We will all remember Mr. Malatesta for the careful guidance he has given us and the personal interest and friend- ship he offered to each of us. We will remember a quoted phil- osophy of Mr. Malatesta ' s Life ' s but a walking shadow . . . It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. He has repeatedly contradicted this quotation and given more meaning to the word life for all of us . We will always remember his pointer and the senior plays he work- ed so hard to produce . In sincere and deep appreciation, we, the class of nineteen hundred and sixty-five, dedicate our yearbook, the Golden Years, to Mr. Albert L. Malatesta. 4 A AND S T A F MESSAGES TO THE CLASS OF ’65 Dr. Quinn Congratulations to the Class of 1965 on the occasion of graduation from High School. Our experience has been that graduates return from time to time for a variety of purposes, ranging from the desire to see friends and teachers to the need for additional educational or occupational guidance. As the number of graduates of this relatively new high school has increased, we have institu- ted a follow-up service which is de- signed to serve you and at the same time to provide us with statistical in- formation relative to the nature and quality of our educational program . Such a service will surely be advan- tageous to you and to all other grad- uates who follow. You are, therefore, always welcome to pay return visits; indeed, you are encouraged to do so if the school -- or any one of us -- may be of further service . My very best wishes to you all. George R . Quinn Superintendent Mr. Kenney My sincere best wishes to you, the class of 1965. May this book hold many golden memories for all of you. We have stressed the importance of the inquiring mind and have tried to help you gain the background and knowl- edge necessary to make wise decisions. Remember that learning is most noble when it advances the cause of peace, freedom, and the equality of man. Where will you stand on the great issues which lie ahead? The decision is yours but it will require courage and dedication. The years ahead will be Golden Years if yours is a sincere effort . Arthur J. A small bundle of never-ceasing energy, topped with a constant smile is Sole- dad Castro Esquivel, North Reading High School’s first foreign -exchange stu- dent. Sole, as she is best known came to our town from the Latin American country of Costa Rica. Her charming personality combined with her eager de- sire to learn new customs and ideas have made her popular with both students and teachers . Many things about the United States have proven to be different from those in her country. One of the most predominant differences is the snow. Until this year, Sole, had never experienced even snow flurries so the first snowfall was quite a treat for her. Sole has been the guest of many youth organizations here in the North Read- ing including Girl Scouts, the various church groups and has spoken at adult meetings. She is a member of the World Affairs Club which is raising money for a student from our town to study in another country. Even after Soledad returns to Costa Rica she will not be forgotten by the many people who made her acquaintance. Walk together, talk together, O ye people of the Earth, then and only then shall ye have peace. A.F.S. motto. 74 u N D E R C L When things go wrong as they sometimes will, When the road you are trudg- ing seems all uphill, When tire funds are low and the debts are high, And you want to smile, but you have to sigh, When care is pressing you down a bit, Rest if you must but don ' t quit. Life is queer with its twists and turns As everyone of us sometimes learns, And many a failure turns about, When he might have won had he stuck it out; Don ' t give up though the pace seems slow -- You may succeed with another blow Success is failure turned in- side out -- The silver tint of the clouds of doubt, And you never can tell how close you are, It may be near when it seems so far; So stick to the fight when you ' re hardest hit -- It is when things seem worst that you must not quit. This year was the first time that a squad from North Reading attended the National Cheerleaders Associa- tion Clinic held at Springfield College, during the summer of ' 64. The girls learned new cheers and techniques which they used for football and basketball season. The squad sponsored a rally before each football game, a dance to raise money to subsidize spectator buses and it ' s 2nd Invitational Cheerleaders ' Competition. Freshman Cheerleaders J. Elliot, N. The band oper- ates all year, marching, in concert, and in some instances, when Mr. Weisse is not around, as a rock n ' roll band. What the band lacks in numbers, it makes up for in power blending ability learning skill and leadership. They are active in paradise and in all holiday functions where a band is called for. At football games during half time, when the green and gold mass is seen stepping lively from the goal posts to the strains of cheer, cheer!, ” the spectators know that they are in for a precision marked performance by the band. Never lacking in spirit or desire, with freshness and vigor exhibited by all, instilled by the per- sonal example of Mr. Weisse, the band never loses a half time, to the opposing band . 309 Drum Majorettes FRONT ROW: P. Correlle, M. Kinnie, D. Milley, L. Johnson, J. Quinlan. The field hockey team ' s season was marred by the absence of team captain Debbie Elliott for most of the games. The team members practiced after school under the direction of Miss McLaughlin. Their games included con- tests with Hamilton -Wenham, Wilmington, Masconomet and other surrounding schools. Interest in field hockey has grown each year, promising good teams for the future. Captain, Debbie Elliott. Ill Cross Country 1st ROW: Mr. Mannheim, J. Lisi, G. McFarland, T. Murphy, S. Divine, C. Gleason. 2nd ROW: F. Wilson, F, Hitchins, D. Smith, P. Smith, J. Cullen. 3rd ROW: A. Sylvia, T. Emerson, D. Strachan, B. Taylor, T. Caldwell, B. Woolacott. In the second year in the Dual County League our Cross-Country team has seen more action and more wins than in previous years. Cross-Country is a gruelling sport which requires a great deal of stamina. It consists of a 2.5 mile course through paths in woods and along the sides of roads. Under Coach Mannheim and Co-Captians, Tom Murphy and Steve Devine, the team has improved on its records of last year, and the team itself has seen a general improvement. A better turn- out of participants is expected next year, and an even better league standing. 112 D V E AND R T R PA TRONS AND PA TRONESSES A Mr. Mrs. John S.
