Club 0 Through its programs, AFS hopes to develop understanding and respect be- tween individuals, and mutual awareness of different cultures and ways of life, all in the framework of a significant educational experience. AFS students attend high school as a senior and live as members of their U.S. families on the same basis as the other young people in the home. While they «.Jlearn first-hand of many different aspects of our life, they also broaden our hori- zons by telling of their countries. The Americans Abroad Programs were started by AFS returnees who wanted to 5 - offer young Americans the kinds of experiences which they had had. The Ameri- cfo 5” Abroad student is a junior or senior who applies through the local AFS chap- both of the programs offered. The Summer Program enables a ju- . V A nior to spend 6-10 weeks during the summer, living with a family abroad. The -h ' (t chool Program sends juniors or seniors to a country in the Northern or Southern i h iTiisphere, where they live and study for a full year in a secondary school. V 100 Before I arrived in the U. S. I was afraid. I didn ' t know what I should expect. But now that I have stopped to think, I realize how wonderful that experi- ence was. I was sent to the Paddleford family, who received me as a new daughter, giving all their help and love. 1 had smiles and the Hi of all the kids. 1 made friend- ships that made me feel so important. I saw the color- fulness of seasons and people and ... 1 found, that in spite of different people, language and customs, I found hearts ready to give me love and wish me peace. I already miss this period in my life. Mariangela Garcia de Almedia 101 I am the first North Reading student to be accepted as an Americans Abroad candidate. For the summer of ' 69 I stayed in a village of the rain forest jungles in southern India, and lived as the daughter of a Hindu family, the Bhalchandra Madimans. In their village there were no paved roads and horse carts were the major means of transportation. Because Hindus worship cows, we ate and lived on a diet of vegetable curries, rice, and water buffalo milk. Which according to custom, we ate with our hands. The mark on my forehead, called kum-kum, is worn as make-up by Indian girls. I am dressed in a sari, the common Indian dress. My head is bowed in homage to the God in every- one with the traditional Hindu greeting, Namastay . Valerie Vullo 102 Varsity Football 1st row: R. Chin, P. LaCarscia, C. Stedman, J.
