Oh you ' ve got to have friends to make that day last long. And from thexiusk til the dawn here is where I ' ll stay. m . ] 1 i [ V 1 B IR IL %, i N V Standing at the end of the road boy ' s waiting for my new friends to come, I don ' t care if I ' m hungry or cold Freezing! Mr. Carey ' s unlimited devotion, not only to the students at North Reading High School, but to society itself, is shown by his constant involvement with people in numerous ways. He is currently the Athletic Director at North Reading High School, and also teaches Physical Education. He has run the annual Bike-a-thon for the March of Dimes since 1971. He has also been the coach of our well known baseball teams for ten years. In those years he has brought to N.R. four Cape Ann League titles in 1967, 1968, 1969, and 1970, and two Class C Championships in 1969 and 1970. In 1974 the team won the Mass. State School Championship for which Mr. Carey was named Mass. Coach of the Year. This past spring he was also chosen as the Northeast Regional Coach-of-the-Year. The girls have experienced Mr. Carey ' s unending dedication also, as he has introduced the Weight Control Program for girls, has officiated the girls ' Volleyball games on a fifteen foot ladder and even taken over as the Cheerleading Coach occasionally. There is never a dull moment or a problem that can ' t be solved when Mr. Carey is around. His endless spirit and enthusiasm are always visible whether he be in his office, on the field, or taking his hourly run in the corridor. This is the Mr. Carey that we know; the one who is always there when needed and the one who has made himself a legend in his own time with the students at NRHS. Mr. Carey, this is why the Class of 1977 is dedicating its ' yearbook to you. 10 For a student of school, class is ended. For a student of himself, class is halfover. For a student of the universe, class is just beginning. ADMINISTRATION Mr. Kenney graduated from Holy Cross and received his Masters Degree from the University of New Hampshire. He has devoted 13 years of his life to the students at North Reading High School as Principal. He is well known throughout the school for his friendly personality and fair judgement. Many remember Art Kenney when he pitched for the Boston Braves under the late Casey Stengal. We will remember Mr. Kenney for all he has done to make our four years at North Reading High Scool more enjoyable. Arthur J. Kenney Arthur A. Barresi Mr. Barresi has been Vice Principal of North Reading High School for 12 years. He controls discipline and keeps order among the students. Mr. Barresi graduated from Lynn Classical High School and received his Bachelors Degree from Salem State and his Masters Degree form Boston University. Without Mr. Barresi there would not be any unity or organization within the student body at N.R.H.S. 14 Guidance Jennifer Smith John Gould M ‘ 4 A Walter Miller Claudia Dardeno 15 nrnFfi Personnel Foreign Languages Cheryl Seth Joseph Venti Cheryl Bumpus Margot Girodet (above) Sue Kerwin (left) English Thomas Murphy Russ Dever (below) Whitney Pederson Karen Scibinico Linda Welsch Fred Keyes (below) John Nolan Social Science John Havice Dave Cleary Vickey Yablonski Mary Anne Wolfe Betty Allen Math Ray Whipple Bob Pesce Carl Puglia George Yianakes Mi Bethe McBride Charles Markham Physical Education Roy Condon Nancy MacLaughin Frank Carey Les Levey Edwin a Komechuk Science Bob Lynch Tammy Mentus Arthur Cannon Harry Lucier Max Mueller 23 The Arts Harold Wiesse Jack Goldberg Gail Rosenthal Frank Hughes Doris Young Occupational Education . ! ijr L Peter Vennard Roger Young Bill Sticklor Bill Brennan The first shall be last. Tm flying to Boston from Washington D. C. Suddenly, the plane begins to shake and 1 hear pilot Mark Ford ' s voice over the loudspeaker saying, Don ' t worry folks, it ' s only a little turbulence. Seated next to me are interpreters Jill MacMillan and Rhula Mitcheltree. I hear Rhula calling stewardess Kathie Duval in Spanish. Kathie understood and came quickly. I asked her if the ladies sitting in the next row were fashion designer Jeanine Buchanan with models Kathy Parson and Donna Moriera. 1 then heard co-pilot Andy Burton announce that we would be landing soon. He noted that if we kept our eyes open, we may spot political successes Michelle Currier and Sharon Hansen hiding from the media at the airport. After getting my luggage, a called a limosine and the driver, John Gallenis told me he had just driven famed scientists Joanne Jean, Lisa Masi, Tom Stewart, Tim Macaulay, and Charles Frangos to the Shereton for a convention. John then pointed out that Jim Murray had started his own business on Main Street called Pub ' s Pub. I decided to stop there for a drink after I got rid of my luggage. When 1 walked into the Pub, 1 saw accountant James Barkhouse and assesor Dana Spinney arguing. I asked waitress Debbie Young what the problem was and she said Jimmy was trying to persuade Dana to assess the business for less. 1 then sat at the bar and over heard Ronnie Colbume, Jeff Stanley, Jimmy Canavan, and Ted Equi discussing married life and how hen pecked they were. Ronny said that his wife, Susan Atwell just wouldn ' t stop nagging, Ted agreed that his wife Jan Bauer was quite the same, and Jeff and Jimmy stated that their wives Lisa Troiano and Robin Hartman spent too much money. After 1 left the Pub, 1 decided to get a bite to eat at Kitty ' s which is now owned by Jeff White and Denise Haerer. Inside 1 met Ed Coleman, David Lopilato, and Wally Roberts, who along with chef Peter Thistle suggested I try the veal. While 1 was waiting for my meal, I noticed they had redecorated the walls. They were covered with paintings by such artists as Robert Rasche, Susan Hilton and Nancy Alexander. After I ate, I decided it was early enough to spend a few hours in the sun before 1 went for a checkup at Doctor Tricia Hayes ' office. When 1 arrived at the beach, I saw such familiar faces as Robert Brophy, Doug Chappee, Darlene Welch, Diane Leach, Joanne Campana, Mike Vadala, and Mark Ridgley. After saying hello, 1 sat next to Barbara Wallace and read a copy of the Boston Globe while 1 soaked up the rays. The headline said, Famous Dancer Breaks Leg During Performance. As I read on, I discovered that Daryl Arsenault had broken his leg because of a faulty set which was believed to be the work of Peter Bourgesois. Daryl ' s lawyer. Bob Laskey, says that he definately has a case. Opening up to the sports page, 1 noticed such names as Mike Quinlan, Brian Meaney, Peter Barrasso, Peter Murdock, Todd Hopkins, Dana Coffill, Phil King and Vin Bonnano. 1 also saw an advertis- ment for ladies ' razors endorsed by six time gold medalist in swimming, Mary McLean. When 1 finished reading the paper, I headed for the doctor ' s office. Inside, secretary, Jeanine Au- ckerman, said to go in and she assured me that I wouldn ' t be alone in the waiting room. When I went to sit down, 1 saw housewives, Jean Aloisi, June Thomas, Loretta Benninati and Susan Laste. We were later joined by Sister Patty Cantone. When I went in the office. Doctor Hayes said she had just finished putting a cast on Judy Holladay ' s arm. After 1 left the doctor ' s office, I decided to go by the Old High School. On passing the football field, I notice that John Cameron, Wayne Kasa, Jim McMenimen, Gary Rodgers and Mike Parente were coaching some Pop Warner teams at practice. And, oddly enough. Shelly Fiore, Sue Kelly, Denise Bowen and Mary Cohen were helping the cheerleaders. When I went in the school, I noticed two new secretaries, Lynn Witham and Rachel Brown. There were also three new teachers added to the list; Dana Arsenault — P.E., Linda Gormely — Speech, and Mary Bevis, who teaches Karate once a week. When 1 walked by the music room, I heard a record that sounded like Uncle Harry ' s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Inside I could hear the sounds of musical greats, Jim Ippolito, Wayne Mitchell, John Miller, John Kodis, Bob Lorton, Steve Lytle, Donna Wood, Sandy Kennedy, Lynn Sutton, Steve Rabasco, Steve Whitehom, Nancy Olsen, and Paul Bel- legarde. Once I got down to the gym I saw Joyce Taylor, Lorraine Anderson, Moe Casey, Cheryl Staff, Lori Austin, Eileen Sarsfield, and Brenda Standley taking advantage of Ladies open gym. After I left the school, I stopped by the bank to get a check cashed. The teller, Donna Martino said it must be a day for familar faces as Cheryl Anderson, Nikki Cacciatore, Glen Hansen, David Wallace and Cindy Rajaniemi had all been in earlier. On my way out the door, I saw a poster that said: N. R. Choral Society Concert — 7:30 p.m., and I decided I would go. When I got there, I bought a ticket from Josiphine DiFranco and she told me that Karen Comerford, Doreen Jones, Lisa Peffers, Jackie Hanseon, and Barbara Rush were all in the concert. In the audience, I saw Chris Anderson, Andy MacLeod, Reba Pottle, Patty Rich and Paul Frontiero. The singing was great. I left there and headed for Zayres to pick up some things before my return to Washington in the morning. Inside I met Sue Gonsalves and Pat Sullivan I talked with them for a while and then I saw Denise Jones who asked me if I wanted to take a ride around town in her green truck. I accepted and we left. I turned on the radio just in time to catch the end of the Celtics game. I noticed that they had acquired some new players and among them were Gary Baxter, Charlie Wheeler, Scott Solimine, Cary Boucher, Rob Svhela, and David Paul. As we turned down Main Street, I noticed a new garage had been built next to Shell and inside I noticed such faces as Mike Masellas, David Osbume, Artie Reinold, Mark and Roger Berg, and Steve Gallant. While passing Mr. Donut, I saw Ann Ferretti go by in her ninety-eight, along with Pam Kulsa and Marie Fitzmaurice. As we continued, I noticed that Polka Dot Junction had been moved and was under new ownership. I went inside and was informed by salesclerk, Lorraine Snow that Deanna Storey and Patty Reagan had just recently bought the business from the previous owners. I was also informed that Brooks Discount Store is now operated by Robyn Richardson and Linda Bar- bagallo. After I finished talking, I asked Denise to leave me at the Cinema and pick me up an hour later. Inside I saw, Scott MacAlpine, Lori Potter, David Brockbank and Sue Tataro. My return trip to Washington was rather uneventful. Seeing that there was no familiar faces, I had a chance to catch up on some much needed rest. Spirit Week brought high hopes of a Hornet victory on Turkey Day, with each class making posters, wearing costumes, and decorating the school. The rally on Wednesday morning brought both laughs and tears, while the annual festivities took place. The football team made their debut as majorettes in short skirts, dancing to the tune of Tea for Two and later the Queen, her court, and the King were crowned while the crowd cheered them on. Later, the cheering competitions between the classes were held, and the Sophomore ' s came as a surprise to us all when they won the yelling contest. The Seniors, however, were unbeaten once again, as they walked away with the Spirit Week prize for the third year in a row. Five thousand spectators were on hand to watch the North Reading Hornets and the Lynnfield Pioneers battle for the turkey on Thanksgiving morning. Somehow the spirited Hornets never quite made it off the ground, as they only had 66 yards rushing, and 4 first downs on the day. Lynnfield took advantage of N.R. ' s mistakes and went on to score the only touchdown of the game in the secondquarter, on a third and eight, from the Hornet 11 yard line. The Hornets still had plenty of time and everyone knew it, but by the middle of the fourth quarter, the fans were beginning to lose hope. The Hornets never gave up and it showed by the looks of frustration and agony on their faces. Late in the final quarter quarterback Jimmy Canavan was carried off the field with a badly sprained ankle and with two minutes left in the game, N.R. knew that Lynnfield would take home the Turkles once again. Champions for the first time in North Reading history. The excitement stayed with the team throughout the season, as the decision wasn ' t final until the Hornets won the last game of the season against Lynnfield, 2-0. N.R. went on from there to beat Westport 2-0 in the first game of the State Tourney, but unfortunately it ended there as N.R. lost the second game in a hard fought battle against Lynn Classical, 3-1. Only one varsity player, Paul Estes, was named to the All Star team, which proves Coach Roy Condon ' s Statement that it was, the total team effort that kept the Hornets going, until their dream had become a reality. ■ ' ,r ' ■ ' f x;yi . ?y i ' r.
