Q BASKETBALL With only one returnee from last year,s outstanding team, the road looked rough for North's hoopsters. But, led by the phenomenal scoring of Captain Doug Crutchfield, the Raiders proved themselves a match for the toughest, as they com- piled an excellent 14-6 record, and again qualified for the Tech Tourney. After an opening-night loss to strong Natick, 58-51, Coach Mullarkeyis boys roared back to trample Thayer, 70--43, with Crutchfield netting 31 points. They continued to roll by defeating Hingham, 44-31, and Mission, 69-56. In these games Sonny Scanlon demonstrated his superb ball-handling and steady defensive work. Crutchfield's 33 points led North to a come-from-behind 70-56 victory over previously undefeated Everett, and the surging Raiders grabbed their fifth straight from Archbishop Wdliams, 48-38. The Red and Black became the victims of an upset as Weymouth's all-court press prevailed, 50-44, but the boys rebounded to smother Christopher Columbus, 73-24, and nip powerful Newton, 52-48. The Raiders were ready for Weymouth the second time around and took revenge by romping, 76-45, with Dick Mann's 30 points setting the pace. The boys again clubbed Thayer, 56-26, but lost an early lead and were defeated by a strong Brockton quintet, 66-56. In these games Lefty F redrickson showed his defensive prowess by consistently blocking opponents' shots and grabbing numerous rebounds. In one of the season's most exciting finishes, Mann's basket with five seconds left gave North a 39-37 victory over Braintree. North won the rubber game with Wey- mouth, 65-43, as Crutchfield pushed in 36 big points C3 short of the North recordl. and Arlington proved little trouble as the Raiders coasted, 60-44. Eddie Deane and J im Baldwin were brilliant both offensively and defensively in this game. In a return match with Brockton the Raiders fared better, but were again defeated, 64-57 However, they came back strong to defeat Braintree twice more, 68-59 and 44-41, the latter being a thriller won by Mann's clutch foul shooting. This qualified them for the Tech Tourney, but the pressure finally took its toll as the team slumped to defeat against arch-rival Quincy, 58-52, and Portsmouth, N. H., 62-43. In Tech Tourney preliminaries, North overpowered Malden Catholic, 58-38, but was eliminated after a hard struggle with a championship Lawrence Central team, 61-44. Doug Crutchfield finished his high school career with well over 1000 points, a record-breaker in North history. CAROLYN A. DANIELSON 44 Wedgewood Street Danie-The Blue Angel . .
