacher who is as dedicated to the art of learning as you are. From Karl Marx to the Kung San, your presentations and classroom discussions are always informative, inciteful, and interesting. Becuase of your respect for all opinions, from the mainstream to the absurd, we have become more open-minded and aware of the diversity in the world. We now realize that true education is not memorizing selected facts and theories, but that it is the developement of thinking and communication skills. Your dedication goes far beyond the classroom, and you always find time in your busy schedule to help us. We respect you as our teacher, mentor, and friend. Thank you seems insignificant compared to the time and effort you have put into helping us grow personally, emotionally and intellectually. Ms. Wolff, the class of 1985 is honored to dedicate our yearbook to you. 5 THANK YOU Mr. Robert Ward Looking back as seniors, we now realize how much we’ve grown and matured throughout our final high school year. Without your guidance and efforts, this year would not be nearly as memorable. We thank you for sacrificing your time, and often your sanity, to help us succeed. In case we haven’t mentioned it, you are truly appreciated. 6 ADMINISTRATION We would like to express our gratitude for the caring dedication you’ve shown in supporting our endeavors. Though we no longer will be in your presnece, we know that your thoughts are with us, and we will always cherish our times spent at North Reading High. What a wonderful and fantastic idea — a movie based on the life of North Readings famous class of 1985. But really, how did this Hollywood producer, 85’s own David Remillard, expect me to dig up almost 200 people that had scattered in the last 25 years since graudation. I must admit, however, that a picture about a typical 20th century high school could prove entertaining, and now that astronaut and astronomer Jim Donnelly has discovered life on Mars, the large audience would be uninformed about life here on earth at that time. I began my search, logically, at North Reading High School where I came upon many of the graduates. In the office, I spoke to the principal’s secretary Joanne Dardano and found that many had remained in the school system. Sports coordinator Jim Barnes heads up the athletic department where girls’ softball coach Nancy Specht, field hockey coach Kim McCarthy, and football trainer John Fiore apend their time. Tricia Canavan is also still in the sports scene in North Reading as the cheerleading coach. Other 1985 alumni still in the ranks at the school are typing instructor Donna O’Keefe, geometry teacher Shawn Hylan, and John Moulison and Heidi VonSneidern, who co-head the language department. The town itself also still houses many of the stars-to-be. Kitty’s proprietor Ronnie White told us that he would spread the news to his chef Paula Mangifesti, his catering specialist Holly Spousta, and head waitress Gail Govoni. On the old route 28, now Interstate 28, I found Lisa Coggswell managing Zayres and Teresa Walsh running a flower shop called Beau-K. While talking to my friends I learned that I was right up the street from a new massage parlor, “House of Hands’’, run by Ed Porras and Sean Levoy. This is quite an accomplishment for it is the first one since the ban on them some years ago. Susan Repucci, our new mayor, has lifted the ban on such establishments with the help of her husband and campaign manager Jim Spellman. She employs Elizabeth Hunt as her receptionist and Ellen Glavin as her secretary. I then brought my inquiries to some neighboring towns and found Larry Riddell coaching football in Lynnfield, and Dr. Susan O’Connor, with nurse Pam King, working at Mass. General Hospital. Kim Dermody and Sheila Healy both are lifeguards and Recfeation Monitors at Hampton Beach where the owners of Camp Hornet, John Eogarty and John Coletta bring their students. I found former class member Annemarie Nelson working in a bookstore. Jennifer Brown and Kristine O’Brien both write for the society page of “Ciao” magazine, a traveler’s delight owned and published by Suzanne Rubenstein. I was told that several classmates had left the country. Wendy LaBrecque, our ambassador to Prance, often can be found in Paris dining with actress Tracy Prentiss who grew tired of being an engineer in the states. She often attends the theater where Juanita Estrada and Lisa Acquaviva dance with the Paris Opera Ballet. Also in Europe are models Karen Butler, Christine Angelo, and Sue Metropian, who wear fashions created by designer and owner of Couture by Cara, Cara Williams. Often attending their fashion shows is Gretchen Ede, wife of England’s Prince Andrew. She has employed John O’Brien as chief of security and Theresa Peck as head chef. Bill Hughes is also living ih Europe where he writes. He has recently received much acclaim for his latest book, Facism in Amierca — I Told You So. Also no longer in the states is Vincenzo Desiderio, who moved to the far east for unknown reasons. I had now made a sizable dent in my search. But I still had a long way to go. This movie had better be a blockbuster. Using my new connections, I learned that several students had gone into business together. These included Connearney and Cofer Insurance, where Stephen and Rob specialize in accident coverage, and M.J. Beans, a health food chain owned by MaeJane Victor and Melinda Bean. Running their own health spa Stud are Tom Laroche, John Moda, and Brian Flynn, where they are frequently visited by Wayne Corbett and Michael Silvia, who work at their own escort business. Can We Help You? Scott Cain and Richie Caruso have opened a leather goods store, and Michelle Gallantowns Jeans Unlimited, employing Jan Camelia and Tracy Jannino. Paul Broughten and Dean Mola have opened a Baseball Betting Parlour where they both serve their advice to many clients. Kristina Vose and Kim Sands have coauthored a book called Don’t Laugh at Me, a gigglers guide to escape. And last is the beauty salon Classycuts, recently opened by Stefanie Jamieson and Michelle Buonomo. With all of the contacts now possible, I pushed onward my search. It was becoming very exciting and the script possibilities with such a group was seemingly endless. Some professions were shared by many of 1985’s graduates: Jessie O’Brien, Jeannie Smith and David King are all artists or illustrators. The local fire department boasts of Ed Nicosia, Janice Martin, Elaine Burns and David Ereiswick while police recruits arfe Paul Maguire and Melanie Winam. Ed Bottleson and Eric Luoto have become esteemed chemists. Hollywood movie sets and cameras won’t be an unusual sight for some of our classmates. Kevin Smith has made a career in films and Janine Parks has gone from an accomplished actress to directing and writing scripts, working closely with producer Theresa Monaghan. Model Brad Welch has also done some acting. Other famed alumni that I encountered include gameshow host Matt McQuillen, BMX racer Diana Bishop, former captain and present trainer or the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders Amy Buczynski, president of Izod Lacoste Rob Hansen, and pilot Carol MacNeil. Not to mention winner of Gold medals in the 1988 and 1992 Olympic diving team Kim Hart, Sportscasters Stephen Germino, and Kerry Hennessey, car racer Deidre Donovan, and Cindi Hull, known as “psychologist to the stars.’’ We certainly won’t need any extras for this movie. As I travel I find more and more of those I search for. Shaun Murphy owns Limos Limited, where he employs drivers Rob Smith and Andrea Avjian. Joe Ridgely is an animal trainer with Bamum, Bailey and Becky’s circus, now owned by Ms. Regan where Julie Whitney and Janet Roberts are clowns, Susan Bugden and Wendy LaPorte work with horses, Ken Kulsa is a snake charmer, Stephen Pisco is the ringmaster and Debi Rogers performs on the tightrope. Saloon owner Frank Kenrick has his place overlooking Boston Harbor where he often sees yachting instructor Gary Estes and shellfish specialist Eric Crabbendam. Resorts and Condos have popped up all over the country now, one of the more popular ones is Lords on the Lake, owned by Kenny and Kim at Lake Winnepausakee. Tennis instructor Jeanne Leonard spends much of her time there as does sailor Robert Gallo, when he’s not at sea. Janet White vacations there, or so I’m told, when she isn’t in Spain, where she works as a tour guide with Diane Dewar. I found many ’85 graduates in very odd places: Kristine Sweetland works in a gum factory, Gavin Sutcliffe is a computer game creator, Doug Haskell is a Lawn Doctor, and Bonnie Richardson is an ice cream manufacturer. Cindy Nilsson is a doughnut queen in the prepared food industry. Sabine Pepper is a spice specialist in Shaw’s Market, the chain owned by Valerie. Tina Amann and Donna Lord joined a convent, while Alex Paicos and Dennis Moody reside in a monastery. Liz Gatchell is a talent scout who has discovered the rock group “Freemen”, with lead guitarrist Rob Vittozzi, Scott Michaelhaugh on sax, and Fedi Orsino on keyboards. Michael Russo is a marine biologist and model of men’s high fashion beachwear. Peter Casey is a mathematician turned comedian and Wendy Nichols is a bank teller. Entering the music field are Peter Fedele and Ruthann Hall, Peter teaching guitar and Ruthann giving French Horn lessons. Kim Bugley and Kevin Arsenault are trumpet players. Kim Lowthers and Karen MacNeil work as DJs at Kiss 108, replacing the retied Lisa Lips. They are often visited by the vocal smash The Twins, a group started by Stacy and Daryl in college. Dena Cameron is their vocal instructor. Of course, some of our alumni have moved. They include Kathy Rasche, who works as the buyer for Macy’s, the Maine branch. She is often visited by green grocer Barbara Warren, who founded Portland’s Potatoes, Inc. Opening a gas station in Arizona are Steve Puglia and Ken Duval who hired GTO mechanic Scott Douglas, truck mechanic Doug Richards, and Tom Williams as manager. They often bring their grimy clothes to dry cleaner Susan O’Connell, and go to Manicurist Kim Mattson for their dirty nails. Living in Alabama is General Brian Moore, where he is stationed with soldiers Brian Hansen, Ed Johnson, and Ricky Madison, traveling constantly are photo-journalist Jennifer White, and shoe salesman Kurt Schumaker. They often run into inventor David Schuettner, who shows his inventions nationwide. Suzi Taylor is never in a place long, as she has become a profession al groupie. Jessica Tompkins is often seen on the USO tour, traveling with her husband. It looks like our movie is going to have to be turned into a miniseries! We certainly have enough sports stars to fill a few hours. These athletes include Celtics center Trent Tedesco, gymnast Paula Mastro, surfing sensation Howie Patterson, mud wrestlers Sharon Greig and Lisa Higgins, discus thrower Joanne Jacobson, United States volleyball stars Kris Riley and Katie Tryder, and weightlifter Brian Welch. Some of our alumnists have gone into very noble professions. Ellen Doherty is the Dean at Holy Cross where Tracey Higgins is the social director. Joe DiBlasi is a lawyer and Joeanna Nee is a bone specialist. Public speaking teachers David Stacey and Kelli Scott have helped many shy people, using Linda Pasquale and Lisa Dunham as their demonstrators. 1985 also boasts Nobel Peace Prize winner Michael Bloom, and Greenpeace president, Linda Morris. Some of our former classmates will not be featured in ' our production. Soldiers Joe Healy and Dave Kenrick are on maneuvers. Astronauts Yvonne Encarnacao and Jennifer Buczynski are in orbit. Rockette Marianna Perullo is on tour where she will visit the famous nightclub “ROCCOS”, owned by Robert Steph, where Valerie Rose works as a hostess. Jason Davies, now residing in Scotland, is in seclusion writing a novel. And finally. Indy 500 winner Chris Maker is in the hospital recuperating from an accident. He is tended to by neurosurgeon Kristine Lloyd. Well, it sure looks like this movie is going to be interesting, at least. Cameramen Joe Gavin and Ken Story are sure going to have their hands full with this bunch. I don’t know how the makeup girls, Wendy Steeves and Nicole Nephew, are ever going to get all of the faces done. Hopefully, the movie will be released by the summer of 2010, shown at local cinema. By the way, a good choice of a theatre might be Prudi Presents, owned by Prudi Langtry. While there, be sure to say hello to head usher Danny Morrow.
