We, the ed- itors of the 1957 Jfanet, feel, as do many others, that Nortlfs Class of ,57 has been distinctive in its spirit, in its attitude, in its accomplishments, we have tried to depict this intangible reality as best we could. We have, therefore, integrated the individual seniors into the design of our activity pages in order to emphasize The Senior at North. AES' J3- cenzant, f f fi' I North Quincy's football squad, boasting several experienced returnees and eight seniors in the starting eleven, received a severe jolt even before the gridiron season started when Star quarterback Eddie Deane suffered a severe leg injury in a pre-season scrimmage. Despite this loss, the Raiders fought a determined Stough- ton team to a 6-6 tie in their official debut, with Kevin Mahoney turning in a fine 'cs ff two-way performance as Deane's replace- ment. The following Saturday Coach Donahue's boys used the dramatic pass- lateral play to advantage as they out- classed.Rindge Tech, 25-0. The Raiders continued their winning ways by edging Taunton, 12-6, in a game that featured the spectacular running of Larry McCee and the excellent all-around sxw. . Av' WV! uf' ,Jw 1, K,-f . '..' A second-half spurt enabled arch-rival Braintree to come from behind and grab a 20-14 decision. Doug Crutchfield, Jim Baldwin, Don Polvere, and Ralph Frazier were standouts in a losing cause. The following week an epidemic of fumbelitis ripped through both squads as North and Hingham battled to a 6-6 draw with the play of Babe Sweeney highlighting the action. Not forgetting the stunning upset pulled by the Whiz Kids the previous season, the boys from North rolled over Milton to the tune of 27-7. Outstanding was the explosive running of Ceorge Doring. The next week the Red and Black surprised everyone by containing power- house Natick for three periods before bowing, 26-7. 1n thisigame the Raider line turned in its finest defensive effort, but lack of reserve strength wore the team down. Nevertheless, the boys bounced back to whip Dedham, 25-0, with Doug Crutchfield playing one of his finest games. Then, with school spirit at its peak, the Raiders prepared to meet their inter-city rivals-the boys from Quincy. Seldom in the history of the Turkey Day series have the two clubs been more evenly matched, but in the end, it was the Presidents' more numerous le- gions that provided the edge as North bowed, 19-13. Doug Crutch- field was presented the Cranville Memorial Trophy as the game's outstanding player. All in all, it was a successful season, and the boys certainly provided their rooters with plenty of excitement. BARBARA A. Q BASKETBALL With only one returnee from last year,s outstanding team, the road looked rough for North's hoopsters. But, led by the phenomenal scoring of Captain Doug Crutchfield, the Raiders proved themselves a match for the toughest, as they com- piled an excellent 14-6 record, and again qualified for the Tech Tourney. After an opening-night loss to strong Natick, 58-51, Coach Mullarkeyis boys roared back to trample Thayer, 70--43, with Crutchfield netting 31 points. They continued to roll by defeating Hingham, 44-31, and Mission, 69-56. In these games Sonny Scanlon demonstrated his superb ball-handling and steady defensive work. Crutchfield's 33 points led North to a come-from-behind 70-56 victory over previously undefeated Everett, and the surging Raiders grabbed their fifth straight from Archbishop Wdliams, 48-38. The Red and Black became the victims of an upset as Weymouth's all-court press prevailed, 50-44, but the boys rebounded to smother Christopher Columbus, 73-24, and nip powerful Newton, 52-48. The Raiders were ready for Weymouth the second time around and took revenge by romping, 76-45, with Dick Mann's 30 points setting the pace. The boys again clubbed Thayer, 56-26, but lost an early lead and were defeated by a strong Brockton quintet, 66-56. In these games Lefty F redrickson showed his defensive prowess by consistently blocking opponents' shots and grabbing numerous rebounds. In one of the season's most exciting finishes, Mann's basket with five seconds left gave North a 39-37 victory over Braintree. North won the rubber game with Wey- mouth, 65-43, as Crutchfield pushed in 36 big points C3 short of the North recordl. and Arlington proved little trouble as the Raiders coasted, 60-44. Eddie Deane and J im Baldwin were brilliant both offensively and defensively in this game. In a return match with Brockton the Raiders fared better, but were again defeated, 64-57 However, they came back strong to defeat Braintree twice more, 68-59 and 44-41, the latter being a thriller won by Mann's clutch foul shooting. This qualified them for the Tech Tourney, but the pressure finally took its toll as the team slumped to defeat against arch-rival Quincy, 58-52, and Portsmouth, N. H., 62-43. In Tech Tourney preliminaries, North overpowered Malden Catholic, 58-38, but was eliminated after a hard struggle with a championship Lawrence Central team, 61-44. Doug Crutchfield finished his high school career with well over 1000 points, a record-breaker in North history. CAROLYN A. DANIELSON 44 Wedgewood Street Danie-The Blue Angel . . Jack Cooke, Red O'Neill, and Bob Quintiliani were elected Co-Captains to lead North against their rivals. The Red Raiders re- ceived steady goal-tending from Tom Lloyd, a starter from last year's squad. .lack Cooke and HButch Travers turned in sparkling performances at defense, Red O'Neill, Bob Quintiliani, and Bob Direng composed the swift first line which kept the opposition constantly on guard, Charlie Neagle, Dave DeChamp, and Will Pitts provided a second line with plenty of hustle. BASEBALL Although this year's team was not one of Northis win- ningest, it certainly was no failure with regard to spirit and enthusiasm. With only four returnees from last year's varsity, there was plenty to learn, and every afternoon at the field one might have seen the squad doing just that, and practicing until early evening, under the direction of Mr. Forrest and Mr. Phillips, to try to better themselves. Not quite ready for the major leagues, these boys nevertheless deserved a medal for their outstanding efforts. 9. . of--. ,nw N ,IM wwf! 4,-ir. k -,- .ca .,,,, suv. 'Y m,'v.,,. f.. ff f y -h,,,-. Because its season is overshad- owed by football, Cross Country usually does not attract too much attention, how- ever, this year we had a successful season., defeating Quincy, Milton, Rockland, and Walpole, while dropping meets to the powerful squads of Brockton, Weymouth, Braintree, and Needham. This fine show- ing boosted the hopes for Winter and Spring Track. Winter Track started with a record number of candidates, and the team did well in the Metropolitan Track League. The Winter Track squad attracted many If j , is S Instructions from Coach Gentry football boys, who strength- ened the team greatly. In March, the tracksters moved from indoor to out- door practice. Under the di- rection of Coach Meaney the team was put into shape for the coming meets. They got used to running out- doors and practicing events not included in Winter Track. This year the Spring Track squad had prospects of being one of the best in North's history, because of the showing of Cross Coun- try and Winter Track run- ners. He would also have been very much astonished had he asked one of these athletes why the group was so ener- getic and businesslike: these boys willingly give up their time to help Mr. Rickson lead his junior-high gym classes, and to perform publicly at several occasions. As their name implies, the Student Leaders are being trained by Mr. Rickson to become real and successful leaders in all walks of life. Set up to aid the hard-pressed Student Council, this still-embryonic body has set before itself the enormous task of improving condi- tions throughout the school, notably the cafeteria dilemma and teacher-student relations. Bob Cuce has tl1e confusing po- sition of being President of the Presidents, but his and Mr. Roberts' main problem is to c6-ordinate the group with the stu- dent body, and to make the All-Group Council a permanent force at North. 4-r l 'Z xi! a g Az -V .-llllnnllup., 1 I f JW - Q nu: I I'- x7 BERT LX NCH 35 Deerfield Street Turk Aloha Alaska . . . lN'Iarie 22nd swabby? . . . And to make this prom a success, our Prom Committee worked untiringly on an innumerable assortment of details. First they fought to put the prom under fashionable country-club lights, then they worked hard on invitations, orchestra, pro-- gram, favors, and the many other necessities which all went toward making the Prom the best ever. Thanks to those who gave us help: to Mr. Collins, to our par- ents, to the School Committee, and thanks most of all to that hard-working and untiring group, the Prom Committee. In the morning the seniors were as they once had been-kids in their playclothes with toys in hand, in the evening they were hardly recognizable: that well-dressed, mannerly group gathered together to eat, to dance, to listen to their futures as forecasted by classmates, and to gather up G'Moments to Remember. Shouting their motto: a'The Girls' Club will live for- ever! , they toiled, struggled, and finally succeeded in saving this worthy ship from failure. They sailed on to reach new goals, from unbelievably successful service proj- ects, to wonderful shows, to an outstand- ing February dance. With Miss Pratt as dependable skipper, Mary, Judi, Dotty and Linda at the helm, and a determined crew hard at work at all times, sails were billowing with enthusiasm and spirit from September to June. A co-operative faculty provided a beacon light, guiding the voy- age which led to success at every port. This is the question commonly asked by poverty-stricken seniors as they are re- luctantly dragged into Room 405 to make tl1e Hnal payment on their illanets. But little do they realize the long hours of hard work spent on the composing and production of this publication. Hour after tiresome hour was spent by Co-Editors Lester Morss and Arthur Bearon, who completed layouts and write-ups for a large portion of tl1e book and directed the Editorial Staff. Associate Editors Bill Denneen and Mary Greene worked untiringly on curricular and cen- sus pagesg and Mary, in charge of the Typing Staff, was on constant call of all concerned with the yearbook. Let us not forget our hard-working Business Managers, Bob Nlanning and Bob Cuce, alias The Bobbsey Twins, whose capable direction of the Advertis- ing and Patron Staffs assured us of sound finances, and whose clever juggling of funds helped to keep the cost ofthe book at a minimum. Rudyard Kipling has given us a figurative meaning: If you can dream-and not make dreams your master, If you can think-and not make thoughts your aim ,... If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds' worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it, And-which is moreEyou'll be a Nlan, my son! -Kipling, If In dealing with tangibles, we must consider success as the achievement of a goal. Still, as far as yearbooks are concerned, success means more than mere accomplish- ment of a purpose. A yearbook is a reminder, a historical record, an outstanding yearbook, however, is, in addition, a work of art-a book which in a limited space portrays the spirit of a closely-knit group of students. The question is whether we as editors have ccdreamedv too much, or whether we have succeeded in producing a yearbook out of the ordinary. We hope the 1957 Mane! lives up to at least some of our ardent expectations. Yet how could this book ever have become reality without the guidance and as- sistance of so many: Mr. Hofferty, who worked untiringly to make it a success, Mr. Bleiler, who helped to give our book its design, as well as its beautiful photographs, Mr. Farnham, who ran to and fro as our link with Keller'sg Miss Morrison and Mrs. Hannon, who graciously answered our every request, Bob and Bob, who solicited our pecuniary resources, Mary and Bill, whose great help we can never forget, and Hnally, our hardworking staffs-Editorial, Advertising, Patron, Typing-these were the unsung heroes. Our heartfelt thanks to all! Arthur Bearon and Lester Morss Co-Editors-in-Chief 86 -It .-1 ..- Without You, Tloif Book ould Never Be Mrs. Charles Abbot Miss Judy Abraham Mr. Carroll T.
