North Quincy's football squad, boasting several experienced returnees and eight seniors in the starting eleven, received a severe jolt even before the gridiron season started when Star quarterback Eddie Deane suffered a severe leg injury in a pre-season scrimmage. Despite this loss, the Raiders fought a determined Stough- ton team to a 6-6 tie in their official debut, with Kevin Mahoney turning in a fine 'cs ff two-way performance as Deane's replace- ment. The following Saturday Coach Donahue's boys used the dramatic pass- lateral play to advantage as they out- classed.Rindge Tech, 25-0. The Raiders continued their winning ways by edging Taunton, 12-6, in a game that featured the spectacular running of Larry McCee and the excellent all-around sxw. . Av' WV! uf' ,Jw 1, K,-f . '..' A second-half spurt enabled arch-rival Braintree to come from behind and grab a 20-14 decision. Doug Crutchfield, Jim Baldwin, Don Polvere, and Ralph Frazier were standouts in a losing cause. The following week an epidemic of fumbelitis ripped through both squads as North and Hingham battled to a 6-6 draw with the play of Babe Sweeney highlighting the action. Not forgetting the stunning upset pulled by the Whiz Kids the previous season, the boys from North rolled over Milton to the tune of 27-7. Outstanding was the explosive running of Ceorge Doring. The next week the Red and Black surprised everyone by containing power- house Natick for three periods before bowing, 26-7. 1n thisigame the Raider line turned in its finest defensive effort, but lack of reserve strength wore the team down. Nevertheless, the boys bounced back to whip Dedham, 25-0, with Doug Crutchfield playing one of his finest games. Then, with school spirit at its peak, the Raiders prepared to meet their inter-city rivals-the boys from Quincy. Seldom in the history of the Turkey Day series have the two clubs been more evenly matched, but in the end, it was the Presidents' more numerous le- gions that provided the edge as North bowed, 19-13. Doug Crutch- field was presented the Cranville Memorial Trophy as the game's outstanding player. All in all, it was a successful season, and the boys certainly provided their rooters with plenty of excitement. BARBARA A.
